Both sides of this argument are so biased and blind that I don't even know where to begin.
First of all, good and bad are relative terms unless you're talking eternal formats where the card pool is relatively stable and in order for anything new to break into it, it has to be darn good.
I mean let's face it, is there any chance that a new counterspell, no matter how good it is, is going to ever see Legacy play? Highly doubtful.
So let's concentrate on Standard, which is really what all this is about.
First myth that needs to be done away with.
Counterspells =/= Control
Think about this, those of you *****ing about not wanting to play against 16counterspell.dec.
I have 16 counterspells.
You have a deck with 36 creatures and 24 land.
I'm going to run out of counters LONG before you run out of threats to throw against me.
Nobody EVER won with a control deck JUST because he stuffed it with a ton of counters. You have to know when to play them and when to hold back.
Go on, try to beat RG Aggro or GW Humans today with a deck loaded with counters. Or Zombies. Go on counter my Gravecrawler. I'll just bring him back once I get another zombie on the field. Oh, and once you counter my spell, I'll just Surgical Extraction your counter.
A good control deck needs more than just as fist full of counters to be competitive. So aggro players, please get over your counter hatred. It's totally illogical.
Now, to be fair, control players, you're NOT smarter than other players. It doesn't take being a rocket scientist to know that you don't counter a Birds of Paradise but DO counter the big fatty that they try to plunk down with all their ramp. And it certainly takes no brains to play Day of Judgment when you're staring down a board of critters.
Aggro and control are two different skills. One is no harder or easier than the other. So both sides, get over yourselves. You only make yourselves sound like children.
Back to blue players, and I am one. Yes, blue is toned down from what it used to be. That doesn't mean blue is bad. And until I see RtR fully spoiled, I'm not ready to say that blue is going to suck come October. It certainly doesn't suck now and hasn't sucked since Alara and Bloodbraid. Last night I ran into Delver and had my clock cleaned. It was a totally frustrating match that I couldn't wait to be done with.
News flash blue. You're still the top of the heap. So zip it.
Aggro players. You have NOTHING to whine about. I mean NOTHING, unless you're trying to make a mono red deck. You have Cavern of Souls, a bunch of uncounterable spells coming up, and a list of overpowered creatures that, if I had them 18 years ago, I would have been jizzing my pants.
You are so spoiled it's pathetic. Nothing you have is good enough for you.
And for everybody playing standard, this is the way it is. WotC is in the midst of record sales and record attendance. This is what the majority of Magic players today playing Standard want to play, creatures.
If you don't like it, play Legacy or something else. Standard is not for you and it's quite likely that it's not going to be for you any time in the near future.
Things change and evolve.
Land Destruction - DEAD
Card Denial - DEAD
Mill - DEAD
Permission - DEAD
Combo - DEAD
I have lost so much since I started playing this game that I don't even recognize it anymore. But I accept it because all that stuff that's dead?
NOBODY LIKED PLAYING AGAINST IT!
And if people don't like playing the game, they stop spending money on the game. And if THAT happens, WotC and Hasbro pack up their marbles and go home.
This is reality and THIS is what you have to deal with.
So instead of both sides (aggro and control) pissing and moaning about what they DON'T have, how about enjoying the game that they gave you to play with?
And if you don't, play another format or play another game.
But this *****ing from both sides is getting old and tiresome.

This is one of the most superb lines that I've ever read.
Quote from Bread ConnoisseurThe only advantage of mist raven is that it has flying, that is literally the only thing mist raven has that venser doesn't have.
Uh, wrong.
Your opponent could be packing his sweet karakas tech and bounce him.
How are you ever going to kick rite of replication on venser? 9 mana for 5 boomerangs is a fool's game; 9 mana for 5 boomarangs and 10 extra power is how you win.
Mist raven is the nuts with Soraya the Falconer. It's a glorious anthem on a stick that attacks as a group.
If you're facing down Imperial Archangel (and I mean, when aren't you), I would never want venser on my side. When she swings, I die holding a mirrorweave that would have won me the game if I was packing a better creature.
Of course, your venser could just fall prey to Chandra, the Firebrand's -2 ability with Scorch the fields backup. Getting 3 for 1'd is not my idea of proper magic.
Don't even get me started on mindslaver. How will you feel when your opponent takes your turn and whips out the classic;
(On his side) Quicken>Donate his Black Lotus>
(back to your side) Crack lotus>Mystical teachings for venser>play venser several times>Grapeshot you for game? He wouldn't have been able to do that if you weren't playing a card with flash like a dummy. He'd have to get Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir first, and the mana on the flashback for Teachings would probably ruin his chances of upping the storm count.
And finally, tell me the truth. Why are you even taking the risk of making your opponent remember that fever charm is in his sideboard?
??????
I don't even know why I try to reason with you people. -

Because everyone loves Stuffy Doll! The same reason Vampire Nocturnus was $20 before the price was adjusted for the M13 reprinting. Same with Serra Avatar. They're going deep with the reprints in this core set and I love it. -

I personally think he's very solid and would rate him as the 3rd Izzet card before testing, behind Izzet Charm and Fire//Ice. I think he has a pretty interesting mix of abilities that hit all the right notes for me: Its first ability is very flexible, providing interesting ramping capabilities (among other things) while simultaneously
protecting itselfallowing a profitable attack phase; its second ability protects itself while providing the player a way to close out a game when needed and can be used consecutive turns right out of the gate; and finally an interesting ultimate that has a good possibility of ending the game. And all this at the golden cost of 4 cmc. Needless to say, I'm very excited to test this card! From the DGM and Cube thread:

There is a difference between "Win More" and "Insuring the Win". Yes the other 6+cc cards can be played on an empty board. But they can be answered by the same *** effect that you're so sure makes this unplayable. This gives you the CA to continue your winning position if they happen to have an answer to your threats. And no, I'm really not concerned with the "extremely hard setup" of having at least a 3 power creature in play.

I know right? Is it just me or is GB the new GW?

Whenever a time counter is removed from Lightning Storm, it deals 3 damage to target creature or player.
