that you R_E for the info. please pass along a thank you to your source for providing us with the information / image that has sparked such a lively debate.
for my part of the debate:
i do a fair amountof photoshoppery. i can see the issues that many of you are concerned about. try to keep this in mind, though... in modern advertising the actual product is very rarely ever photographed. the reason is that the gloss that is appealing to the human eye DOES NOT photograph well. this goes for food, food packaging, toys, jewelry, and a host of other products.
i'll go with real.
because the concerns that have been raised are explainable within the practices of the Advertising world...
this thread was supposed to be an organized place to demonstrate the spirit of community and togetherness that we have at Salvation. it was supposed to be a place where wecould show our thanks for the information that was given to us, and a forum where we could extend our collective apologies for actions taken by some of our members.
but it is morphing into ANOTHER setting that will end up offending our "Source"...
can we get the posts that are out of "spirit" with the original thread removed before they do more harm to our community and overall reputation?
essentially my thought is that if they are posting here for any reason OTHER than to say thanks and we're sorry then they are flame-baiting, trolling for an arguement... however you want to describe it... it'snot helpful.
let me just say that i am thrilled that people are stepping forward to protect the reputation that MTGSalvation has with the online Magic community.
as for the person who was kind enough to provide information regarding Ravnica... all that i can say is thanks. it's pretty remarkable that we would get information on a set this early. it shows that you had a pretty high degree of trust in R_E and i am truly sorry if any of the members of our community here have caused you to doubt the decision that you made when you approached R_E.
MODS: if we get people who post on this thread in a way that is...
shall we say, off topic...
can we make sure that those posts don't stay around? it defeats the purpose of the thread and it just harms Salvation as a whole...
my vote for the article on cheating has to do with the conversations that i have been having with people who don't visit the site...
i've been talking about the cheating article... it's made me think about how i personally pay attention to details when i'm playing and what the consequences are...
it was an excellent article, and i'm glad to give it my vote...
i can not say this was the best article i have read on the match up of these decks... i can say that it is the only one that featured a "conversation" between a hippy and a "harvard guy" but i'm not sure that's a good thing...
and... just a little aside from my side of the deckbuilding table...
ahhhhh.... RAV gets the lands... the set has pretty much everybody tittering and then they drop the word that we're going to get juicy new "dual" style lands...
It would make Land Tax practically obsolete then if they made a card identical to yours Cann. But then again it might make Land Tax more valuable considering the amount of land it can fetch for literally no cost. It might not hurt to attempt to design a card like that...
'buster
you know what would be obscene with the land that i was talking about?
but that being said...i do think that a land that can search out lands for a few turns in a row can be shaped into a really USEFULL (read as: not over powered or broken) card that could help to redefine the mana problems in the game. what if it sac'd oce you had three or more lands in play?
1st turn play the "search land", search out a Swamp.
2nd turn you play the swamp... tap the "search land" and grab an island.
3rd turn... once you play that island the "search land" goes away. but you have a mana base to work from...
make them uncommon, and make a rare that doesn't go POP until you have 5 lands out.
i would also be very sure not to make it tap for mana.
which means our new friend the Pithing Needle will be able to unleash a little hate...
This is so broken it is not even funny. There will be decks that can use this to draw literally dozens of cards. A 0 cost uncounterable card that draws 2 cards would be broken. Throw this in a mono green elf deck and draw an extra land each turn. I do not think so.
oh.... i know it'd be broken. but it would address one of the major complaints that people have with magic... mana screw.
wizards has done a couple of things to help deal with mana screw (cycling, scrye, top...) but it still remains a problem.
this card would create the opposite problem. it would speed up the game way too much. when you can ALWAYS hit your land drop EVERY turn it'dget a little silly. it would kill LD decks (as if they are viable at all...)...
EDIT: it would also be quite nasty with the new "Wisdom" thing they have goingon in Saviors... that'd get nasty pretty quickly...
Watery Grave
land
T: search your library for either a swamp or an island. reveal that card, and put it in your hand. if you control 5 or more lands sacrifice Watery Grave.
have one for each of the friendly color combinations...
so there's the comments from ed... not the nicest guy in the world, by the way... i've met him. a guy i knew in college modeled for a Jyhad card that ed did for the original Jyhad set. he (ed) always seemed like the guy who wanted you to know how talented he was,so he'd point it out for you in case you missed it... the buses he painter for the rhode island public transit authority were nice though... very colorful.
i don't think it sounds like he got a fair shake. i also think it sounds like HE made the situation worse for himself. i do agree that the art in MTG is changing and that ed's art really isn't in line with many of the new artist styles that they seem to be using.
i really do like much of the new art. i think the CHK block is the most visually appealing block i have ever seen. it is very very good art overall. (go ahead... list the dogs in the bunch, and then i'll have to list the good ones and then we can go back and forth and it'll be tons of fun...")
ed beard jr... i want to thank you for a card or two, maybe ahsnods coupon. i do like that one... good luck with your future endeavors.
eh... if it makes you feel any better i couldn't get the time off from the casino i work at... so i'm having to sit this one out (as i did for Betrayers). i'm REALLY hoping to be able to make Ravnica. the prerelease for the large sets are always the coolest.
less chance that scrubs are switching out cards...
10 Reasons why Kamigawa block is nice for constructed:
10) Kokusho, the Evening Star
9) Meloku, the Clouded Mirror
8) Hokori, Dust Drinker
7) Sensei's Divining Top
6) Thoughts of Ruin
5) Samurai of the Pale Curtain
4) Ideas Unbound
3) Pithing Needle
2) Sakura-Tribe Elder
1) Cranial Extraction
i hope those weren't in order... Pithing Needle is going to make an impact in every format out there... mark my words... you open a foil pithing needle you just hit a nice fat payday.

i love the coke bottle in the background. i always thought that was funny.
as for the card...
meh... not a huge morph fan so this card really doesn't do much for me... i do like the feel that the card has, but the mechanic holds it back for me.

and... just a little aside from my side of the deckbuilding table...
i really like the synergy with Sachi, Daughter of Seshiro... use it with the Eternal Witness, the Troll Ascetic, and the Sakura-Tribe Elder and you have a nice acceleration base to get some green fatties out and start stomping a mudhole in everybody.
but maybe that's just me...

i'm right there with you on that one... Puddnhead is one of my fave new artists for the game...
he has a good gothic style that really appeals to me.
