Because the two guilds that share a color with your guild and are from the same set are excluded. Your secret ally is always from the other set. In your example, Orzhov and Gruul are not possible pairings because they were with Boros in Gatecrash.

I get it... they want to make sure you get cards from all three sets instead of some pairings having cards from the same set.

    Thanks for the info!

I don't think they are going to make a new lord cycle... the lords from M10/M11/M12 still fit the N&N Crunch: blue mana - Merfolk Sovereign/Lord of the Unreal; black mana Cemetery Reaper/Captivating Vampire; red mana (Okay, this is the only one that does not work.); green mana Elvish Archdruid. Of course I could be completely wrong about this, but if it ain't broke don't fix it....

I honestly think that reprinting the M10 duals is the most UNLIKELY outcome. If you guys recall, the announcement of the reprinting of the M10 duals happened very early in the spoiler seasons for both M11 and M12. The mere fact that Wizards is dragging out releasing the information on those land slots to me (since this IS speculation after all) speaks much more to different lands being printed.

    Quote from Lbolt187
There is no reason we would be waiting this long before a confirmation of the land cycle so this is the cause of speculation imho.

If both of you and the many others that are using this reasoning will recall, the actual M13 preview season BEGINS tomorrow. Last week they were only spoiling cards that are in DotP2013 and M13 both. So whose to say that tomorrow they don't throw all the M* Duals on the Spoiler or something.

    Just my own humble speculation....:shrug::hide:

Does anyone know why there were no Alt art/Gateway cards for Avacyn Restored? Is that just one more form of player reward that they are taking away from us?

I have an issue with the Kuldotha Flamefiend Q&A.

    1) Pay to make token of K.F.
    2) while he is on the stack you chose which artifact you are going to sacrifice, once you've chosen it can't be changed.
    3) KF enters the Battle Field, you sac the artifact and spread the damage.

My question is... at what point do you have enough time to change him into an artifact with Liquimetal coating and then chose himself to sac?

You can't target him with the Coating until he is on the Battlefield, by the time he is on the battle field it is too late to chose an artifact to sac or distribute damage.

If I'm missing something here Please let me know!

Okay, here's my Theory: He said they are attacking Block Cohesion from a very different vantage point, what if that means from supplemental material released during a blocks cycle?

First you have Elspeth vs. Tezzeret which was the first Duel Deck that was hinted at being part of the story line for the upcoming set.

So what if we have: Scars of Mirrodin, Mirrodin Beseiged, Duel Decks: Mirrodin Pure vs. New Phyrexia, Dark Ascension.

I dunno, I could be completely off, do they Trademark Duel Decks as one whole name or just the 2 seperate factions in the set?

    Anyway, that's my opinion...

So here's my take on the whole Frost Titan thing...

F.T. reads: Whenever Frost Titan becomes the target of a spell or ability an opponent controls, counter that spell or ability unless its controller pays :2mana:.

I think alot of people consider this to mean that all spells cost an additional 2 mana to cast against F.T. but in actuality it's kind of like you playing a Force Spike or a Mana Leak without having to pay a mana cost.

So while it's a "may" ability, it's more like a semi-mandatory "may" ability. You can't just let them forget and then say "hah, hah you forgot to pay the additional cost, your spell dies..." Because unlike say, Soul Warden's life gain ability which doesn't go on the stack unless you choose to activate the "may" ability, there is an actual trigger that goes on the stack that asks for a payment, and if it's not paid the spell fails to target, because the target becomes illegal.

Example: Terminate goes on the stack targeting Frost Titan, F.T.'s counter ability goes on the stack, now original caster has to decide to pay 2 mana or not for the spell to legally target and Destroy F.T.

Does this make sense or am I just really tired and starting to hallucinate? Heh heh...

In the Fling/ Emrakul/ Reverberate question you make the comment: Note that this only works for objects used to pay the cost. Mana payments are not objects, so a copied Firespout will result in nothing but hot air.

This made me confused, are you talking about the fact that it wants specific colors of mana to set the damage or just any mana payment in general?

Example: Cast a Banefire and choose X=5 then cast Reverberate.

You should be doing a total of 10 damage because Reverberate copies the value of X made when casting the original spell. Are you saying this is wrong or were you saying that Reverberate wouldn't see the color of mana cast for the spell Firespout? But even with this spell I thought that when you copied a spell it copied all choices made when you originally cast the spell, so if you chose to pay both R and G and then cast Reverberate it would do a total of 6 damage to all fliers and non-fliers because of the original choices.

  • posted a message on [SoM] "Affiliated" Decks and "Integrated Consumer Experience" (Game Day Info)
    Quote from Lorelorn
Just to add more fuel to the split set idea, I received some WPN info on the Scars Game Day from wizards. The day will have an optional constructed feature called "affiliated decks". This is important enough to have specific prizes for - the prizes are preview cards for Mirrodin Besieged.

    From the email:
"The ultimate constructed deck event – with a twist!

Scars of Mirrodin Game Day gives your customers a shot at glory in the coming conflict. Available for the first time to Core level WPN locations around the world, Scars of Mirrodin Game Day is a great way for your local players to interact and see how the new cards shape the Constructed metagame.

Scars of Mirrodin Game Day features a standard format, showcasing the new cards in the most popular format world-wide. Players will also have the option to “affiliate” their deck to earn special prizes.

    Event Prizes
A foil card for the top 8 winners!
Preview cards from Mirrodin Besieged™ for the top 4 “affiliated” winners."

Also one of the key selling points given is "Scars of Mirrodin will have an integrated consumer experience unlike any previous Magic™ set."

First off let me state that I am not a TO and I can't say that the OP didn't receive this message, but, I am pretty involved with my local store and the owner is one of my close friends. I asked him if he had heard anything about this and he hasn't. He said that he only recently (last week) received a message containing M11 Game Day information.

This post has really been bugging the crap out of me and here's why:

    1) M11 Game Day info is just now coming out from Wizards (1 month after M11 was released)
    2) There has been no information released at all about the events of Scars Pre-Re/Release weekends past the dates they will happen.
    3) There is no date given for the Scars Game Day, and usually they tell you the names of the cards that they are giving out as prizes.
3.5) Why on Earth would they be giving out cards from a set that isn't going to be released until February? (I know that they sometimes do a single card when it's packaged with a special set, e.g. FtV Series, but that set also comes out generally a month or so before the new Block set releases.) Anythings possible, but it just doesn't sit right with me.
    4) I just feel like there is something wrong with this whole thing. Have any other TO's received this e-mail?

Anyway, if this turns out to be real, I'll apologize to the OP but like I said there's just something about it that bugs me...

Am I alone or does anyone else think this way?

  • posted a message on [MBS] Camera is "Mirrodin Besieged"
    Quote from Bass
The one thing that I find odd, is this: Let's say we have a draft of eight players. Now, 1, 3, and 4, all decide to draft Mirrodin Pure while the remaining five all pick New Phyrexia. 1 drafts a card from Pure and then passes his pack to 2, while 8 passes him a pack of... Phyrexia. So no matter what you picked, you could still end up drafting from both sets. Now, if that were the case you'd need both sets to work in either deck, which would harm the whole idea of two sets but it actually might be tons of fun in practice.

Another alternative is that when you draft your pack of Pure or Phyrexia, you choose in secret, then all the drafters reveal the pack simultaneously. At which point, only the players drafting Pure draft together and only the Phyrexia guys draft Phyrexia. So, in the above example, 1, 3, and 4 would draft between themselves, while 2, 5, 6, 7, and 8 drafting amongst themselves. But, that might be a logistical nightmare.

Obviously, if they're going to do this, Wizards would have playtested the idea extensively, so it'll be interesting to see how the set is designed and how draft works.

    This.

But the thing I was thinking was what if only players 1 and 4 picked Mirrodin Pure and 2, 3, 5, 6, 7 and 8 picked New Phyrexia? would those 2 players have to concede and pick Phyrexia or would they make a few of the Phyrexian players pick Mirrodin? You can't have a draft with only 2 players and have any kind of decent card pool. So I want someone who defends the theory that a split set wouldn't hurt Limited to explain to me how it would work out in a fair and balanced way.

    when is gameday
i really need to nab those slimes
plus i love the flavortext on fling

Game Day is Aug. 14th and 15th.

I am sooooooo looking forward to getting both of those Game Day cards.

As for Gateway, I love the Fling Art, it makes me long for the days when card text said things like: at EOT the creature is Killed... also the Ranger looks like he is wearing David Bowie's Outfit from Labyrinth...

I was going to tear his post apart, but I have to say his post really isn't.

So sorry, I didn't realize that I wasn't allowed to have my own opinion about the new set... next time I'll check with you before I post, okay?

    Quote from urzassedatives
For one, there are MORE goblins in M11 than M10...and blue got three fliers for the three he mentioned leaving...

Yes, M11 has 1 more Goblin in it vs. M10. But I didn't say that I wasn't happy with the Goblins in M11... Also, I realize they replaced 3 fliers with 3 fliers... and they may be better... all I said was those 3 were a favorite draft trio I had, maybe I'll like the new ones but since I haven't drafted them yet, who knows...

    Quote from urzassedatives
He thinks Overrun was a good thing at uncommon, yeah ok.

Where did you come up with that? I said nothing about Rarity... I was weighing the differences of the 2 cards...
    13) Still undecided if I like the swap of Overrun for Overwhelming Stampede, yes you could end up with some massive creatures, but when you are running a token type of deck there's nothing better than attacking with a large amount of 5/5 tramplers. But since they cut Howl of the Night Pack there probably aren't going to be many M11 Limited Token decks anyway...
    Quote from urzassedatives
More generic 'wahh Twilight' Vampire complaints. Listen, I hate Twilight with a burning passion, but it doesn't mean a thing when it comes to MTG. Cards are cards.

Once again you put words into my post... My comments had nothing to do with Twilight. Sparkly-Eyed was a way for me to poke fun at the name Captivating and the whole vampires are the coolest was a reference to Wizards putting a heavy emphasis on Vampires and changing a few Zombies that were in M10 into Vampires. If you noticed I backed up my complaint by pointing out that M11 had some solid new Zombies in it. Get over it...

    Quote from urzassedatives
Maybe it is red's turn to sit at the back of the bus, since it was just blue's?
    (Probably not)

It's your opinion about Red, and I won't bash you for feeling that way... so in turn don't bash me for feeling like Red lost a lot of good cards this set. The only things I said about Red was it lost "almost every" one of it's good Limited Haste creatures, a cheap way to deal with Artifacts, and probably the best IMO (which means In My Opinion) card for RDW (which in itself really has nothing to do with the color red in this set as a whole). And where is it written that Red and Blue can't both be good in the same set? Why does it have to be one or the other?

In short there is no need for you to "tear my post apart" because it was just a listing of my opinions... If you don't agree with me you can either not read it or reply with valid arguments and not just a string of accusatory remarks.

After looking over the card list there are a few things that I am disappointed in... (BTW much thanks to the OP for bringing this wonderful bunch of goodies to our Rumor Mill!!)

    1) No Hippie in Standard after rotation
    2) Arc Runner, a very much worse and scaled down version of Ball Lightning
    3) No more Earthquake
    4) Shatter being replaced by "Shatter Bear" which costs 1 more to play (even though I don't mind the fact that you get a creature out of it, I still would have rather kept cheap Artifact destruction) and the fact that they included Demolish which is currently located in Zendikar
    5) The removal of Air Elemental, Wind Drake and Snapping Drake (one of my favorite Blue Draft Trio's)
    6) The inclusion (once again...) of Relentless Rats (can't they just go away... I don't think anyone is really going to try to draft/build a rat deck considering that there is no other support for that deck)
    7) They removed IMO one of the best Dragons, Bogardan Hellkite, and replaced him with a near worthless one, Hoarding Dragon (Ex. I drop H.D. and search up Platinum Angel for exile, opp. drops Brittle Effigy, activates and exiles my Dragon... Poor P.A. now she's stuck in Exile. It should have been When H.D. Leaves the Battlefield...)
    8) The fact that they claim that the Core Set is supposed to be built to support the Previous block yet they removed almost every wall from M10. (This one doesn't bother me as much as others, I just think it's kindof funny)
    9) Goblins.... they removed Raging Goblin, Goblin Artillery and Siege-Gang.
    10) Did anyone else notice that they took away from Red almost every creature that had Haste and was worth drafting?
    11) A BIG one... they replaced Cemetery Reaper with "Sparkly-Eyed" Vampire (because we all know Vampires are the coolest...) and then proceeded to add several solid Zombies to Standard and one Titan that craps out Zombies like someone slipped him Exlax...
    12) Giving RDW one of the best cards (once again IMO) it's had in a while (Leyline of Punishment) and then turning around and cutting out one of the core cards in it (Ball Lightning (yes, I know, I'm bringing it up again)) and THEN printing a card that laughs in a Red Mage's face (Leyline of Sanctity). Oh well, with Shards leaving Standard and taking with it half of the cards I played in RDW (Hellspark Elemental, Hell's Thunder, Volcanic Fallout and Banefire) I guess the deck was doomed anyway...
    14) I HATE THE LIFE GAIN ARTIFACT CYCLE... It's definately time for it to go away... far away...
    15) Is it possible we'll see Darksteel in Scars?
    16) I just love how things like Nantuko Husk wasn't generic fantasy enough for M10 but his big brother and a few other cards are fine for M11.

Anyway, all in all, I am still excited about the majority of this set.
I just wish that in the future they would remember to call me and ask me what I would like to see in the Core Set... Teach

Okay, so I noticed no one else has mentioned this...

"The M10 reprint Haunting Echoes only has a few more months in Standard before it is ousted upon the release of Scars of Mirrodin and I am not going to let it sit on the bench here." - From 'Shades of Torments Past' -- Brian David-Marshall - Friday, July 02, 2010.
What is going on here???? Why would he make a statement like that if it is being reprinted?? Do they really keep the employees that aren't on the team that much in the dark??
I would have thought that they would have let him in on that card instead of letting him make that big of an erroneous statement, but oh well, I guess that's what I get for thinking...;)
