Feb 4, 2014KnickM posted a message on Launch Giveaway!I know that it's an absurdly bad card, but I think that my favorite card is still Gabriel Angelfire. I remember when I first got one for my GW deck, before it was reprinted in Chronicles. I had a choice - for $17 I could get either Gabriel or the Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale. I was advised by the store owner to get the Tabernacle, and I kind of wish I'd followed that advice now, but I bought Gabriel and shuffled him into my 65 (60 card deck? What's that?). I don't know that I drew him in more than a handful of games, but I really liked playing with a Legend.Posted in: Announcements

Sure, there are better White creatures than the Master. But as has been pointed out earlier in the thread, creatures still do something. Quest for the Holy Relic does nothing on its own, and even if you do have a bunch of creatures, the payoff is that you get a Trusty Machete out and equipped at instant speed?
Exactly, mana curve. Which is why I feel they're kind of trying to go halfway between "let's get foil slivers to people" and "playable deck". We've got 10 slivers from Rath cycle that've never been foiled (Muscle and Crystaline were FNM foils), and a few from Future Sight that're appearing in the new frame. They could've put Sinew in the standard frame, or they could've smoothed out the mana a bit better, and it irritates me that they chose to do neither.
Yeah, I'm nit-picking, I know. I'm just trying to grok their logic.
So ... why not a Sinew and a Muscle, then, instead of two Muscles, if this is going to be a "let's showcase Slivers and get shiny ones in the new border into peoples' hands"?
I guess I'm just trying to figure out if this is supposed to be an all-star collection of slivers masquerading as a deck, or if it's supposed to be actually played as is on the kitchen table. A lot of people (myself included) are planning on breaking it up - is anyone out there actually going to play with it as a deck?
Good point about the lack of necessity for double color, but with 8 5-color lands already in, there's sort of a Reflecting Pool-shaped hole.
Not that I would in any way have argued with the inclusion of Gemstone Mine (and there's certainly nothing wrong with both - especially since the Mine was originally an uncommon).
You don't think that Duel Decks are at least partially aimed at new players?
"Here, for $20 you get a self-contained game that is designed to play out of the box. And if you enjoyed that, you can CHANGE THE DECKS."
I would see this as the product to buy after a pair of Duel Decks, for someone who wanted to start - now you have a whole box full of tools, and you can tinker with the decks all day long if you want.
I can definitely see the RG focus, but you're right - they should've given us Kazandu Refuge, and a 5-color rare land.
But I'm not going to complain either if they want to double the number of Crags I have.
Scapegoat, no. Guinea pig, sure.
Concur. I gotta wonder why they decided to go with Rootbound Crag over Reflecting Pool, especially when they're already throwing in Vivid lands.
Yeah, check out the slivers on Gatherer, and for the $70 MSRP it'd cost to get two, get your own deck and a solid manabase.
Announcing ...
Duel Decks: Sky vs Ground!
Each deck comes with four foil copies of the newly-reprinted Earthbind, back by popular demand with original artwork. The sky is falling this Febtober - and it has teeth!
Clearly, you've never been monologued at. It's a disturbing experience.
I acknowledge my human failing, and that my reaction to the card is based on flawed psychology and an incomplete sample.
She kinda poisoned him. OK, not kinda. She did poison him.
Maybe they don't like you either.
I've had literally three opponents try to Magma Rift my creatures as an instant and start cursing when they re-read the card. Then they don't play it on their turn. Maybe I'll value it higher once I see it actually kill a creature - I'll take it the next time I'm playing red, and try to be fair to it.
I can definitely get behind you on the Runeflare Trap, though. Good call.
Maybe I'm biased because I 3-for-1'ed with this card in the last ZEN I played, but instant global damage seems decent. How often have you attacked and had your opponent block so that his/her creatures were taking almost lethal? A lot, I bet. It's not just one damage - you have to think of it as one MORE damage mid-combat.
I'd put Magma Rift last - 3 mana and a land for sorcery-speed damage to a creature?
