This is gonna be a long list. Played: MTG, Battletech, L5R, DBZ, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Austin Powers, WWE, MLB Showdown, NFL Showdown, Sim City, Harry Potter, Star Trek, Star Wars (Decipher), Star Wars (WotC), NBA Showdown, Pokemon, LotR, and VS System. That doesn't count all the CMGs and deckbuilding games (Dominion et. al.) I've played.

Wanted to bump this thread now that the second half of Season 7 is underway. And what a reintroduction it was! Snazzy new set for the TARDIS, The Doctor behaving like a lovable kid that switches to badassness when needed, and an intriguing setup with his new companion. Personally, I hope that Clara's personal relationship is more in line with Donna Noble than most of the others (Rose Tyler and to an extent Amy Pond). You know, a companion who's there to keep him in line and keep him grounded instead of someone to fawn over The Doctor.

Speaking of Donna Noble, could we just get Wif back as a companion? Even though he was in something like only 3 episodes as a companion he was pretty damn cool. And funny. Easily makes my "top companions of new Who" list.

Terrible shooting. What's worse is that I live about 15 minutes from that theater and would have gone if my manager hadn't put me on a 10-hour shift last night. I was too damn tired to see a 3 hour movie. I have several friends that would have gone but decided on karaoke instead. It's an awesome neighborhood, and I still don't understand why anyone could kill at a damn comic book movie? Horrible.

Certainly true (though the attractive man list doesn't end there), but don't discount the idea that the film could just be appealing to female moviegoers for other reasons. It doesn't hurt that the movie is just great to begin with, but it's also worth noting that despite having only one major female character and only two supporting women, The Avengers presently women very positively. Black Widow was no more sexualized than Captain America (a friend of mine noted that for every butt shot of ScarJo there was one of Chris Evans and that their costumes were equally as tight) and outside of a couple of situations that the Black Widow herself created, her being a woman was never brought up as an issue. At no point did any of the boys see her as weak for being a woman, they never tried to dissuade her from the fight, they all trusted that despite having no discernible powers she was capable enough to hold her own against a god and his massive alien army. Then there's Maria Hill and the second supporting female character (I'm not sure if discussing her constitutes a spoiler), who really don't play huge roles in the film but are still treated as strong, capable people who just happen to be women and not men (one is a brave soldier and loyal SHIELD agent and the other is a strong businesswoman and the only woman smart enough to go toe-to-toe on a daily basis with the film's biggest ego). That's very subtle and at no point does the movie sit up and demand that we pay attention to how equally it's treating women, but it's something positive we can walk away with. In our group, the two girls we went with picked up on that and mentioned the equal treatment of women (in capability if not in balanced numbers).

tl;dr -> Joss Whedon wrote women like he always writes women. I can't think of a Whedon production where this DOESN'T happen. The strong women thing I mean.

I had a MASSIVE geekgasm at the first stinger. I've been waiting forever for Thanos to become big-screen villain, and I really hope that movie gets made soon. I've also seen some people suggesting Ultron for Avengers 2 over Thanos, mostly because of Whedon's desire to make Avengers 2 smaller in scope. My only problem with that is that you'd have to introduce Ant-Man along with Ultron, and I don't know if Ant-Man can be done well in a movie. His power is a little weird outside of comic books, and we already have the technological genius part taken care of with Iron Man.

I'm all out of it. Seriously, I don't know what I'm doing with my life. I've been unemployed since I graduated college last year. I wasn't really employed then either, because I have ADHD and it makes it difficult for me to concentrate on multiple things at once. Like, I did pretty well in school but I had to spend all my time out of class on my homework because it took a bit longer to finish it because I had a hard time concentrating. Anywho, I've been floundering for the last year and I have nothing to show for it. I've tried everything I can think of. I try applying to the fast-food joints, I try applying to big-box place (Target, Wal-Mart, etc.), and I either don't get an interview or I get rejected quickly. I try using my degree for something but I've been getting rejected from theatre internships constantly too. I know that theatre's an extremely competitive field. It's more the former that's got me depressed: the rejections from Wal-Mart and the like. I have completed on average half a dozen applications a day for the past year. That's, what, 1000 applications so far? And 1000 rejections. I need some sort of steady income. Right now I do contracted stage management, but that never pays more than $400 a run. That's for 2 months of work. And my friends haven't been much help either. After a year of this sometimes I feel like quitting everything. I don't know what more I can do, and it's like I'm running on empty.

Michael Bay doesn't really care about the history or canon of anything he works on. Actually, he doesn't care about anything but $$$. I see Bay fans like I do Tebow fans or hard left/right wing people: totally beholden to what their idol says, never thinking he/she is wrong ever, and their idol is infallible. Bay is an idiot. I am royally pissed off beyond measure. I thought that Transformers 3 pissed me off? Oh no. Bay just made it to the top of my "most hated" list.

    Screw him.

    You're tearing me apart, thread!

So been pretty busy. Current show closes this weekend. Next show has rehearsals in about 10 days. I also got offered an internship in San Fran. Only problem is that it doesn't pay and the company doesn't provide housing. And I have very limited funds. On the other hand, it is a high-end theatre that's a lot bigger than anything else I've worked in. Gotta see if I can swing something by the end of the week. Plus my car crash is looming over my head. Sooooo many things going on I can hardly keep 'em straight.

Crovax, your volunteer experience in with the Theatre company is good. Have you included it in your resume, alone with your responsibilities?

I have. Actually, it's pretty much the only thing on my resume. And I've moved from one theatre to another fairly often so that my resume is now about 2 pages long. Perhaps employers see this moving and get the wrong impression?

    Quote from Jay13x »
You may want to look into jobs were similar skill sets are required - event planning, catering, 'coordinator' positions, etc. Look around at hotels and event management companies. Make sure you update your resume and get it reviewed by someone who can give you real advice on how to sell yourself. A good place to get started is front desk jobs at hotels, and then move into other positions as they become available.

I've been told as much by my theatre professor who used to work as a stage manager. Union member too. I've got someone I vaguely know who works in hotels, I'll see what I can do there. This ties in to my friends: most of them have basic entry-level jobs with very little pull. I ask about openings whenever I work a show but obviously nothing comes of it.

    Quote from Jay13x »
Also look at actual paying theatre jobs in your area. Don't expect to have the same level of authority that you do at your volunteer job - starting out you are worth exactly nothing and you''ll need to prove yourself.

I do get paid in community theatre, it's just that it's way too little to get by on. The summer job I signed a contract for is paying $400 to work from May through July. 3 weeknights and weekends for rehearsals, then weekends only for performances. I've also been applying like mad for internship positions at the higher-tier theatres across the country. Ones that pay better and offer food and housing on top of the pay.

    Quote from RabidVacin »
Ever think about moving? I once read an article where the job market can vary wildly from one metropolitan area to another. DC has the best job market with a 1 to 1 ratio of job seekers to jobs. Miami has the worst job market with a ratio of 1 job for every 9 job seekers.

Very hard for me to do. Most of my contacts are in cities where the job market seems to be even worse: Chicago, New York, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Phoenix, etc. So if I were to go into a city with a better job market it'd be a huge risk: I would know nobody and while I'd have better job prospects, I worry about even more financial responsibilities without a guarantee of income (I know it's never guaranteed, but you get my point).

    What is your degree in?

Honestly, the market out there is awful. Out of my four closest friends (we are all around your age), only myself and one other have what you would call a real job. Of the others - one has a BA and works part time for a community organization teaching art, on has a BS and works for a small collector's toy store, and the other has been in community college for two-three years, has no degree yet, and works at an office supply store.

I might be of more help once you let us know your skill set. What do you do for the theatre company?

My degree is a basic theatre degree, but I also minored in political science. For theatres most of my experience is in stage management. I know how to keep everything running smoothly in a theatre production. I've managed quite a few of the more successful shows in town, and even have a couple glowing letters of recommendation for the field. Still, that's about the only experience I have.

And as for completely open availability like Chaotix suggested, there's a weird, well, paradox that occurs there for me. I do keep my schedule as open as possible. The thing is that even getting to the interview stage is rare for me. So I do the theatre thing because even though the pay sucks, there's still pay. And when I do get invited for an interview it's usually during the time in a production where it's almost impossible for me to bow out. The last interview I went on was at a local Olive Garden, and I would have started a week before my production's "hell week". Plus I've since gotten hired on for a summer production.

Herein is my problem: On one hand I do want to have completely open availability. On the other, I don't want to have to wait around for an interview when these stage management "jobs" have started to come easily for me.

I am in need of some advice please. I'm getting very discouraged with my job prospects. More to the point, I'm 26 now and I haven't had what one would call a real job yet. I've graduated from college with my B.A., and I've applied to every business that I can think I'd be qualified for, but I'm getting nothing. Absolutely nothing. It doesn't help that I'm unavailable most evenings due to my commitments to the community theatre scene here in town. Plus I've got a major payment coming up that I can't pay for without a job. I've been trying to get a job for years now. I've been to temp agencies, I've been to the local businesses around my apartment, I comb CraigsList, Monster, and the other job-seeking websites all day, and I constantly fill out applications for places like King Soopers, Wal-Mart, McDonalds, and the like. I feel like I'm doing all I can to get a job, but it seems that due to my age and lack of experience nobody wants to hire me. I just don't know what to do anymore. Advice plox?

So much for me to catch up on. Let's start slow.

E-Books: Hate the things. If I want to read a book I much prefer the feel of actual paper. Though with my hectic schedule I've gotten much more fond of audio books. Just picked up the audio version of Hitch-22. I miss Hitchens. Sure he could be an *******, but he was a very studious and articulate *******.

Dagg's Birthday: Happy (belated) Birthday Daggs! And congrats on the monetary win! Always good to be rewarded for doing something you're good at.

talore/Yukora's dates: Glad to hear you got some dating going well! Wish I could say the same. Prolly mentioned it back a few pages: GF decided to pull the "great guy but..." thing on me just before my newest show opened. Need to find someone who can stay with me for a while lol

So much has happened to me. Bad news: got in a minor accident on Thursday. Good news: car that I hit drove off. Bad news: still got a ticket. Good news: car's damage shouldn't be that bad. Bad news: still struggling with getting a damage estimate from the body shop. Good news: starting work on yet another show. Bad news: said show is up in the mountains. I'd better have my car fixed by then! Also I'm in the same boat as Daggs. Been applying almost nonstop for jobs and still nothing. I'm getting fed up with my inability to find employment. Especially with a car to get fixed up.

I consider myself and agnostic, but I have been verging on atheism lately.

Come all the way over to the dark side. We have cookies!

Grew up in a fairly normal and open-minded household. Sure I went to church when I was very small but as I grew up I realized that I just didn't believe in the "invisible man living in the sky" to borrow a phrase from Carlin. The only trouble my atheism got me into was with one of my cousins. Way back when the blogs here on Salvation first sprang into being I started writing weekly about my thoughts on the world. Naturally religion was a big theme. Let it slip that I was sympathetic to atheists in a conversation with the youngest cousin I have in the religious part of my family. Got an earful. Other than that nothing. Mostly the conversations have been making fun of my desire to go into theatre.:p

Speaking of which, director man doesn't know what he's doing. Play takes place in a basement and he's got stage lights at full. There's a part of the play where there's just a video playing for 5 minutes and the characters are doing nothing. Keeps bringing the action to a halt in order to give notes, during tech week. Shrugs off the mispronunciation of Italian words. Mysterious force that enters during climax is represented by a weird video that starts with Darth Maul. I love the guy and he's been a close friend and my best ally in breaking into Denver theatre, but he can't direct to save his life. This show is gonna suck.:ria:

Last year I applied to over 100 jobs which resulted in only three interviews. Been working at flooding the market with my resume...but I'm actually taken aback at how few jobs are being advertised. Seemed that last year at this time there were plenty, but now? Perhaps I'm only imagining it.

Been doing the same thing. Counted up the theatres I'm applying to: 20 of 'em. I'll be surprised of any of them get back to me though. And as for day jobs I apply to at least 6 a day and I've got bupkes. Don't think you're only imagining it: I too think a lot less jobs are being advertised.

I'm still getting used to this diminished responsibilities thing for my current show. All I'm doing is running sound. Never had so little to do. Usually work as SM, and that's A LOT more active. Much more to do as an SM. Hope I can get something more meaty after this show. And as for that phrasing, you're welcome DUX.
