I have a generic "multicolor" section for miscellaneous cards that aren't part of guilds but don't fit into the other sections. I'll probably throw these in there for now.

Even in combo-centric cubes, it only combos with one card...

These lands are great. It will throw off people's OCDs, but they're good enough to be cubed with.

Going infinite with Basalt Monolith is cool, but I don't like how this doesn't do much by itself.

This is my gut reaction too.

Card looks okay to me. Requires some setup, it can whiff even with ideal configurations, and my human shells (decks playing Champion/Lieutenant, etc) need decks constructed almost entirely out of humans to work well. So this card wouldn't shine in decks that otherwise care about humans. Interestingly enough, I would be MORE interested in this card if I wasn't supporting a humans-matters theme, lol.

That being said, the ceiling is really high. I'd like to see how often the ideal configuration comes together. My guess is that this will wind up being a slight miss, but it requires some testing.

Could you elaborate on what makes this better than Chasm Skulker? Skulker gets counters for free and gives you wrath-protection.

Agreed. I also think Skulker is better for these exact two reasons. Kraken was disappointing for us because the activation cost was prohibitive and because all my eggs were in the same basket on the table at the same time. It's a fine card, but it didn't survive the testing process with us.

As a comparison, Krenko, Tin Street Kingpin grows also grows the main body, grows the board wider, faster, has a splashable mana cost, in a less competitive color (where it's a better fit) ...and it does it for free.

I include Baral because of his application in storm, but people do play the card in other decks because it's a fine card. I don't think I'd play it in the cube if I wasn't playing storm, but as long as he's in there, people will enjoy him for other builds as well.

For the sake of argument, shouldn't Manic Vandal be replaced with Irreverent Revelers from THB assuming Vandal is the optimal choice for your cube?

Not necessarily. I think being both a Human and a Warrior might make Manic Vandal better than Irreverent Revelers in a lot of cases still. But with no tribal interactions, sure. Revelers probably gets the nod.

I LOVE Squee ...and I think this card is likely better. The ceiling on this card is nutz. And being able to discard cards you want in your graveyard and being able to draw additional non-Squee cards are huge advantages. Squee is a more reliable method of mitigating discard-based drawbacks, if that's your sole objective with the card. If you're trying to set up busted and more meaningful interactions, this card is much better. It has its flaws compared to squee, but being a legitimate card to have on the board and having an absurd ceiling make up for it, IMO.

I don't think this card is a staple, and I don't think it should be cracking tiny Izzet sections. But I do think that large cubes might have to room to test it, and I think there are some insane interactions to be explored.

I think this is likely slightly better than Go For the Throat. If it turns out the be the case, I'll likely make that swap.

I have 41 cards that are either artifact creatures or make artifact creatures.

I have ~55 creatures that can have counters on them. But among those, HA would kill or neutralize a lot of them, and meaningfully interacts with the rest. Funnily enough, you can also use it to remove -1/-1 counters from your own creatures to make them stronger or reset Persist or whatever, which is kinda funny.

Might be worth testing Act over GFtT and seeing how it fares on average. My guess is that Heartless Act will be marginally better.

This card is so insane. If you can build-around it early, it'll be busted as a companion. You have to give up a lot, but the ability to cast this card from your sideboard is bonkers, and will more than likely make up for what you're losing if you draft with it in mind.

If the companion cost turns out to be too taxing for your specific build ...Lurrus is still a great Magic card. A hybrid 3-power 3-drop with lifelink that replays permanents from your graveyard every turn? That's fantastic on its own.

So there are multiple ways to use this card. Draft early and engineer a build that can maximize the companion potential, or just put it into your deck as a good card. Either way, it's a winner.

Card's fantastic. Still insanely good, but at least the design restrictions actually mean something in this format. What you give up is significant, but nowhere near as significant as the upside, IMO. This card will be awesome.

Edit: Also, thread has no title, if you want to edit that real quick.

This reminds me of Desertion. Obviously this is better if the vanilla 5/4 is better than whatever you're countering, but Desertion also has the ability to counter any spell you want, and can randomly steal some complete bombs for you to use. I'm not really advocating for either though, as I think they're both kinda a miss.

    1. Shenanigans (powered) = Manic Vandal (unpowered) > Shredded Sails (decent, but I don't think the cycling makes up for the huge limitation on targets compared to Abrade). (Note: I don't run any of these three, but I actually like all of them)

    2. Ritual of Soot >> Mass Extinction (I think that card is bad). (Note: I don't like either card)

    3. Magmatic Sinkhole > Mythos of Vadrok (I like the cheap ceiling on Sinkhole compared do the dividable damage on the one that's always going to cost me 4 mana). (Note: I don't like either card)
