I think the issue of Leyline has been put to rest, at least for me it has. Firstly, its just not played that much. Even if your opponent is running it, they may have to mulligan for which is just as good as if we had emptied their hand. Even in the worst case scenario we have enough option main and side to overcome it.

Agreed. The only other card I can think of is Delirium Skeins and, like the other three, it isn't exactly "tech".

I'm not really sure if there are any viable additions/changes to what's already in use until the next block or possibly M14 at the earliest.

My understanding is that the problem with Leyline of Sanctity is that it neutralises a large portion of your disruption (Thoughtseize, Raven's Crime, Inquisition of Kozilek), not your victory conditions.

Neither The Rack nor Shrieking Affliction actually target anything, so Leyline doesn't do anything against them.

That is correct. The only non-targeted discard additions That come to mind (not listed in prior post or core deck cards) would be additional Necrogen Mists or Gibbering Descent. Blood Tithe and Exsanguinate would just be ways to hit your opponent if/when targetted discard is no longer an option. Temporal Extortion has a similar effect.

I din't really think any of these are good choices as they (a) don't keep to the fundamental concept of his deck of controlling your opponent's hand, making effective kills with The Rack and Shriekng Affliction; and (b) don't fit into the existent mana curve. I would opt for Ratchet Bomb and Extirpate/Surgical Extraction instead. It's effective against more deck types and fits the curve without disrupting the way the deck runs.

I think the record speaks for itself for the mono black version, but "dies to Leyline of Sanctity" has been a repeated concern of some on this thread, so I thought I'd throw those out there as some possible means of circumventing that issue to those who felt they needed more options to playtest.

For those still stressing over Leyline of Sanctity in the mono black version, what about Blood Tithe or Exsanguinate in the side? Neither targets, so both get around it while Liliana of the Veil, Necrogen Mists, and Smallpox all do their thing.

I'm not a huge fan of either card as they hose the curve, but it does get around it. It's a shame there's no good Extort option for black. A 2 CMC enchantment like Blind Obedience would go a long way to getting around Leyline n this deck.

I hate to be hitting the board with another rules question within the first day of signing on, but I'm really scratching my head on this one.

Here's the set-up. I have a Pyromancer Ascension with 1 quest counter in play, a Cinder Pyromancer on the board, 1 Lightning Bolt in my graveyard, and 2 Lightning Bolts in my hand. I shoot with the Cinder Pyromancer, then cast one of the Lightning Bolts, untapping the Pyromancer and putting a 2nd quest counter on Pyromancer Ascension. I then shoot with the Pyromancer again, and cast the second Lightning Bolt in my hand.

    Here's where it gets fugly.

Casting the 2nd Lightning Bolt causes two things to trigger. The first is the Pyromancer, which untaps. The second is the Pyromancer Ascension, which allows me to put a copy of the Lightning Bolt on the stack.

    So here's my question.

Is there a way to use the Cinder Pyromancer in conjunction with Pyromancer Ascension so that I can untap him twice when I cast the 2nd Lightning Bolt from my hand? Can I use Pyromancer Ascension's copying ability to untap the Cinder Pyromancer multiple times whenever I cast an instant or sorcery?

That's what I was afraid of, but I thought I'd double check before shelling out for the Zendikar fetch lands.

    Thanks for the heads up!

Hello everyone, my username is Chalupacabra and I've recently started playing the game again. I played and worked as a DCI judge back around Tempest, Urza, Masques, and Invasion Blocks, but quit shortly thereafter. With the advent of the XBL game, I've gotten interested in the tabletop game again and started back up with M2010. Facepalm

As a former judge, my understanding of the core rules is pretty solid, even with the 2010 revisions, but there's been a number of expansions in the intervening time, so there's a lot of new things I'm having to adjust to as a player. I used to play somewhat competitively, but I'm more interested in the game as a casual excursion nowadays.

Anyway, I'll answer what I can and try not to ask anything too obvious.

    Nice to meet you all!

Please be gentle, it's my first post.

I was looking to put together a new extended deck and I was considering playing around with landfall and some of the fetch options. I was going to use the Panorama fetch lands from Alara with the "Shock" dual lands from Ravnica when I noticed in the text for the Panoramas that they specifically state "basic" swamp, forest, island, mountain, plains. For example, Grixis Panorama:

"1, Tap, Sacrifice Grixis Panorama: Search your library for a basic Island, Swamp, or Mountain card and put it onto the battlefield tapped. Then shuffle your library."

Does this mean that the only fetch lands that can fetch the shock lands and other basic-typed lands such as Moonring Island are the new Zendikar fetch lands?
