Hi, can you tell me some more about your SWCCG cube? I love cubing with MtG and would love to cube with SWCCG as well.
How do you draft it? Where/when do the freebie cards come in?

Light and Dark are obviously drafted separately. You can have 1 player do Sealed for each side, or you can do any 2-person draft event you want to divide the pool.

Freebie cards are freely available to both players to add into their decks when deckbuilding, just like basic lands in Magic.

Need a eulogy (aka thoughts behind the removal) of Diabolic Edict please Frown

I am also curious about Edict's removal, as well as the removal of Ashborn Phoenix, since you seemed pretty high on it during preview season and it's performed pretty well for us. Is it just plain worse than even the worst of the Goblin Rabblemaster variants as far as red threes go?

Edict is a card I like a lot, but it is more redundant now that we have Liliana's Triumph, which is ever so slightly better. But I'm not opposed to bringing it back at some point in the future.

I needed a cut in red, and red's 3cc creature section was the most saturated. And the best cut from that section was the Phoenix, IMO. Card's great, but I don't need it for anything other than just being a good 3-drop ...and red has plenty of those. And yes, I like all the Rabblemaster variants more.

Venser, Shaper Savant or Glen Elendra Archmage?

Both. I'd cut something like Ma-o'-War, Nadir Kraken, Opt, Serum Visions or even Whirler Rogue to play both of those cards.

Evolution seems like more fun, especially if you support some creature-based combo decks.

    I agree with steve_man's rankings.

Monitor is the only one I don't play. Flash adds so much to those kinds of cards. My Twin/Kiki support package is all creatures that are either red or have flash.

Wtwlf, would you rate it above Sunbaked Canyon, below it or just differently?

Below it. That whole cycle is insanely good.

I like this land a lot, even in aggro. Having a wrath-proof way to increase your threat density and having an outlet to dump mana into if you draw more lands than you need are really nice qualities. It can hit really hard with any kind of pump effect too, like an anthem, battle cry trigger or god forbid an Elspeth jump trigger.

No, and it hasn't been for a while. I still run it though, because in the decks that can abuse it, Riders can still be a savage.

Card's okay, but 5 mana is a lot. This is a card I neither love nor hate. I don't cubbe it anymore, but it's a fine card if your group's attached to it.

But it only cost me half the mana to invest in, had an opportunity to impact the board immediately and was useable up to 3 turns faster. Which also means it might have activated before the opponent even drew an answer to it.

When I was at 540, I used a Glimpse Draft for 4 players. A 4 player Impulse Draft uses 720 cards, so it's not doable at 540 obviously.

Pack sizes are large, and there are often more important cards to burn that just slashing combo pieces out of packs. But the advantage of seeing 100% of the cube outweighs the drawback of having cards burned during the process. Combo decks are plenty competitive in Impulse/Glimpse/Sight drafts, I assure you. It would be no more common than one of the "ghost" players next to you drafting those combo pieces from the pack.

Thanks for the feedback on Orb.

Again, you asked why people like Keg variants better, so I explained the reasons why they're far better performers for most cube managers than Disk is. Even if the situations occur less often, the card is more effective at dealing with those situations when they arise. Which is critical, because they're the most problematic for the types of decks that would be playing these effects to begin with. Especially against aggro, where I'm probably dead around the same time Disk becomes available to activate.

But ultimately it doesn't matter. If you like Disk, go for it. I was just explaining why people have historically had more success with the scaling variants.

FWIW, I like Oblivion Stone more too. They typically both activate on the same turn, but Stone CAN be played and be activated in the same turn (given enough mana), it can be asymmetrical more often because of its own text, and it kills planeswalkers. But I don't run any of these kinds of effects anymore as it is. They were all too slow for us (except for Engineered Explosives, since it can both be set to 0 and can be activated immediately). But if I were to add one back in, the next artifact version of the effect would be Keg.

I don't much care for any of the masterpiece frames, so I pick maybe 1-2 cards to showcase those frames for the cube, and leave all the other ones in the cube OG.

You asked how it was better, and I explained it. I understand not ALL threats fall into the category of ones that get answered by Keg efficiently. But decks that run Keg? They're weak to aggro beaters and low-to-the-ground go-wide strategies. They're also weak to manlands. So Keg is a clean answer to the things your deck is weak against. Plus, it's a good answer to moxen and fast mana. Disk is terrible against all the cards that Keg is efficient at answering. Which also happens to be the kinds of cards those decks have weaknnesses against. Smaller numbers of bigger, slower threats are not an issue for most control decks. So I don't need Disk. I'm weak to tokens, manlands, explosive artifact mana and aggro beaters ...all the things that Disk is just unacceptably bad at answering.

Disk was a fun card in superfriends decks where it was legitimately asymmetrical, but ended up getting cut from the cube because it simply wasn't good in control anymore. It was too bad against all the things my deck needed help tackling.

Thanks for posting, and thanks for the kind words!

    1. Not sure I follow. If I do a 3-player glimpse draft, I see the same number of cards I would as if it was a table of 9. Each drafter is basically doing the work of multiple players (yourself, and then two "ghost" drafters to your side). I don't actually see any less cards than I would in a traditional draft with that same number of players. I also think being able to wheel cards is important to the draft process, and I wouldn't want to eliminate it.

    2. I have not played Mesmeric Orb, but I'm not sure that I would have any interest in it without supporting a mill theme. I'm sure it creates some tension when it's on the board though. With a mill deck available, the card could be a powerhouse I'm sure.

    Cheers, and happy cubing. Smile
