If they mess up your first attack and you tapped out, topdecking village bellringers is an option! (so is just having him in hand, so I guess pretend your hand was empty too)

I have to agree in that it doesn't seem competitive at all, but there's also something great to be had in playing the witch. Turn 5 (no ramp) demon, turn 6 bitterheart witch, sac her, curse you, attack for 18- that's awesome. Fragile and slow, but there are still places to play this deck. Besides, what else are you going to do with those promo demons?
    Crimson mage
    Grim lavamancer
Mage gives a late demon haste then gets eaten, lavamancer is just a red human, both allow you to play red black fling witch curse combo... Blue has invisible stalker as an unlikely to get killed before next turn human (if you aren't winning in the one hit), and snapcaster can get flashed in and sacced on upkeep/flashback black removal.

In a casual atmosphere the deck would be funny. The biggest problem, it seems to me, would be not drawing the demon. It feels a bit like the heartless summoning/gutter grime decks I tested very briefly. Without the demon what's the backup plan? Are you going to play diabolic tutor as your turn 4 play? (you could always splash green and trade as much as you can and play a backup plan of ghoultree fling!)

Even if it could block that's still 10 poison, so it seems likely there was some other reason. I can't think of what it could have been though, heh.

Hey guys. Is there any way to play on cockatrice through lan (not going through one of their servers)? We tried changing the 'host' on both to the same ip hoping it would go through our network but it didn't seem to work. Any experience here?

  • posted a message on [deck] Torpor Blowout (Budget)
This deck sticks out to me as one of the cheapest decks possible, which is really my goal. The most expensive card I don't own is probably trickbind, but I could do a couple of that (or 4 if I find any for trade) and some echoing truths, since those are really cheap. What color would you pair with blue, and how many fatties do you think is best? Hunted phantasm is a shoe in if I play echoing truth, possibly a couple sky swallowers. Boldwyr heavyweights actually seems okay, though I'm not sure red is the best partner for blue. Black's hunted creature is pretty though, though it also takes double colors. Hunted troll is good as well and gives you nulltread gargantuan.

What do you guys think about ovinomancer? Is he still too slow? He seems good in theory to me, but I could understand if he does what he does too slowly for modern (really haven't played outside a few games). Seems like value town at the worst. What counterspells/how many?

tldr I want to kill people with eater of days, how do I do it?

I play him in my sekkuar, but I don't have perfect lands (none of the expensive ones basically... I naturally owned a lot of the less good ones, I just went in and out of playing at the wrong times I guess, heh). Granted he is green and has a good deal of ramp... The game plan is to sac dudes repeatedly/for benefit, and I feel like he does a good job. Sure, he ramps in a color that has ramp, but he also draws, and recurring him early on can set you up really well (in our group you don't want to be too threatening too early on imo, and ramping is deceiving to people not paying close attention, and even if they are he has to be exiled with the right engine).

All that aside, seeing people say he's good except in good was a shock. I'll probably go over and examine him some more. I think I still like him... I mean, I'm playing a farhaven elf atm...

  • posted a message on [Official][Developing] Gutter Grime
Are there any zombies that make gravecrawler an option? He seems pretty neat. I was also considering sylvok lifestaff and flesheater imp but the biggest problem is that heartless kills them before you would get to use them. I suppose it could be a nonheartless variant, but I'm not sure that is worthwhile (imp isn't as reliable, and mortarpod, which I was considering as a sac outlet, is considerably slower). I originally looked at the crawler in the light of r/b burning vengeance, but gutter grime could be interesting too. Or some combination that has wretched mana...

How much enchantment hate do you guys see? Any, even post board? Is it silly to consider auramancer/dead weight as a backup plan to a removed grime and anti aggro strat?

Has anyone tried testing a black BV build utilizing gravecrawler? Play a mortar pod or two. Gives you interesting plays in geistflaming crawler then replaying crawler flashing back geist for additional damage. I'm not sure what other zombies are worth running really. Maybe a singleton grimgrin. Diregraf captain...? That seems too far into a different deck. I wish reassembling wasn't an ability but rather casting.. Still, gravecrawler seems like he wants in somehow.

What about red/black? Moan of the unhallowed, gravecrawler, singleton army of the damned, sever the bloodline. Depending on how the deck plays out, potentially bump in the night. Too slow? Too inconsistent? Seems fun, I may put it together. I have most of what I need (maybe only three GCS...could proxy one I suppose). Splash green for gutter grime? Lol.

Are you playing greed in your greed deck?

Envy feels like it should be stealing stuff (greed does too, but greed has other options), but it feels more red than blue. I would personally play every temporary steal effect you can get your hand on and a lot of sac outlets. If you can't have it no one can *hulk smash*.

Pride seems like where you can sneak white into the 7. White could probably do wrath too. Green seems like the hardest to fit in somewhere (it's the most pure color imo), but fatties is a fair way to get it in there. I personally like the idea of grimgrin eating people for gluttony and playing stuff like feeding frenzy... Not good, just flavorful, heh.

  • posted a message on [SCD] garruk relentless
Right now I have garruk relentless in my sek'kuar deck. It basically is neat with parallel lives... Makes stuff to sac... I could see it coming out. It hasn't been bad yet, but I have limited testing. I think I have had him out twice and the once I just spat out wolves every turn and he lived all game, and eventually I jokulhaupsed and kept him around (though I'd basically won once that resolved anyway). I probably have some other subpar cards since I made the deck purely out of what we own, but garruk will probably stay in for more testing and then we'll see. I think he should've died several times that game but we had a player who could letting him live when he didn't have to. He's currently in because I can't find garruk 2.0 (though he's hard on the mana). 2.0 probably comes out several turns after 3.0.

Which garruk is best in your opinions? If I can somehow locate 2.0 we have all three in our pools. (is that too much of a derail?)

You don't happen to have one on hand for testing? That would obviously be the best way to decide, but since he's still relatively expensive.. Know anyone with a copy? :p

  • posted a message on Does your LGS charge money to play Commander
Our lgs just opened this last year and only two or so months ago did we start playing commander. It started with our tighter playgroup and has expanded a bit (primarily through precons that get altered, though it goes from there). It's not supported, just pick up games at the store (or elsewhere). If it was pay to play (I know they want to do a tournament or weekly games for a few bucks) I doubt I would play in those games. I draft too much as it is, and I don't like what money has the potential of doing to games. The store is already split into two groups- people that know how to play and people that barely has a grasp on basic concepts. Most of the precons would have been better unaltered so far. I'm not sure the competitive nature money brings (even a few bucks) would be helpful, simply because they are pretty far away from buying cards online/making a cohesive deck with enough answers (generalizing, but its pretty true). I also wouldn't want to pay to play with the couple more people at the lgs when we have enough people outside of lgs acquaintances (and one person could get a really easy pod).

That said, I'm not sure how the store is still open. I'm not sure how much longer it will be either, so any flow of money in would be fine, and I don't have to participate if I don't want to.

  • posted a message on How good is Bloodline Keeper?
I think you have to just forget about the keeper and not play black. Double second or third pick in the last pack is not a good signal to move in on it. It got passed because they aren't playing black, this is true...but they passed it because it's not splashable, just like you should have (unless you really want it for a deck and there was nothing good in the pack even at that point).

I notice your removal consists of a prey upon, a rolling temblor, and a spidery grasp (yeah..). Temblor kills half your deck- so does prey upon. You really needed to pick geistflames/brimstone volleys very high. It seems like at least one should have passed you, and there's not much in the deck that is better than one of the burn spells. Also, as mentioned above, you have playables in your side and some less playable cards in your main.

I know that just because I have one werewolf, it doesn't mean I should force the archetype: but I did okay.
First half is true. Second half- how okay did you do? You're asking what went wrong, and looking at the deck a few things did, so I'm curious how you placed.

  • posted a message on [MCD] Greel, Mind Raker vs Volrath the Fallen
I like Volrath. Granted, most of them is because I remember him being a cool character...
Don't forget to look through the madness cards if you are playing these guys, maybe tortured existence madness subtheme? :p

Are these two the only ones you are considering (do you own them?)? Geth, lord of the vault is pretty popular as reanimator. There are some other generals that more directly deal with reanimating. The fact that these guys only enable reanimation and do so turn 6/7 if untouched means that you likely won't need the discard effect as far as dumping fatties is concerned. That said, I really do like volrath more. Discarding two seems brutal, especially when you only get to nuke one hand (though random discard is powerful). Volrath gives you a way to general damage people too with funny stuff like draco.

If you had some way to reliably draw/get stuff back to your hand I could see nuking entire hands with greel being powerful. I don't think people will let that happen too often though. If he gets successfully greaved up and you have like phyrexian reclamation or arena/other draw outlets I could see him being brutal too though.

We've picked up quite a few 5/5 flying demon tokens from playing innistrad. They could make good replacements to dragons. Flipping them up is pretty fun usually.

  • posted a message on Ideas for a silly, fun EDH deck?
Yeah, my first question was similar to Coffee's. I'm not a fan of chaos for the sake of chaos, and I'm also not a fan of playing annoying decks to annoy people. I'm not sure anyone will enjoy resolving a scrambleverse with 3 or 5 people (like 30 permanents with a number of players that makes using dice awkward and is hard to make favor the caster). A lot of this depends on who you play with of course. We don't play infinite combos or buy ridiculously expensive cards (well, there may be a grimgrin deck with infinite combos at some point, but it's many cards and hopefully easily interrupted), and while that limits our deckbuilding, playing to win is the idea once you start a game. Chaos doesn't make you allies or get you anywhere in the game.

All that said, thieves auction. People don't like resolving one with a lot of people in the game (and I hope you all have different sleeves), but it becomes pretty powerful one on one imo.

The graveyard order could be a pain to some, sometimes I put reassembling near the top so I don't completely forget, but the card itself is interesting. I wish he costs less, but I would give him a go in my sek'kuar. Would be better if I could cast him as an instant, but I don't have/play orrery.
