When is the first major Modern event? I have been sitting on a stack of cards I want to sell since I am getting out of Magic but I wanted to wait and see if anything spikes.

I am about to sell my collection. Sitting on lots of Modern and Legacy cards with no Modern or Legacy community to speak of and I barely get to play nowadays anyways because I work at night. I don't wanna sit on all this money and do nothing with it so I am going to sell probably in january.
When my playgroup first started we built decks around our favorite cards and just played for fun. No worrying about what the most efficient cards were, no power trading to get that playset of $50 cards. No format bias. Just great fun around the kitchen table with pizza, drinks, and friends. Now nobody wants to play unless its cube, limited, or standard. The community has sucked the fun out of this game (here in Vegas at least) by turning every format into some ultra competitive funsuck where people don't even want to play a random game unless it is against a tier one deck testing for a tournament. Anything else is dubbed a waste of time. I just want the variety back in the game.
A core set featuring cards that could be used in non-Standard environments that was printed every other year? You could have the reprints that don't fit anywhere ( Noble Heirarch, Thoughtseize, etc...), new powerful cards could be printed without interfering with Standard, non reserve list legacy cards could be added to Modern, and new answer cards could be printed to help keep a safety valve on the format. The set would be designed as draftable, and could use a small to medium print run (though bigger than modern masters since there will be new cards too) in order to not devalue the reprints. I think it would be pretty cool and have people stay involved with Modern for the long haul.
My friend was not going to buy Tarmogoyf (due to price) until he opened one in is Modern Masters box. He then went out and purchased another 3 to complete a playset. In essence, the one he got prompted another 3 to be taken out of the market.
I suspect this may have happend to many people. Being 25 to 50% on the way to a playset of cards you have wanted seems to be a reasonable impetus to actively seek out the remainer.
Similar situation to me. I had no intention of picking up Goyf but I got a deal on one at GP Vegas and it then spurred me to trade into 3 more from various vendors. If I hadn't got the first I wouldn't have bothered with the set.
Not really anymore because nobody ever wants to trade unless its for the big money cards and even then they don't wanna trade unless its going to benefit them.
I am very similar to your friends. I like thematic and conceptual decks. I also just like playing with cards that are cool even if they're suboptimal. He just has to come to terms with losing more than he would if he was playing a tier deck. Its the only way to brew without resenting the game when you don't find success.
Personally I don't really have a problem with combo decks when they are at reasonable speeds but decks like Belcher, ANT, Minds Desire, Show And Tell, and the like force games into being have the answer on turn 1 or die decks and even then sometimes they can still go off. That is not fun to me and way too polarizing. It is why I stay away from legacy. If I am forced to have a Force Of Will or Thoughtseize on my first turn or die then I don't want to play that kind of Magic. Also as stated combo decks like Eggs, High Tide, and old Time Sieve aren't necessarily broken but essentially turn Magic to Solitaire and those games suck as well. This is why I like Modern as a format and if Wizards would just reprint more staples and unban more cards it would be perfect for a player like me.
