So longevity determines strategic value? Does that make Checkers more strategic too?

being that checkers has been "solved", the answer is no.

Magic, i think, because there is a lot of hidden information that well, in Chess you can always see everything your opponent has for resources.

But I don't think the difference is astronomical because Magic's design constraints and format limitations keep the unknown to a minimum (you can safely rule out your opponent holding a Chaos Orb for example) and lack of hidden resources let Chess players think far, far ahead in the game, probably a lot further ahead than most Limited Magic games, and a fair amount of Constructed as well.

the problem with the "chess masters see 20 moves ahead!!one!!" situation is that while they may be able to spot combinations and remember patterns that allow them to see the board as it will be in 5-10 moves, that's not entirely the case. even when i had coaches, the story wasn't "let's see if we can work on seeing far into the future of the game at hand," rather it was a case of "what do you want the board to look like in 5 moves?" "how do you get there?"

yes there are situations where a long string of forced (or obviously best) moves happen. however, a complicated middlegame or a complicated endgame will actually leave you physically tired after the game.

the fact that some of you have said that magic is more strategic than chess greatly amuses me. when magic has been around for at least 400 years and is still going as strongly as chess is, then you can talk to me about how strategic magic is.

and as for there not being bluffing in chess, well that's a bit wrong. the best example of a bluff i can give is offering a piece or pawn sacrifice. they're either a) giving up and hoping that you won't call their bluff or b) making it so that if you do call their bluff, you lose.

    Hard to say.

Obviously Chess has a lot more strategy when it comes to just a 1 vs 1 game. But overall Magic would have a little more because of it's various formats and such, I would think. *shrug*

chess does have plenty of different "formats"

there's bughouse, Zhouse, Suicide, Loser's, Atomic, Fischer Random

loser's chess is like suicide, except that you can castle, can give check (and can be checkmated...that results in a win for you if you are the checkmatee). the rest of the rules for suicide chess apply.

and then there's blitz chess (time limits between 3 minutes and 9 minutes), quick chess (time limits 10 minutes through 30 minutes), and lightning chess (time limits under 3 minutes)

i fail to see how this is complicated at all.

like it has been said before in this thread. reveal the card either as you're drawing it, or when you draw it but before you put it in your hand.

    Taken from Salvation Wiki:
Chiss-Goria is a (possibly mythical) Furnace Dragon from Mirrodin.

Chiss-Goria not likely going to return in planar chaos, but who knows.

    stranger things have happened.

i mean, who really thought ith was going to get a card in TS....or Teferi, for that matter.

Most of the legends who appear on the cards will not be involved in the plot of the Time Spiral trilogy. Some of the legends were brought from the past to the present (perhaps only for a brief moment), and some may just be visions of people from the past.

I am not intimately familiar with the Time Spiral cardset, but I believe the only legend with Time Spiral plot relevance is Teferi. Also, one of the Timeshifted legends also plays a role in the plot by the end of the Time Spiral novel.

actually it was a little more than halfway through.

poor teferi.....he should know better than to anger nicol billy

ah... so ...we can hope to see them in the novel? they did'nt appear in the TS novel...

i'm far too lazy to look up the quote or ask wizards answer, but whoever said it said explicitly that not all the legends on cards will be in the novel(s).

I have a question.. that I think only the folks in the storyline forum can answer =D

I was just messin' with my coldsnap cards and i read the flavour text for Panglacial Wurm.

    This guy:
Ib Halfheart, Goblin Tactician is in TS ....

But he is also in coldsnap panglacial wurm

    ...

coldsnap is centuries before current time no?

    so ... I am confused....

he's around in the same way jaya ballard, kaervek, mangara, mishra, etc. are.....they've been dumped into present time from their own time thanks to the time fractures

    Quote from runevirage
Azorius herald is W2, can be considered cheaper than paladin-en-vec
Azorius herald is unblockable (I know it's kind of late, but jitte anyone?)
Azorius herald hits the same as most other white weenie creatures
Azorius herald gains you 4 life when it comes into play

So why isn't he in white weenie or boros aggro?

    blue mana much?

herald doesn't do anything other than be an expensive sacred nectar without blue mana.

are you also saying that no means no, king cobweb?

    Laugh

seriously, if you despise someone and/or their way of life, there is no better way to let them know than by posting on an internet message board that they have no chance in hell of ever reading.

edit @the OP: one day you'll grow up and realize that being superficial and shallow really means no more than being an elietist in anything else. (yes, you sound like a total jackass by your statements.....) being against materialism is fine and dandy, but at some point you're going to realize....i'd like to be shallow and wallow in money and nice clothes, etc.....there's truth to that saying that ignorance is bliss. maybe you should try turning your brain off for a little while, coming down off your high horse and just enjoying life for once.

edit2: @the OP and releasethedogs: i have a small present for you two...straight from my photobucket account:

    Quote from Exalted Angel
I think this combo would be great for decks that uses urzatron ...

we need Mindslaver andAcademy Ruins forr combo
If you have enough mana and at least 1/1 creature you win game Smile
Sacrifice Mindslaver control next turn opponent use Academy Ruins ability
Draw > cast Mindslaver and sacrifice it too .....

to be fair, you don't need another creature. slaver is in and of itself a win condition.

if you have 12 mana available and an academy ruins, you have a hard lock in place. you'll wind up winning through decking or through one of their own win conditions
