The End of an Era

Hey guys, I'm a veteran player who's been playing off and on at a competitive level since Odyssey and getting back into the game again on a serious level for the first time in a couple years. I'm looking for some cool people in the Seattle area to get together and playtest with for the Standard PTQ season if anyone is interested. Although I'm off a long break, I'm a very competent player and have a significant number of matchups both with and against all of the top decks in Standard. I'm currently testing consistently during the weekends but would love to find some others who might be interested in gaming locally through the week. I would want to find a local shop in North Seattle/Shoreline as an option for playing Standard/Limited formats as well, if anyone has a good recommendation. Thanks!

You'll be getting that much closer to people that are doing what you want to do and can help open doors for you.

I appreciate all your pointers and, of course, reading what you have in store for the finale of the Ravnica block. Take care!

I might be straying off topic with this, but I'm facing a dilemma right now and wanted your advice. I've been interested in writing for some time now but short of writing for myself and the Pierce College newspaper (yes, I'm a local boy Smile ), I've been having trouble trying to get my foot in the door. I know you were probably in about the same place I am right now at some point in time. I figure if there's anyone who could give me a meaningful pointer or two, it would probably be you.

I can 100% confirm this guys. One of the judges at a PTQ yesterday had one in person that I briefly saw. What he said is that its only for PT judges, and not GP judges. I didn't get a close look at the foiling process but it did have a logo in the text box that was foil (I think the DCI logo) and from what I remember the entire text box was foiled as well.

If you're talking about the one that showed up at the Seattle PTQ, the rumor was that only the staff at PT London would be recieving these. So if this is correct, we can assume that only a couple dozen of these bad boys were printed.

John Lindley, owner of MTG Sold Here, purchased John Carter's copy for $200.

Edit: He had later mentioned that he would attempt to sell the card at $475. His ebay store can be found at http://stores.ebay.com/mtgsoldhere-com_W0QQstorecachemissZmtgsoldherecomQQtZkm .

    Shouldn't this be in speculation?

I've been hearing the 10 painlands rumor for a couple months now from friends that "supposedly" know someone from R&D (and yes, I live close enough to headquarters that this is a viable possibility). Seeing this mentioned here solidifies the rumors of painlands somewhat in my mind, but I've been doubting these rumors for some time now. I guess we'll have to wait it out and stay hopeful.

I found the following, posted by massive, a moderator at mtgnews at http://forums.mtgnews.com/showthread.php?t=194139 .

Just in from the Rumor Wire is a rumor that Saviors will contain a sorcery or instant that lets you copy a land's ability. It's unclear from the rumor whether this will let you permanently copy the ability onto some other permanent, or just get a one-time second use out of your Boseiju ...

I'm not sure if this can be considered a trusted source, but the guy is a moderator and has 1,700ish posts, so I thought this was worth passing on here.

We didn't fear it because it doesn't work. The Rootwallas aren't in play when the Rites resolves, thus don't gain the bonus.

Maybe I should have added a *sarcasm*. The point I'm trying to make is that the idea of this -first turn- combo is completely ridiculous. Are you really going to put in all these "uber" targets for the Shoal and expect this thing to even theoretically go off? Obviously not.

I'm not saying that this card is bad, but the combo's viability has been entirely blown out of proportion. I think that the true use of these cards to even get close to this kind of combo utility will be as a dual-natured discard outlet and utlitity for a reanimator deck. You get the big bonus and the free discard outlet for your dudes.

Sorry about the double post but seriously. Off of a free 0/2 dude you can pay the four base mana for your normal reanimaion with the added bonus of hitting your opponent + a 5/4 beater that keeps on doing the job with an ability that makes it nigh-unkillable by your next untap step if you had the notion to play it early. If they did give this guy Ninjitsu 3-4 during the early stages of testing I could only imagine how completely ridiculous this play must have been.

the part that makes me wonder is the one about a creature causing people to scoop.

I've got my money on Ink-Eyes honestly. Since he stated that Ninjitsu.dec completely owned the FFL (CHK block's Wizard.dec imho) there seems to be a great possibility that some of their playtesters were bouncing Ornithopters and Somber Hoverguards for this guy and putting their opponents into a complete bind. Honestly, the first time I saw the guy, I immediately put the finishing touches on a Ninja-based deck.

I was thinking about the Red Shoal solo. Totally forgot about the implications in multiples. The same could have been said about multiple Basking Rootwallas and a Rites of Initiation in Odyssey Block but I'm sure we have our reasons not to fear that combo all that much.

Just a tidbit from Paul Sottosanti's article for 1/14/05, "When Trees Attack" --

"There's a card in the set that almost died at numerous points because it carried with it the possibility of first turn kills in Standard, but it narrowly survived and still exists today."

have we collected any data on cards covered in the Rumor Mill that could kill on turn one? Just thought this would make a very interesting topic for discussion.

Great find! I was really hoping for that Man'O'War variant from ninjitsu!
