Boom / Bust would actually be a too powerful addition to Standard. "Destroy target land" for 1R when playing with fetchlands (Target your fetchland and an opposing land, in response crack the fetch) in Jund colors would make half the metagame even more powerful. Plus, cascaded into, you can play it because of Booms cmc, but you may choose to play the Bust half. Quite busted, don't you think? Wink

Uh yah, that's why I didn't suggest the actual split card, just a new, bust type spell.

Maybe a new Bust. I don't see 'geddon effects costing less than 5, and 6 is more likely.

    Pools of endless knowledge

    Land
:symtap:~ adds 1 to your mana pool
Tap a land : you lose 2 life and draw a card

Who is clever enough to trade life for wisdom?

    and,

You can't gain life for the rest of the game to make it less abusable? ;o

    Oh hello Necropotence 2.0.

It would probably have to be a sacrifice effect if we ever get a land that draws a card again (or symmetric, like the land from Kamigawa block). Or an ETB ability, definitely not a repeatable effect, though, no matter how bad the drawback seems.

I would think that coding the double cycle would be easier than memory issues in paper tournaments. I really don't think the double cycle is a good example of something that is difficult to do online yet easy in paper.

This thread has absolutely convinced me to never, ever, ever get a Mac..... Facepalm

Can I ask the mac users a question? Are you not able to play MtGO? I'm very curious.

... You know you can run windows on a mac now right? This thread is really only relevant for people still running 3-4 year old (or older) macs, specifically, macs that use the PPC processor rather than intel processors. Or people who don't want to shell out $300 for windows, I suppose.

MtGO is not written for OSX either, but again, it will run under Windows on any modern mac.

Personally, I have LackeyCCG although I haven't tried using it online, just as a deckbuilder/solo tester so far.

I'm not sure what is up with all the SCG bashing--people claiming that they have outrageous prices, etc.

Someone recommended http://magic.tcgplayer.com/db/search_result.asp?Set_Name=Zendikar as a price guide--however, comparing prices on that site with SCG shows that SCG is in the low to medium category on all of the money cards in ZEN.

Someone else mentioned findmagiccards.com. I used to use that site frequently, but found that the prices there vary from right on the money to ridiculously low and ridiculously high.

Disclaimer--I do not work for SCG, nor do I even buy from SCG. I just happen to find *most* of their pricing fairly reasonable.

Their presale prices tend to be anywhere from very good to amazingly good. However, once a set is released, they tend to have just about the highest prices for any reasonably popular card.

Probably already mentioned, but I would LOVE a complete limited-based pro tour. My understanding is that some PT events have limited "days", but typically are followed by an extended/standard T8, etc. If I'm wrong, slap me, but a purely limited PT would actually encourage me to get involved, as my limited skills are much better than my constructed ones. :/

    Thoughts?

This is the first year in a really long time (since the PT began, maybe, but I don't think so) where they have not had a limited Pro Tour. The reason is that they cut a Pro Tour, so to accommodate all of the formats they wanted to, they had to make Pro Tours constructed/limited hybrids. In the past Pro Tours were always single formate events. It was Worlds that was always the big multi-format event.

There's nothing unclear about it, it doesn't tell you to move the card, so it stays in the library and you shuffle it.

  • posted a message on When bitterblossem was spoiled, what were the initial reactions?
I was making a mono-black control deck at the time and thought it was perfect for stalling into the late game, plus a win condition. It actually worked very well. To be honest I didn't think of it in context of Faeries, I was still quite a casual player back then. I picked them up for $7 a piece at GP: Vancouver (which was extended). At the time I felt they would hit 10-12 at most, really. There was definitely a lot of debate, at least on MTGSalvation, as to its playability.

I don't really remember Mistbind Clique at all, I think a lot of players immediately dismissed anything with champion, though, at first. I think it was undervalued initially, at least among my FNM group.

I think there solid and inventive.
Maelstrom pulse i'm getting a playset of... jund just got so much more fun. Anti-broodmate. What i would give for it to have been an instant. Then it would be a staple

Not actually anti-Broodmate unfortunately. The token's name is just "Dragon." Nonetheless, an awesome spell :).

I cant really think of a way to cheat his shuffle effect away. otherwise itd be an awesome card.

Well, bounce would work, but really, the way to think of this is as a 7 damage Beacon of Destruction. I think it has potential, but it will be much better once you can cast it precombat without fear of Cryptic Command completely ruining you (as in, it will be much better after the rotation this fall).

No its uploaded on Gatherer the Monday after the prerelease... unless somebody at Wizards screws up and posts it up on Friday, which while it has happened before is not the norm.

I don't know about gatherer, but we definitely get the whole set spoiled the Friday before.

  • posted a message on DCI ratings
    Quote from silence_dais
If I recall the way it works out, is that there is certain levels that you earn every time you enter a tournament....

Well the way ratings work is that whenever you play a match, your rating gets adjusted based on the result. You gain points for a win, lose points for a loss, and for a draw whoever has the higher rating loses a little bit, and whoever has a lower rating gains a bit. The amount of points lost and gained depends on both players' ratings before the match, and on the K-level of the event. FNMs are 8K (ratings changes are really small), other normal sanctioned tournaments are 16K, and bigger tournaments can be 24K or 32K, and I think some are even 48K, not sure though (maybe Worlds?). Anyway, the basic idea is that if you beat a player who has a much higher rating than you, you gain a lot of points, if you lose to someone who has a much higher rating than you, you only lose a few points. Finally, the amount of points you gain/lose are more the more competitive the tournament is.

As for what that means, for PTQs and Regionals ratings don't matter (they don't help or hinder you in any way). However, if you are in the top X (where x depends on the country) rated players in your country, you get a free invite to Nationals, or a free invite to Worlds, even.

Beyond that, you can get ratings-based byes at Grand Prixs (1800+ is one bye, 1900+ 2, 2000+ 3), and you can be invited to Pro Tours based on rating as well, I think it's 2100 for that. You use the rating that is of the same format as the event (if it's a limited Grand Prix, look at your limited rating).

EDIT: Pro tour ratings invites are based on being in the top 100 ratings in the world, not a specific ratings cut off as it turns out.

There's a new total rating as well, and you can get the same perks as with the specific ratings there, except that you need 50 more points for each perk to get them based on that.

    Hope that helps.
