I'm always curious why people assume that reprinting Cancel somehow means that Wizards considers it the premier counterspell and a reversal of stuff like Disallow when they've already shown they'll print Flatten, Grasp of Darkness, and Throttle in consecutive sets for differing reasons. Cancel gets printed for limited, not to specifically rub your face in them not printing more powerful counterspells, because that's the job of other cards in the standard enviroment.
I reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally wish this hit Walkers. Oh well.
The red 2 drops in the set are the most interesting to me, I may (will) build a janky Modern deck out of Red 2 drops.
At least it can deal it's damage to them.
True enough.
To me, in any format where Eidolon exists, this is just Eidolon #5-#8, if you are looking for that effect. I cannot imagine ever replacing the greatest Modern Burn creature of all time, with this, but the flavour text is simply too pure to ignore.
Are you certain that's how it works? I'm pretty sure that the Pyroclasm damage would be prevented by protection from red and that you would not get to put any -1/-1 counters on that creature. Anyway, if you face many creatures with protection from red, you could always use Kozilek's return instead of Pyroclasm.
We'd need a judge to be sure, but if I read this right Soul-Scar's ability is a replacement-effect to the damage, basicly turning sweepers into Black Sun's Zenith. I remember this discussion was brought up in Scars standard with Mirran Crusader facing the zenith, and in conclusion he dies.
Anyway I'm on spellbombs so pro-red ain't an issue to me, but it would be an interesting alternative. Not a big fan of Kozilek's.
Good question. I feel like the wording on Soul-Scar in relation to protection on something like a Kor Firewalker wont work because the damage that Soul-Scar would replace is never happening. Red cards cannot damage a creature with protection from Red unless we cast an Unstable Footing or the new Aftermath card Insult//Injury beforehand. Black Sun's Zenith affecting Mirran Crusader works because BSZ is neither targeting nor damaging the Crusader.
If this card ends up working vs. Pro-Red then HELL YEAH! But I don't think it does.
What do you think about Soul-Scar Mage ? I really like it.
It seems better for Skred Red even more than for Burn to me since Burn is going face and we are casting efficient sweepers. Also our Mind Stones and Relics (and even our planeswalkers) are incidentally triggering Prowess for a not that unlikely swing for three on turn two. I have always dreamed of Chandra's Phoenix losing it's "Instant or Sorcery" clause and this card is kinda sorta doing that for Red.
But... BUT... my narrative
RR is not easy to pay in a multi-color deck.
Honestly this even works in mono-color decks like Red with Wildfire using artifacts to ramp.
At least it can deal it's damage to them.
It's Skred Red that struggles vs Leyline, not Burn.
This bypasses Leyline of Sanctity, doesn't trigger off of our Scrying Sheets and Mind Stones, redirects damage to planeswalkers, and the lifelink from Batterskull should be a nice touch.
