My money's on the samurai being Toshi, the protagonist from the CHK book. He has all the signs--ratty clothing from being in a lot of CHK's battles and living as a hermit at the end. On, and arms totally screaming "I CUT MYSELF THE NUMB THE PAIN!!!!1one" Yeah, that's Toshi, alright. And I'll bet the little hanging things are the artist's interpretation of how Toshi does some of his Kanji magic. Don't forget that Toshi was definitely a super swordsman in addition to being a Kanji mage.

And Toshi would have to be a black character (or part black in case he's gold.) In that case, the darkness of the lower half fits in with WotC's art style for card art sharing a color with its spell color.

Just barely getting this in the nick of time with the 48 hour entry period. Now, I would say 1337, but that would be silly and childish.

So I will say 1337. Wait, no, not that! Yeah, okay. 1337. Exactly 1337.

Nice to see a fellow from the CPA here as well. My trash needed to be taken out, anyway.

I got a good laugh out of that. Thank you very much for posting. Too bad you had to get banned from MTGNews to get the humorous images, though. Wait...how is being banned there a bad thing. Er, um...congrats? ;-)

    Best: Toshi, Chainer, Braids

What can I say? I'm a fan of black mages. Toshi has already been mentioned here. A cool rebellious black mage loner who is quick-witted when he needs to be. A guy who smart-mouths even in the face of near-certain death. One cool cat.

Chainer is similar, except he wanted to remake the Cabal in his image. And that image was snakes. Had he not killed himself with the Mirrari, the Cabal would have been one awesome order of snake mages. Skellum, his teacher, was also cool, and together they made one hell of a team. Not honorable or kind like Toshi, but he did have a heart for the people he knew well. His Death Bloom spell would've been awesome to see as a card.

Braids was a side character all the way to her sudden and shameful death in Scourge. She was best in the OTJ block, as the new author for OLS made her out to be a manic goat clown of sorts. Mad to the core, it would have been nice to see a card version of her that reflected her psychotic dementia summoner side. She killed the Patriarch with her dementia magic, after all!

Worst: Gerrard, Kamahl, Karona, Sash & Waistcoat

Gerrard I think so many people hate, there's no need to go into it. His face could be on a milk carton and people would smile rather than feel sympathy.

Kamahl was just dead boring. He's on this mystic quest and keeps revisiting the dead body of Laquatus because his sword is there with the Mirrari in it. He simply has no direction in his life, and would probably sit around in a mountain range with his thumb up his rear pondering how birdies can fly and stuff. But no, lucky for him, the Mirrari drove some of his actions, people trying to steal the Mirrari drove other actions, and when this dense, slow, dumb (and quite possibly "mentally handicapped") barbarian was unable to figure out what to do, on come Balthor and Jeska to coax him into action. Heck, Balthor had to come back from the dead just to help him with the simple task or getting back his sword. Quite braindead. And no fun to follow the adventures of.

Did I mention how the author for the OLS books made some stuff sour? Oh yes, plenty of bathroom humor all around! Dick and fart jokes for everyone! And the prime candidates for leading these things: Sash and Waistcoat. Two shadows of Ixidor, trained in the fine art of How to Be a Wannabe Stooge. From perving out in women's bath water to getting stuffed full of stray cats, these guys were one Mad TV skit after another. They might have been good characters had they not suffered from the author's constant injections of slapstick comedy.

  • posted a message on Your 3 *least* favorite sets
    1. Homelands -- Such a boring set. The storyline was weak and sort of...nonexistent. At least Fallen Empires had a good story going! Worst. Reason. To. Kill. Trees. Ever.
    2. Masques Block -- I know this is supposed to be a set, but when the psychotic power level of Urza block caused me to quit Magic, I thought about coming back to the game a few times. All those times, Masques block was such a bland pile of garbage, it kept me away. I played Doomtown and Pokemon during that time. Yeah...I said Pokemon. Much better use of time than playing with Masques cards.
    3. Odyssey -- Nothing really wrong with the set as far as play value goes, but limited it was too much of a shift from IPA drafting (which I totally loved). This set single-handedly caused me to stop drafting. I hate it in limited that much.

I went through a similar situation back when I was in high school (except my female friend was single so I thought it would work out better). I told her, and it blew up in my face. From what I've heard of similar stories, unless your friend is interested in you as well, it will blow up in your face if you say anything. You'll destroy the friendship.

So basically it's a gamble. How much do you value your friendship with her? If you do value the friendship, just don't say anything, and find another girl. (To inject some humor: It's not too hard. Only like three billion females on the planet.) Honestly, its the best thing.

Akki Raider is interesting. You don't think big red will run it, do you?

Honestly, goblin offering isn't all that good. Most goblins are pretty cheap, so regardless of what you sac, you're still paying four or five mana for him. Maybe it's just me, but I doubt he'll make the cut into extended gobbo sligh...

I was thinking the same. The other tribes have bigger meat to feed their dieties. However, if you get tired of your Goblin Mutant, well, now you have a place to fling him. Grin Grin Grin

And other than Goblin Mutant, I don't think there are any goblins that are usable and have a big casting cost. Only a psychopath would get rid of a Reckless One...if they were crazy enough to run it in their deck in the first place. Slant

    1. Invasion -- The set that brought me back to the game after Urza block caused me to quit.
    2. Fallen Empires -- Lots of chaff, but a lot of excellent commons that every beginner should have. Oh, and great storyline galore! Would have been a fun draft set if only it was bigger and came in 15-card packs. Also, the only set I ever made a complete set of.
    3. Unhinged -- Very new, and I haven't played it very much yet, but I love the casual flavor that just oozes from nearly every card.

My words exactly. Alex your work rocks! I'll be hunting down images for a sig banner (and maybe a new avatar too). Can't think of what I want at the moment, but I know I want something cool, in your "m4dd 1337 57y13z0r"!

Quite an awesome take on the Brothers there. If only the DCI Player Rewards were this cool--Alternate Anime Art for Your Favorite CHK Cards. Yeah, they'd have players flocking to events. Much faster than the textless stuff they're doing now.

Awesome info. Thanks for the linkage.

Anybody notice the second picture down on the Ink Eyes story? A group of undead getting up from a swamp. Three appear to be definite skeletons. Will skeletons be making a comeback? I hope so! They're one of my favorite black creature types.

*Fingers crossed they aren't gonna be zombies.*

    Keard. John Keard.

Nice to know there's more than one John around here. I mean, so many people, with one the line would be too long and the toilet paper would run out! [/bad humor]

You can all me anything you want as a nickname. Just don't call me late for lunch. Or, dinner either. Or, breakfast for that matter. While we're on it, NEVER call me late for any feeding time, even if the meal is dead horse on a stick with maggot sauce relish.
