Gremlin: I am also an advocate of sink into takenuma but I dont see it being all that usefull in the mirror, being in a metagame dominated by MBA I simply cannot maindeck a card that is dead in the mirror. So I ask you this, is your metagame ruled by aggro or control, and how often did the sinks work against aggro decks, compared to how often they didnt work. I would also like to point out that playing a sink and expecting to drop a few guys into play afterwords seems pretty stupid, since you will lose so much tempo. Basically I want to know exactly how the sink worked FOR YOU. I dont want theory from other people, I want to know how it really worked for you.

The testing i was supposed to do ended up being fairy irrelevant, since the people i wanted to test against never showed up, but i can say that MBA has an ok matchup versus U/B toshiro control, I told you it wasn't very helpful.

The reason I would never consider NosB is because even though in the WW matchup we are the control, we are still a creature based deck that wanted to win with multiple creatures, and NosB will slow us down and give them time to find what they need. I like Hideous Laughter because you can hold back the guys that it kills until after you play one, there is also the fact that sometimes a single hand a cruelty can beat them for you by shutting off their attack while your superior guys smash face.

Well, im off to my tournamnet in about 3 hours and i'll test then, I might post results here later, but maybe tomorrow.

I have to admit that i underrated nezumi graverobber at first. I thought he was only really good against gifts and maybe TOGIT control, but in round three (vs. mirror) i realized that this is not the case, as his flipped graverobber killed me game 2.

@darkmindtone: the ninja player you played in round three was my ride home, he also ended up 4-2 and got 9th. I'm glad that you were the guy to beat the only 4-2 in top 8, since he beat us out on tiebreakers just barely(nah, i really hold nothing against the guy). I also was wondering if that U/W control deck made top 8, i mean it should be an auto lose to aggro, but beat control every time. I could not believe that kids luck if he made top 8.

What does everyone think of kiku's shadow? It kills most of the guys in the format, and if worst comes to worst, you can swing into their guy, and use the shadow to finish it off. it is also much broader than hero's demise, and is good in the mirror unlike whisper. I have a couple other ideas floating around, but wont get a chance to test them till tomorrow. I'll be in a draft that you need to get invited to by the store owner, and the only way to get invited was to win a tourney at the store, so the prize should be pretty big, wish me luck. I'll get there an hour or so early, test, then test more between rounds, and probably test for a while after.

EDIT: @KPDALY16: I never wished the scourges were razorjaws, but that was because i either was manascrewed whenever it would have made any difference, or was already so far behind that i needed to block (specifically rounds 1 and 3, and game 1 of round 5, note that all these games are the mirror) From my experience, one of the most important factors in the mirror is whoever gets an active manriki first. tech cards are good, but if their guys are just bigger than yours, chances are they're going to win.

@McFrosticles: did you go to the GPT at dream wizards on 7-10, and if so how did you do? I went with MBA and ended up 4-2 getting me 10th out of 35 or so. The only 4-2 that made top 8 was tommy ashton, who has already done quite well in an event or two with U/R splice, and recently won regionals for the college park MD area i believe. I also dont think the deck you lost to in the finals is that popular since there were none that i saw at the GPT (35 people, go figure) there were a few G/R snake decks though.

This is the list I played, you can critique it if you'd like, and I know its not perfect because i was missing a few cards and didnt get to test much, since I found out about the tournament 2 days ago, and couldnt find a test partner in time. (the tourney was today as i type this.)

    4 Raving Oni-Slave
    4 Hand of Cruelty
    4 Ogre Marauder
    4 Takenuma Bleeder
    3 Yukora the Prisoner
    3 Scourge of Numai

    4 Distress
    2 Mark of the Oni

    4 Umezawa's Jitte
    3 O-Naginata
    2 Manriki-Gusari

    1 Tomb of Urami
    22 Swamp

    Sideboard
    1 Manriki-Gusari
    1 Mark of the Oni
    4 Hideous Laughter
    3 Cranial Extraction
    3 Sink into Takenuma
    3 Hirobi's Whisper

Now i know what most of you are thinking, "NO REMOVAL MAINDECK!!", and you are probably right to think that it is not a good idea. I originally had a more rat oriented build, but saw a list that won a PTQ already and believed that playing more fatty creatures would help me against decks playing Final Judgement, and would greatly decrease the usefulness of opposing Hideous Laughters, while increasing the usefulness of the ones i sided in.

heres a short summary of my matches:
EDIT: heres a LONG summary of my matches

    round one vs. mirror match

Game one i get a good 2 land hand and never draw another land, I still had some game with distress, oni-slave and a hand, but it was no match to his smooth draw. I did notice he was running a LOT of 1 and 2 toughness guys, so i sided in the laughters as well as the 3rd manriki and mark of the oni.

Second game I keep another promising 2 land hand, and proceed to never draw another land until the turn before i die......aweome......what a great way to start out. i traded between rounds and then...

Round two vs. Kai Budde's Kite control

Game one i think it is the mirror for a while, but when he plays a tendo on turn 3 i realize it is not, the SDT he played gave it away, so i beat with an oni-slave and bleeder and then distressed for something i dont remember, he drops NosB and i just beat him to around 8, then I distress again and see 1 terashis grasp and 3 tendo, that was pretty much game right there.

Game two i bring in the 3rd mark, and the extractions and sinks, i didnt draw any of them, though and some guys and some distresses took it al lthe way. I have to say i hope this deck catches on, cause it is a great match-up.

    Round 3 vs the mirror

Before i even sit down i saw a nezumi cuttroat and am pretty happy since that means a mirror match where my opponent is playing cards that arent to good against me. my happiness quickly fades as i have a dismal draw off a good hand, and he removes the 2 creatures i get all game and has little trouble with my life total.

Game two i sided in the laughters again since they killed most of his creatures, and obviously brought in manriki and mark, i sided out the distresses though, since i thought i needed to keep creatures since he had lots of removal, i think i did take out 1 hand and 1 marauder since they die to laughter. i think the correct idea here is to take out O-naginata, and i realize that now, buts its a little to late, as i get stuck on 2 and his manriki strands 2 jittes, 2 manrikis, and an o-naginata in my hand. i think about dropping to draft but realize there may not be enough people that want to draft and realize 4-2 has a chance, so i stay in.

Round 4 vs random U/W control

Game one i am really slowed down a lot by getting stuck on 2 AGAIN, and then he drops a third turn ghostly prison. I end up getting o-naginata and an oni-slave, and attack with it and then distress away a final judgement, and he doesnt draw anything but counters and scoops it up.

Game 2 i side in sinks and extractions, and then proceed to draw none of them. my opponent kept badgering me about how i played slowly first game (i think A LOT, ask anyone whos ever played me) and after about 10 seconds of shuffling slams down his deck and starts trash talking, about 20 seconds later he starts complaining about how im taking to long to shuffle, and i really want to tell him to shove it up his ass, but didnt really want a DQ. (he did this game one also, and said i had been shuffling for 2 1/2 minutes, and the judge hadnt even said we could start playing.) This game i am happy to smash face even if i cant use sink into takenuma (at this point i really want to own someone with it, and since i never cast one, im still waiting for that to happen) I remember casting multiple distresses, and had to leave a final judgement in his hand since he had meishin the mind cage, luckily my guys are fat and i had no trouble recovering from the final judgement and proceeded to smash his face to a juicy pulp with random guys.

Round 5 vs. the mirror (there was lots of mba and almost no time of need or ww)

This is one of the guys i went to wendy's with earlier and we actually tested between rounds, and it seems we are pretty even preboard. It was unforunate we had to play, but it has to happen sometimes.

game one i get manascrewed off of a good 2 land hand after a mulligan and wonder why that seems to happen every time i play the mirror. the worst part was that i died with a yukora and 2 mark of the oni in my hand.

Since he is playing less small guys i dont side in the laughters here (should i have brought in cranials?, it is funny because if i had a sink this game it would've sealed the game turn 4, and i was actually compelled to bring them in, but knew it was the wrong choice.) this match made me realize just how much i wish i had kiku's shadow in the side instead of hirobi's whisper.

Second game i mulligan to 5 and think i am about to get my third loss, luckily it is my opponents turn to get stuck on 2, but he has a bit more game on 2 land than I do since he plays sickening shoal. His 2 shoals didnt matter though, as i just kept dropping threats and that was that.

Game three (my first game three all day) is the fairest game of the match, but he ended up drawing 8 lands to my 5 and one of mine was tomb of urami, so we basically did 1 for one trades and then he drew lands and i drew double oni slave and yukora. I have to say this entire match was in the luck of the cards, and it ended up favoring me, im happy i won, but dont feel like i actually BEAT my opponent.

Round 6 vs......Gifts.....oh wait he has 3 wins a loss and a DRAW, hes obviosly playing gifts.

Game one i think it is the mirror again, but on turn 4 he plays a tendo and removes the counter for tribe-elder, and i realize he is just playing gifts and kept a risky hand that bit him in the butt. at that point he is already at 11 and i attack for like 8 more (slave hand and bleeder i think) he is forced to gifts for 3 green sources and a wear away when i play jitte, and i give him forest and tendo. the mana is too late and he is unable to stabilize and im thinking im one game win from top 8, which is a guaranteed 1/2 box.

Game 2 i side in sinks and extractions, for manriki, mark, a hand, and a bleeder (wouldve taken out another hand, but i wanted to be able to curve out into a sink with board advantage) This game i curve out well and topdeck some distresses to go with my disruptionless hand (it was 4 land, slave, marauder and yukora) i never got to play a sink, but i still won. the funniest thing about this game is that his hana kami beat me down for 3 before being sacced to my marauder.

I try not to think about tie breakers and just wait for everyone to finish, i am thinking im going to get 7th seed with my friend getting in right behind me. it turns out there were 7 people with 13 points or more, and only one 4-2 made it, my friend came in ninth and i got 10th, which gets us diddly squat in prizes even though the entry fee was $25. (35 players remember?)

I have to say that distress was my MVP for the day, but manriki gusari never did much, most of the matches it was useful in i just got manascrewed (rounds 1 and 3) or my opponent got an active one first (because i was manascrewed) I think i want a 24th land since my curve is a little higher than usual, and think i will cut a hand for another tomb, shizo is good, but there was never a situation all day where it would've been good, and the 3 games i drew urami it won for me. (2 of those games weren't for match.) I never got to use tha marks or sinks, but no that they would have been very good in the matches i had them in. I think i will actually cut an extraction for the 4th sink, since it seems like it should break control decks in half, since the control decks in this format arent like most in that they are down to 4 cards in hand by turn 5 most of the time. I will try to do some testing this week for the PTQ on saturday and will post my list as i change it, I will probably have a list i am pretty happy with by wednesday, since my local store is having a tourney with a pretty big prize then, and i will get in a lot of testing between rounds (NOTE: the wednesday tourney is draft so i will just have some general opinions on the deck, and not a real match report)

I would definitely suggest shoals maindeck, and some other removal sideboard, but i would not suggest hirobi's whisper, at least not in my mba heavy metagame. I also think 4 Distress is a must as it can single handedly win against white control, and is at least decent in every other matchup except maybe WW.

..................(scrolls to top of post).....................wow...........thats a lot of writing........sorry if anyone read all that and didnt get anything out of it, hopefully it will be of some use to you.

im pretty sure that the hand is mainly for beating white weenie. It is also a good creature on its own, and even though it cant normally pick up an o-naginata, it helps the curve of this deck, there is no other creature that has 3 power for 2 mana except for raving-oni slave and we already play him.

  • posted a message on Where do we go when we die?
On the afterlife issue, at this point in my life i dont know exactly what i believe. Anytime before the begining of this past schoolyear i would have said that i believe in god, but this past september i started rethinking everything i know. I realized that a lot of the things i believed in i had no reason to believe in them. Now i am begining to choose what i believe in by thinking out my own theories and testing them as rigidly as possible and i now see that i do not no whether i truly believe in the afterlife or not, for all i know there may be a soul inside me, and i think it is possible that many different things may be able to happen once you die.

But since i am only 16 and dont plan on dying anytime soon, I am willing to say for the time being that if i cant know whether there is an afterlife or not, I should just make this one the best it can be, and if i dont know my purpose in life, I should make sure to lead the most purposeful life I can. When you dont no the answer to a question, find the loophole that makes the answer as unimportant as possible and go with it, it just so happens that those loopholes lead to a happy life(theoretically)........or was that on purpose, I guess i cant know, cause it wouldnt have been my accident now would it?

well you can just use it on a fattie of your opponents and have it be several merfolk looter activations with a delayed discard, and it would prevent all the damage too. the card is very flexible, and if it was the chosen mechanic, the card would most likely be green, or possibly black, white, or some combination of the three.

I dont kow if any of you guys actually LOOKED at the invitational decklists, but this decklist is not just a sub par take on tim atens 3-0 rat deck it is actually a verry VERY similar and on par build of tsuyoshi fujita's decklist, which i also thought was jank when i saw it. but after seeing that he went 2-1 in a field of 16 of the worlds best players with a very similar build, and additionally after reading this little tournament report, i believe i may have to actually test the deck myself.

For the record i believe tsuyoshi maindecked the annuls t stop vedalken shackles and damping matrix, both of which own this deck, and since with saviors artifacts become only more of a problem so the inclusion of 4 annuls (or at least 3) seems almost essential.

just for reference i will post fujita's exact decklist here, but keep in mind it is for a pre-saviors format:

    Main Deck
    60 cards Sideboard10 Island
    4 Salt Marsh
    6 Swamp
    2 Waterveil Cavern
    22 land

    4 Chittering Rats
    4 Ravenous Rats
    2 Thought Courier
    3 Trinket Mage
    4 Vedalken Mastermind
    17 creatures

    4 AEther Spellbomb
    4 AEther Vial
    4 Annul
    1 Crystal Shard
    2 Echoing Truth
    3 Mana Leak
    2 Rend Flesh
    1 Sensei's Divining Top
    21 other spells

    Sideboard
    4 Carry Away
    2 Nekrataal
    4 Steal Artifact
    1 Steel Wall
    4 Terror
    15 sideboard cards

  • posted a message on what deck will u be playing at regonals?
Just to make sure i dont get this thread off topic, i dont know what i will be playing for regionals, im kind of caught up in the end pf the year rush for school, but i will probably have a good idea by the end of this weekend, their are just so many ideas going around in my head right now, my only worry is if i will be able to make a good concentrated deck on time or not.

but as for the person who just posted the "infernal kirin deck" i hope that you realize the kirins only trigger off of Spirit or Arcane spells, which means you wont be triggering him much, if at all in your build. RTFC!

there are definitely going to be rogue decks at regionals, and im gueessing some of them will be quite powerful for the format (for the format being the key words)

if you want to see some of the rogue decks that will be tried out at regionals, then i would suggest looking at the standard decks for the magic invitational. there are 3-4 decks there that i have never seen, incuding one with vedalken mastermind, and that deck went undefeated.

Well i couldnt have gone to the prerelease today, for 2 reasons, first of all, the saturday prerelease is about a 3 hour drive away, and since i dont have a license thats 2 round trips for whoever is driving me, which means 12 hours of driving. secondly, we have a leaky roof and i have to replace the shingles on our house today.

luckily for me, the sunday prerelease is only 40 minutes away, and i should be there. GOGO SAVIORS!!

we got the blue epic, in this threads first post nonetheless.

I'd say today was a good day everybody. now that we pretty much the whole spoiler, someone will make an apprentice patch and we will be able to find out exactly what the set seems like for the prerelease, as i said before, im almost sad that we got the entire spoiler, as it would be interesting to get a big surprise at the prere, but not finding out early when you could have all along is a bit stupid, to give yourself a disadvantage just for a little surprise.

now that we have the whole set i can work on block decks YAAY, i <3 block constructed!! YAY

    oh yeah and GOGO saviors!!

wow, this card is something i new they were going to make, and in a way it doesnt surprise me at all, but surprises me a lot at the same time. i really like this and think it will definitely be played in block at least a little, and limited quite often.

I for one think we all need to give a big shout out to RATHI, GOGGO RATHI, and saviors.

the set seemed to turn out really good for limited but not so good for constructed, thats ok though, because once mirrodin rotates out, we'll just have a strangely underpowered type 2 thats all, overall im just happy theres so many cards that i found on my little computer screen when i got home.

am i the only one who thinks that this could just be best sided in against green decks, so on turn 3-4 you can wipe out the 3-4 lands you have, and the 5-6 lands they have? that seems like a crippling card in that situation. and its not completely useless at other times either, i can definitely see this card getting played.
