So they become one creature and it gains all abilities of the creatures forming the "band"?
Not really... It's only one creature in terms of attacking and blocking. if you band 3 2/2's it is effectively 1 6/6 as far as attacking and blocking is concerned. Any abilities that each creature has it retains. A Zuran Spellcaster blocking in a band can still tap to deal 1, but the other creatures in the band can't, and the other creatures in the band will not become tapped.
And only 1 creature from the attackers or blockers is necessary to create a banded creature?
You need 2 creatures, and at least 1 of them must have banding. You can put as many creatures into a band as you want, but only 1 of them can be without banding.
Basically... If attacking creatures are banded together, then they count as 1 creature, so if one is blocked, the are all blocked. The catch is, you get to decide how the blocking creature or creatures assign combat damage to your creatures.
If the banded creatures are blocking, then it works pretty much the same. The banded creatures are one creature, and you decide how your opponents deal their damage to the creatures.
For example, if you were attacked by a 4/4 and you banded together 2 3/3's to block it, then you would decide how the 4 damage was divided among your creatures, whereas normally the attacking player would decide.
Just a quick tournament update: I piloted my Ponza deck to 4th place in FNM last night :). Thankfully Ravager did not even make it to top 4. I beat it soundly twice in a row. First place went to this wierd Tooth and LD deck that runs stone rain and plow under with cloudpost. Also placing ahead of me was a Broodfinity deck and a g/b control.
