CavalryWolfPack posted a message on The State of Modern Thread (B&R 11/03/2019)For the record, just because someone talks about Twin doesn't mean they're breaking the rules. Talking about Twin is not flaming, trolling, misbehavior, or spam. I'm going to start dishing out infractions for abusing the reporting system if it keeps up. Please only report posts that actually break our rules, not ones that have content you disagree with. The presence of Twin in a post is not a qualifying factor for violating the rules, and while posts that do break these rules and contain Twin content certainly exist, the vast majority of reports we've gotten haven't been. This is the first and only warning I'm giving to this thread as a whole.Posted in: Modern Archives -

Bearscape posted a message on The State of Modern Thread (B&R 21/01/2019)IdSurge's signature quote from Renegade Rallier stung so deep it made me post on mtgs for the first time in like a monthPosted in: Modern Archives
The difference in how people experience modern right now baffles me. Since the printing of phoenix and the rise (and fall) of KCI, to me, modern is the worst it has ever been sans eldrazi winter and maybe treasure cruise (and at least cruise decks were generally interactive). But somehow there are also people that experience current modern as being one of the best formats ever!
Modern has always had this double-edged sword of limitless variety where, since everyone plays yank they like, you can play the yank you like. But if you actually would try to max your win percentage to steal a big tournament, there are at most 5 decks you should seriously consider. Isn't it just common sense that if you have to submit to the matchup lottery, the winning strategy is to linear as hard as possible and steal at least game 1?
People sticking with decks they've played for years is also a big factor. I've played Jeskai Control since basically the inception of modern, and I still jam it at FNM because I love the deck. But I did buy into Grixis Death Shadow for big tournaments because honestly there is no reward to playing any form of control now. But if this "meta memory" didn't exist, if people's card collections and all memory of Modern would disappear over night, a massive portion of the decks people still to this day register at tournaments would never exist. Because why in the world would you buy into Jeskai Control, or BGx, or a CoCo deck, when there's so much linear nonsense to completely invalidate your deck game 1?
It has become incredibly frustrating to discuss changes in modern, where at the start of this increase in linearity I'm arguing with people that this plate of pasta would be much better if we removed the gravel from it, and people insisting the gravel is just fine. And now months later I see people happily devour an entire brick, and I see people likeminded to me also be baffled at these people eating bricks, but the brickpeople are discussing their favourite flavour of brick, telling me to adapt and take another plate of brick. -

Spsiegel1987 posted a message on Temporary 3/13/2017 banlist update discussion thread ("No Changes")Posted in: Modern ArchivesQuote from Wraithpk »I think Traverse is secretly the broken card in that deck. It lets you effectively run 8 copies of DS and/or goyf, making the deck a lot more consistent than it probably should be.
I wouldn't debate or argue against you about Traverse. I think a traverse ban could see a replacement, something like Grim Flayer.
I think if WOTC really wanted to hamper the deck, they could try to ban Bauble (no deck uses it), and if that's not enough, Wraith.
I know Sheridans going to be like, "hey, still not enough time, wait before the hysteria".
I'm not saying to ban it now, but my intuition is telling me the deck is too good, and me playing this deck on mtgo is only backing it up, it just has too many 50/50s and a bunch of favorable matchups.
The meta isn't going to adjust, it runs eight discard in the maindeck, and about 1 to 3 collective brutalities in the sideboard. It also has a backup combo with temur battle-rage. It's really hard to battle the deck with all these discards, a 1 mana fatal push, and a 1 mana huge body, along with a Goyf averaging 6/7.
The deck is more in the subtlety too good category, not the broken, oh my god, this is defcon one ban type of good -

the meta was not always like this and won't be either
and since the linear are a problem, common sense dictates that we need better answers (especially in counterspells)
if we unban JTMS/Preordain/AV and the like, perhaps we will not be able to give blue anything else
+Snapcaster is still the most powerful individual card in Modern and was close to ban with Twin legal, how premature is it to just pair him with broken or boarderline broken cards?...
i can see close to 0 chance in which we can unban those and keep snap legal, it just makes Blue leagues better than the other colors in terms of midrange/control cards
We get it, you hate blue. It's ok to have opinions, but not to try and pass them off as fact.
Nevermind the fact that blue is hot garbage right now and outside of Merfolk, has no Tiered representation except the very bottom of T2/2.5 with a single deck that has been expressed as "technically T2 but with an unbelievably massive gap between T1" -

I think even the "no-BL" crowd is going to have to settle on a small BL.
Had a conversation with a couple people at my local store getting ready for a No-Ban Modern tourney. Neither of them were running Clamp or Mental Misstep. I asked why, since their decks could easily utilize them both.
"No way, those cards are completely busted."
Me: "Isn't that the point of No-Ban?"
Them: "No, it's the have a balanced Modern that doesn't have Wizards ****ing it up all the time."
Me: "SO why not play the best cards available?"
Them: "Clamp breaks the game, it's stupid."
So... yeah... -

Melkor posted a message on Current Modern Banlist Discussion (9/28/2015 update - No changes!)Well, hopefully my Snapcasters don't plummet, but I have lost all faith in them. I was not a Twin player, didn't like the deck, but I am selling out of Tron or any other deck that can die from a banning. This policy of using a chainsaw for surgery is worse for Modern than the List is for Legacy. I don't see new players coming over ever again if they know Wizards delights in killing format pillars entirelyPosted in: Modern Archives - To post a comment, please login or register a new account.

In modern, that card is very costly and all your combo opponent has to do is just play pact of negation as it's free and doesn't pitch a card if they are playing combo. Or in the case of the majority of decks in modern simply put creatures and merc you while you stare at your fancy force of will wannabe.
For people being like, "Oh don't sell your stuff." I get discouraged at the fact that the one card that I was really looking forward to is now most likely gone out of the set. I really didn't want force of will or force of negation.
If no swords or counterspell then **** it I'm out.

One card for an additional mana source? Yep definitely not broken lol.
EDIT: Just so we're clear yes I understand with the chrome mox it's two cards out of your hand, still leads to degeneracy though.

I also think we may have over estimated the reprints in this set.
Based on watching the announcement video and how the Wotc employees reacted when counterspell was mentioned was very interesting. During mentions of wasteland and TNN they just nodded and smiled.
When counterspell was brought up, the Wotc employee immediately was like, "we're not promising this is in the set." and went on an explanation.
Now that could be for a multitude of reasons. Some would say this is to not leak additional cards and keep expectations low. However it could be the opposite.
It could be that counterspell isn't there and other legacy reprints are things like oubliette.
This means that the set has a high chance of being a dud IF they
they decide not to push it too much.

Whir prison with thopter sword combo can be a great way to enjoy an esper list without committing to full control.
There are controlling elements of the deck and you can get an engine online with sword of the meek and thopter foundry few decks can fight effectively once you have all your prison pieces.
If you want to be grindy control that is great against midrange or control strategies straight esper control can scratch that itch. There is also a good thread in established control with varying builds.
Really it depends on your meta and how much you care about winning in that meta vs just playing for the aspects of play that certain decks will allow you to experience.

This transformative nature of the deck and angle of attack that pyromancer's ascension gives the deck is pretty powerful as well.
An example of this is the Dylan Donnegan match where he was able to cycle through his entire deck at one life and kill his opponent from 21 life in a very storm-esque fashion.
The xerox nature of the deck is why it can transform into ascension so easily. Multiple people pointed out this as a very big possibility post KCI ban and it seems they were correct that those decks would pick up the metashare.
Hopefully, MH and WAR come with some tools that fair decks need again to fight this. As I've stated, I do not think that control decks are far off and don't need insane answers printed but we do need some additional tools to win games.

Sometimes having negate or logic knot at the wrong times can lead to losses. If I get counterspell this will help my decks with some consistency and as much as it will homogenize my counters and it also affords me some ability to put in one-offs since I have a consistent turn 2 counter. I've used one counterflux in jeskai builds or one to two disallow before however, these do not pair well with conditional counterspells because it may force you to use this for the wrong situation instead of holding it for what you actually have it in the deck for.
Also, for the arguments that I need some sort of hammer to win games consistently, I am pretty sure jace or teferi can definitely fill this role, especially when backed by counterspell. I am missing why I need some magical I win button. I play control to grind my opponent methodically and play the matchup as best I can.
This is why I don't play combo. If you're wanting a magical T4 I win button, and you're asking for certain things to be back because you think that's control. It's not. It's tempo combo which is completely different.
Stop asking for combos back under the guise of it being for control reasons.
