Wikipedia has this in it's article:

"The case did not involve the federal ban on direct contributions from corporations or unions to candidate campaigns or political parties."

So, the difference is that the repeal allows corporations to broadcast opinions on politics, including the endorsement (or lack of) towards various candidates. A candidate, however, cannot directly receive funding towards their campaign. In this case, even providing a set and crew for a broadcast program would probably be considered a direct contribution.

Really, the appeal just means that those "Paid for by [random patriotic-sounding group]" ads can be run by corporate entities.

Strangely enough, I find the most success in trading to come at prereleases, from a Legacy perspective. It's probably the most likely time that you will get the crowd of somewhat casual players who both want newer things and have the older stuff.

I think the M11 prerelease had the largest trade I've made in the past year, being about $400 going in both directions and attracting a crowd in-and-of-itself.

I don't have a playset, I just have the single copy. I could get two dual lands for it no?

You can get a straight 1-1 for Underground Seas, 2-1 probably for Taiga, Tropical Island, or Volcanic Island, and 3-1 for Scrubland, Plateau, Savannah, or Badlands.

Tundra lies between 1-1 and 2-1, and Bayou lies between 2-1 and 3-1. The duals listed are also by value, so you'll have an easier time getting 3 Badlands than 3 Scrubland. If you can get any dual at these ratios (or better), I would highly recommend trading JTMSs out for them.

  • posted a message on will monster binders keep cards in top condition?
If you're double-sleeving already, what you place them in further really won't affect the cards to the point of affecting their condition except in extreme circumstances.

Personally, though, I would push more towards 9-page sleeves in a hard-cover binder, if you're really looking at storing value. I don't have any issue with the monster-brand binders, but I think you'd have both a cheaper and safer solution with something with a hard cover.

What generally happens is that a link will appear on the webcast site around the time that they are ready to go live, and at that point you can just click on that image/link and get the webcast.

For reference, as of typing this there is no link to access the webcast. It should be there within the next half-hour, though.

  • posted a message on I don't know how to draft Onslaught block.
The end of Onslaught block was right when I began drafting, but what I remember and have had others reminisce about in regards to the block:

    - Remember that the creatures are generally weaker in comparison today. The ability to deal 2 damage to a creature is the same as 3 damage today, so don't turn your eye away from direct damage just because it isn't a lot of it.
    - An off-color creature with Morph is like an off-color Myr in SOM draft: you'll probably still play them, as they'll still help you a good bit. (again - weaker creatures in the format)
    - Some tribes are more important than others, but let the draft dictate how much you'll focus on a tribal strategy. Especially pay attention to Goblins and Soldiers. If you end up in a tribal focus, look heavily for Amplify cards in Legions.
    - You're drafting Legions, so you'll have at least 15 creatures to choose your deck from, guaranteed.

Right-click on the bar and make sure "Lock the Taskbar" is not selected. Then you should be able to drag the taskbar like you would a window and drag it to different edges of the screen.

(that's how it works in XP at least; my W7 system is incapacitated on it's mac side so I can't test it on that OS currently)

In addition to knowing about WER and how to run a tournament with it, make sure that you're always one step ahead of the tournament in terms of where your thinking is.

Example: After everyone is seated and figuring out their decks, you can save time a little later on by making sure all the Round 1 information (pairings, result slips if you're using them) are printed out and ready to go. You can always do that early and just not show players. (make sure you're picking up booster wrappers and other trash during this time, though)

Also, one thing to keep in mind about this prerelease in particular is that logistics will be a touch harder than normal, as you will need to worry about players receiving one of two different sets of product*. Just make sure that you have an idea about what you're going to do before you go into doing it, and you'll usually be just fine.

*For this prerelease, if you're not expecting a huge (>25-30) turnout, I would handle the registration, entry payment, and product distribution all at the same time; just have people line up and do everything together, then just tell them a table number for them to go to and build with their product. (1st/2nd players at table 1, 3rd/4th at 2, etc.) You can make announcements right before you ask people to get in line.

Seems fine; only thing I'm not sure on personally is how modern Athlons compare to Intel chips, though I haven't heard bad things.

The secret monitor deal on the site, on the other hand, seems almost absurdly good.

    Quote from DamnDrone
Is the Imprint ability linked to anything at all?
Since it says that "that player exiles it", does it count as a "nonland card exiled with knowledge pool"?

This may clarify how the card works:

Three players (A, B, and C) in the game. When Knowledge Pool's comes-into-play ability resolves, each of these players exiles the top 3 cards of their library. (we'll call them 1, 2, and 3) So, we have 9 cards exiled:

    A1, A2, A3, B1, B2, B3, C1, C2, C3

Player A plays a card from their hand. (we'll call it A4) Knowledge Pool triggers, and A can choose to exile A4. If he/she does, they can then choose among the previous 9 cards and play it for free.

So, let's say A chooses C2 as the card to play. A plays it for free, and it goes into C's graveyard. (as they own the card, and cards owned by one player can't go into another player's graveyard) Now, there are still nine cards exiled via Knowledge Pool:

    A1, A2, A3, A4, B1, B2, B3, C1, C3

So, if B plays a spell, they can choose A4 as the card to play via Knowledge Pool's ability, as well as the other eight cards.

  • posted a message on How Do You Appeal a Penalty to the DCI?
But say you get a DQ that you believe was wrongfully handed out, can you file a complaint with the DCI?

What happens when you get a DQ is that, by the process of handling a DQ, the player is given the opportunity to write out a statement (which wintesses and the HJ also are asked to do) which are all sent to the DCI for further evaluation; that is your opportunity for writing what you need to.

    Quote from JarethVarant
I found the answer to your question at the following location:

    http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dci/appeals/policy

That location is for appealing an incorrect report of what is listed in your personal information center, usually for a match reported incorrectly. (and affecting your ratings) I sent in a lot of those over a few month period when one location I occasionally judged at accidentally listed me as judging, but at the same time I was listed as playing in another event 300 miles away.

Probably your best bet for contacting the DCI about something like this would be to sent a message through this site. (under WPN Players > Event Information/Feedback) A few years ago I know a ruling/situation which I was involved with that I was contacted in regards to after the event, and I believe the player involved went to that site to vent on that situation.

    Quote from JarethVarant
Sorry, I was answering the OP question, not the one directly above my post.

I was directly referring to your quote referencing the OP. It sounds like he found that location already, and was looking for a resource for contacting the DCI on an appealed call that he felt was still ruled incorrectly.

  • posted a message on How to Splash Mana
    Quote from Rute675
    Hi All,

I'm hoping to get some help with understand how to splash mana. Is there any good math behind how many lands you would run for X number of cards? For instance, I'm recently running a BG Infect deck with 23 lands. I want to add 4 copies of Distortion Strike. How many blue mana sources should I run for just 4 blue cards? Ideally I would like to have play sets of Verdant Catacombs and Misty Rainforest, but those aren't in my inventory at the moment. So what should I do in this case? 9 Forest, 9 Swamp, 5 Island? Any help on understanding the math would be very appreciated. Thanks.

In a general sense, once you get beyond mana-fixing and everything else and get down to X basic vs. Y another basic, you need to look at a couple things:
    - How early/late does having the color of mana available matter? If I am playing Force of Savagery in a deck, odds are I won't be playing it too early, since I need another card for it to actually live, so if that was the only green card in the deck, I wouldn't necessarily need green mana on turn 1.
    - How intensive are your color needs? If I play [card]Volition Reins[card] in a deck, even though I probably won't play it quickly, I'll need a lot of blue sources to ensure that I can play it when I need to.

In this case, if you are unable to use fetchlands, I would recommend (as the previous poster did) Evolving Wilds. You could get by on 2 Islands with four Wilds in your deck, as you will never really need more than one of them in a game. (I would say 1 Island if Acidic Slime wasn't in the format)

The last draft I ever played in Time Spiral block, I randomly noticed that there were a lot of Tolarian Sentinels in the initial few packs, and randomly was able to grab three on the second lap of boosters, so I went for the combo deck. Pack 2, I see the same thing with Reality Acids and go for the rebound picks a second time, and snag a couple of those as well.

The deck ends up being the standard "good" U/G deck of that block (Errant Ephemerons, Infiltrator Il-Kors, Shaper Parasites, and a Sprout Swarm) but also containing the combo pieces.

Easily the most lopsided deck that I have drafted. (that wasn't a "nothing but insane bombs" deck)
