In multiplayer you attack for three distinct reasons.

1: you just cast insurrection, c-hoof or something and you're Bout to ruin someone's day.

    2: killimg planeswalker

3: someone did something scary/annoying. (Flashbacked increasing ambition and passed, played a winter orb, ETC)

Im single player, every point counts. You need to deal 40 to win, and that hit with your wizard diminishes that to 39. In that sense, it is a "winning" attack.

As cool as Gloomdrifter is, by the time you have 7 cards in your GY, shouldnt you be in a position to drop Massacre Wurm and laugh at the opponent's face even louder? Just sayin', Gloomdrifer is still a solid second Wrath-For-Tokens-On-A-Stick, but...

    As for my own gem:
I honestly don't get why Commandeer doesn't see more use. I mean, sure, it's not a cheap counterspell. But the sheer horror on people's face when they invest life in their Boseiju and then use 20+ mana for a giant Genesis Wave or Exsanguiate, only for it to be Commandeered (It doesnt counter, sorry Boseiju) is absolutely hilarious to behold. Even funnier if you're tapped out and they figure you pose no threat to their gargantuan bomb.

And heck, if you're feeling hilarious, it's lovely to hijack a T1 Sol Ring. Just 'cause you can. 2 cards pitched be damned.

Of course, it requires a pretty hefty devotion to blue, and if you bank on hardcasting it from time to time, it's pricey, but well, I'd say in 2-color-decks it still works perfectly. UG might be its best home.

Commandeer is indeed quite insane. My favorite thing to do with it is to let it sit on top of my library with a sensei's and just tap out for something. Then you steal their Tooth and Nail.

As for my Gem, Give///Take has been performing flawlessly in the mimeoplasm. Sometimes it just draws 3, but when you factor in a giant Mimeplasm...

The bane is indeed brutal. It shuts down a lot of strategies while giving you a body, and is a very strong argument for torpor orb in control decks. I've been meaning to grab one for the mimeoplasm.

"Looking powerful" is now a reason for bans?
"Pestermite + Splinter Twin" looks powerrful... see how this "looks powerful" is a lame argument or i need to come with more examples?
Also, both was NEVER played together, so it's just a theory.

People saying that Serum Vision is bad is also out of mind. It's like saying that Ponder is bad because Brainstorm exist. Just because one card is better, it doesn't means the other is bad.

Storm player here. Visions sucks. Give me back my ponders. KTHX.

I channelled my inner LSV and went full durdle. Highlights of the night include:

Refraction helix on staunch-hearted warriors. Heroic triggers. Block your 3/3. Tap to bounce your nessian asp. Activate kiora's follower to untap the warriors. Bounce your Sealock monster (monstrous'd). Successfully dissolve your nessian asp when you recast it.

Activate Vortex elemental, targeting your 12/12 green promo. Activate it again targeting your prescient chimera. Attack. pay U.

    Divination into divination, thassa's bounty.

Griptide my opponent's nemesis of mortals, then use kiora's follower to untap his pain seer FTW.

I went 4-0 with an awesome UG decks that had tons of shenanigans going for it. I absolutely loved my experience and look forward to the draft format. Savage surge and triton tactics have most certainly moved up in my pick order.

My approach to standard is to borrow cards for PTQs and play the jankiest builds ever at FNM. Or twenty mountains and a bunch of dudes and burn spells. buying into the format every year sucks, and the only standard cards I do get are the modern/legacy/casual staples(IE, Deatrites, tribal lords, stuff like whelming wave, etc). At the end of the season, If I drafted the set once a week I spent the same amount of money as I'd do on a standard deck, I have a bunch of cards and I won a bunch of extra packs. I respect and admire the standard warriors who show up at FNM every week with tier 1 decks. They're the reason I have test partners for the few standard PTQs I go to. But you are right, wizard's business model of giving overwhelming support to standard is bollocks.

TLDR, your sentiment is shared. LIMITED OR BUST, BABY!

  • posted a message on How does one go about making a fun Maelstrom Wanderer deck?
I did that a while ago. I removed all instants and sorceries from the equation. This allowed me to run a Primal Surge deck with a commander that hastes everything. it was basically a huge pile of permanent-based mana accel and every good mana sink/huge dork in the colors. This means that on turn 4-5, I'm usually cascading into more mana(to re-cast the commander) or a huge board. I included a ton of mini-synergies to go with it too. I ran no counterspells, no wraths and very few removal options (mainly noncreature), making the deck incredibly fun to watch, but easy to beat, especially if you tucked the commander.

I took it apart to make other decks, and I don't think I'll be building another deck in those colors because the general is just too damn strong.

  • posted a message on Playing Limited: Advice?
Tips? Plenty. Do not tilt. You WILL lose to 8 year-olds with foil planeswalkers. You will get blown out by maindecked hate cards. You will make bad attacks and bad blocks. It happens. The better you deal with this, the better limited player you will be. Also, scorekeep. Take notes. If you see a combat trick or a removal spell, write it down. Use your sideboard a lot. Go through it after every match, you'll often find "bad cards" that become roleplayers, like. Boarding in that vanilla 1/3 against a deck full of 2/1s.

Common mistakes: letting a bomb define your draft/seale. So you first picked or opened a foil elspeth. Great! Unfortunately, your white sucks. Blue is very deep with lots of common and you have a lesser black rare with removal. So you decide to play esper with no fixing and end up at the 0-2 table. Streamlined decks win more games than any bomb rare(unless it's pack rat. Then you run 39 swamps and pack rat and 3-0).

Local FNM: bring sleeves. 45 is a good number. Sleeve up any valuable/sideboard card you pick up in addition to your deck.

PTQ/GP: buy them at the venue or buy a fresh pack and crack them while sleeving up. This is because marked sleeves are a big deal, and most sleeves get marked just by playing. This will save you much hassle with the judges.

I prefer pen and paper to keep track because it's easier to see how the gme went and to correct mistakes. Pens dont run out of batteries and tend to not break when they fall to the ground.

Theros is a tempo-based format. It rewards good deckbuilding and solid play. There are very few true bombs. The best archetypes are gray merchant black, Wx heroic, UB control, UG dinosaurs/krakens and minotaur aggro. Bestiw creatures are at a premium, and it is fine to maindeck stuff like naturalize sue to the enchantment-heavy nature of the set.

    Hope that helps.

    Flash

This card. It seems pretty bonkers for what it does. The problem with a format that has enormius fatties is that they get stuck in your hand. If they do something upon entering/leaving, all the better. Flash is basically mana and sac at the cost of CA(even then). It can be used as a one-**** effect to sneak a fatty.

I have been very impressed by this card thus far. Synergies I have found:

    Sylvan primordial
    Woodfall primus
    Mindslicer
    Prime speaker zegana
    Puppeteer clique
    Rune-scarred demon
    Yosei the morning star
    Kokusho the evening star
    Keiga the tide star

And thats just off the top. I'm sure there are a ton of things to do with it, but I never see anyone play it.

Elspeth isnt that great. I've beaten her. The only card i straight up lost to where turn 6 or stormbreath dragon.

Theros had very few cards without true answers like pack rat or sigarda.

Burning tree emissary? T1 elf, t2 emissary + fires seem strong.

Volcano hellion seems bad, you already have solid 4s and 5s. More 3 drops to go with your dorks seem good. You don't have removal or reach except for the flametongues. Some burn seems nice, or creatures that give tou reach like burnig-tree shaman.

I'd slam hoplite and keep a lookout for ordeals. Commiting to a color, let alone a color pair in the first picks is rarely correct.
