Honestly this effect is really strong. If anyone here’s ever played hearthstone, defile was a marquee card for a reason, and in cube in most boardstates there is a 1/1 on the board, so it’s almost wcs is massacre wurm. I’m imagining this is going to avg case of at least -3/-3 to nonher board.
Grafted wargear loves this set. I think I need to look at my power buffing for a couple cards in this set. This is good if alone but insane if equipped or buffed.
I’d say definitely. My favorite card I the set so far. Even if you get one trigger off it’s worth. Also you’re ignoring the ability to play higher cmc spells(which id imagine happening more often than him missing any target) grafter wargear is my favorite equipment for a reason.
I feel like weirdly enough the power of this card comes from his -2, I can see situations where an artifact in your sideboard just shuts down opponents decks, but is too narrow to make the final forty. Both his other abilities can also be amazing don’t get me wrong, but they can also do absolutely nothing, which isn’t a great place to be.
Black Aggro has seen quite a boost this block with spawn of mayhem, gutterbones and doom whispererer. In my powered environment one drop discard is super important, but I’ve thought about cutting it before, because it’s never valued as much by drafters I meet at LGSes and regularly gets sideboarded, so I can understand the sentiment.
I’m super happy with dovin baan and the slimelord. this block has been great for my cube, as well as surprisingly light on the wallet for how Mythic rare and rare dense this sets adds were.
hmmm. I guess I was not evaluating it as being weak, but more like a low floor, high ceiling card, casting this for 3, and the next turn casting wheel of fortune to refill the hand gives you a 3 mana 7/7 double strike. even at 5 mana 2/2 pass turn, untap, draw, cast a card to draw 2 now has a 4/4 double strike, basically becomes a card that can end board stalls fairly easily.
I like the design, it’s neat, but for cube, even your best case scenario is weak. Compare your card to kalonian hydra, the poster child for big dumb stat monster with no protection but will end the game. They both end the game at about the same speed, but for a big dumb monster trample >doublestrike. Kalonian hydra does it all by itself, yours requires help from drawspells. Imagine top decking this(sad day). I’d honestly just remove an x from the cost. That would make it compete in my 360 at least.
I thought this was a cool idea, not sure how to word it correctly etc, but hopefully you get the idea.
Flaming Avatar
Cost: XXR
As you Cast Flaming Avatar, X = the number of cards in your hand.
Power and Toughness = X/X (the number of cards in your hand)
Double Strike
It’s a cool idea but super weak. With a downside of having to pay whatever is in your hand as a cost it should be XR at most. - 3 drop 1/1 or a 5 drop 2/2 with double strike are both awful. Then you at least have the upside of drawspells making it super good. As is if you don’t cheat it into play it’s weak, and if you do you should have cheated something way stronger.
So I made a dragon ball themed cube a while back and it’s an absolute blast
One mechanic I loved was
Zenkai boost(whenever this creature blocks or becomes blocked put X +1/+1 counters on it, where x is it’s power at end of turn)
So for example I had
Creature R
Zenkai boost
2/1
Which is almost functionally a vanilla(aka I think printable) but can be absolutely insane given the right circumstance, equipment combat tricks etc)
And (a weak card in the set)
Creature 5WW
Vigilance, indestructible, flying
Zenkai boost
3/7
And that emblem wouldn’t see print, at the very least it would have some call to the grave type clause where if someone couldn’t sac the emblem would break.
I mostly meant I expect the spectactle to be great, but when I can’t hit spectacle on curve, I really want a 5/5 flying trampler, otherwise why not just run abyssal persecutor.
I’m hoping for a promo. Really not a fan of the art. Depending on how often both abilities work out this could be an all star or something that gets cut after a few updates. I’m imagining both will trigger rather frequently. (The +1/+1, and the spectacle cost I mean
The body is really good, the effect is really good in a rakdos deck. Grixis midrange/control is an archetype that would love this card as well as rakdos aggro. I just feel like this is a rakdos card.
I might be in the minority here, but this walker reminds me of jace beleren, who I still enjoy cubing with. Good -1, a plus one to restore loyalty to when low, and possibly in mistake just +1 for 4 and get an ult out of it? I think this is a sum of the parts card leaning on the -1, and I’ll be glad to test it out.
Heck -1 three times with the threat of +6ing is a good card.
The flexibiliy of magma quake is extremely useful and i know I’ve used similar cards with x = 5+ so it can also be more impactful than hour. Earthquake is basically my signature card when we draft my cube.
It works specifically with become immense because of the power boost if the previous post is what you are replying to.
Also, I really feel like this is a card that needs testing, he may suck, he may be great, but I can’t determine that without playing this card.
