Yep wouldn't be too shocked if we saw atleast one more before the mothership lands.

I would hope we get a handful of spoilers before mothership gets into the nitty gritty.
We should be getting spoilers almost constantly, something like this:
    Set spoilers (1 week)
    M-Files for set (1 week)
Standard/Modern talk (1-2 weeks), with more spoilers on the off week.

Stuff like Commander Anthologies should be full spoiled well in advance, as I don't see much of a niche for buyouts here.

It's a draft set so they can't overload the power level. I think we'll see Shock over Bolt, Counterspell will likely be there but we can see from a reprint like Murder (meh?) that we probably won't see the Leylines or other needed reprints. I hope to see Scapeshift in there, at the very least and maybe even Rishadan Port.
My faith in Wizards is flagging in these products though, so I expect a small number of needed reprints with some decent downgrades to Common for Pauper and some good favourites.

Overall, I don't think that Gavin, Mark and the others really know what they want from these sets. Players want reprints and understand the need for filler, but moving away from "Need" to "Theme" is really "meh". I hope they get Masters 25 right, but it will take a series of played, iconic cards spoiled to convince me.

Im more concerned with BBE rising up again, it was the card in Jund that I hated most during the early deck development... having a lock get destroyed by BBE cascading into Decay was about as sad as an upside down turtle...

I heavily agree. BBE and cascade will be this the current lantern’s demise. I have a feeling surgical extraction and welding jar will make bigger returns mb just to survive.

Any other suggestions about unboning ourselves?

Ah never mind. Spell played from Exile. In this case Canonist is probably a lot better, or even something weird like Uba Mask that forces them into playing one spell a turn, essentially. Slant

Slightly off-topic: I would like to take a moment to thank user Tyrannosaursstomp for the well reasoned, essay-length post. Especially for someone with a grand total of 4 posts on this forum (as of my reading his post), it's really encouraging to see how much thought they put into this discussion. I think this kind of intelligent discourse promotes a healthy community, and I will be more likely to stick around here the more posts of this kind I see. +1

This, That was a very well-articulated post and he made the great point that Modern staples like Tarn should be reprinted fairly regularly to promote churn of Modern player base. Some leave, some enter and hopefully more stay.

    ... and Sensei's Diving Top.

Every time someone says this, I imagine playing lantern against an active SDT and my brain starts to hurt.

    This.
As a Lantern player i sure as hell do NOT want SDT to be back. It would kill the mill plan completely, Top would just draw a card in response to the Needle, or get an answer to Needle. Bad bad bad bad bad! Jace is fine though. Grin

I've never seen Tez as a pseudo-attacker. He almost always impulses for an artifact to add to your lock or drains your opponent for a ton.
And JTMS is testable. You either filter away excess stuff to mill away via Pyxis or Bell or you Fateseal down their stuff you might not want in the graveyard, and so on. If JTMS stays alive for 5 turns you've won (not impossible with Bridge out) and a comparable situation would require 3-4 mill rocks and a self-aware opponent.

Yeah I think at most 1 Jace. And you can use Lantern to shuffle if pressed. This is a fine, sweet, fair addition to the deck and format.
I cannot wait to add mine to the deck. Smile

    Mind blown....

    Or did you mean...sculpted? Wink

Overjoyed by Jace joining us. It's more than fair in a format this fast and I will certainly field a one of in Lantern.
Bloodbraid...I'm more than annoyed with, it will create a lot of tension with the free castings but that is the price you pay for Jace in the wild, so be it.
(Also, selfishly, glad I have my copies of Jace.)

Look for Jace after 2/19 in the lantern control deck nearest you!

    Have fun!

I will be running it as a one of. It's really a bad Lantern with the Fateseal ability, but it's a better Codex Shredder activation since it permanently rids us of a problem card.
Bloodbraid Elf is quite quarrelsome though. Not looking forward to free Abrupt Decay or Ancient Grudge. Truly unfair. Frown

A friend of mine, Robert, went 7-3 with his UW build in Toronto. His third loss was to Elves on day two and he felt a lot of the matches were swingy and draw depedent, especially his final loss. Reiteration that the decision trees are vital as well, as small errors can catch up to you. Looks fun that UW is good again.

Vexing Devil topdeck with opponent at 1 dropped Devil's MTGO price from 1.84 to 1.49 Laugh

I cringed whenever I saw that played. It is such a high variance card I'd almost rather have any other burn spell or aggressive creature instead.
It was cool seeing Jon Top 4 though, cool guy to see on the circuit again.

Etched Monstrosity would not be great, but they could have a Sunburst subtheme in there, with Clearwater Goblet, Engineered Explosives, Etched Oracle and so on. Wouldn't be the most horrible thing unless they put Solarion at mythic or something. Laughing

As far as confirmed reprints I'm not exactly impressed, though. So far we got Phyrexian Obliterator, which is an okay card that has some demand behind it, Jace, The Mind Sculptor, which is probably the big "face" card of the set just like he was in eternal masters, and Azusa, Lost but Seeking, that only holds her price tag due to lack of printings.

WoTC can't just throw expensive cards in the set. They have to base their inclusions on both price and how much play the cards see. If they don't do this we will end up with another Iconic Masters or Eternal Masters. We already saw what happened when Horizon Canopy got reprinted and at this point it seems obvious WoTC has no idea what cards actually have demand and not just scarcity pumping the price. It's like they got people with zero knowledge of the game and what gets played making the financial decisions on sets.

This is kinda scary, but feels correct. I mean, no brainer printing would be the Urzatron, which still see play in Modern and casual play. YOu likely cannot reprint Strip Mine (especially if Crucible gets a reprint), but you can print Triskelion. Of course all the rares can't have $ value, but they should definitely use this occasion to pump down prices on some cards that have printing-related scarcity. Downgrade some crap rares/uncommons to Common for the Pauper crowd and you'll be more than good to go.

As a little aside though, it is kind of annoying that we got the booster art, Obliterator and...nothing. I'd have appreciated a card per week until spoilers start in earnest, instead of just a one card tease then radio silence. Spoiling cards is something they should have down pat by now, but they are still askew here.

Lantern matches should not be generally going to time.
Case where opponent refuses to concede unless you "produce a kill", in which you need to loop spellbomb or explain the opponent cannot succeed because you are selecting draws.
Case where the player (such as myself) is newish to the deck and takes too much time milling or searching and so on.
Case where the matchup is grindy. but that's really a corner case, since you might be playing UW but they can potentially get out from under bridge for a kill and so on.

"Unfun" does not really resonate with me as a reason to ban something. I like Lantern, one of my Modern-playing friends despises it. Another is confident he can't lose to it (UW player). It's a niche deck that is super skill-intensive. Let's not kill that? They could kill Opal but that seems a bit meh. Just leave the format alone for this cycle and see if the deck becomes oppressive. Twitter peeps (Twweeps) have suggested axing Whir, since it's an instant-to-field tutor...
