That. And it can't hit flying creatures. I run Sulfurous Blast instead. It hits all creatures, hits players, does 3 damage like Flamebreak and can be played as an instant if there are no toughness 3 creatures you want to kill. 2RR is more or less the same cost as RRR. The only thing you lose is the anti regeneration clause, but how many small regenerators are you running? Probably less than you have little flying creatures.
Anyways I guess i can take out the much hated Timbermare for this new guy.
That's what I thought, too. Well except for the "hated" part, our group really likes Timbermare. However, it is the only 4 cost guy I would cut for the Vengevine.
Hm, unless I open one at the prereleases, I will probably not include the new guy. He is not so good that I can see myself activeley looking for him.
I have Burried Alive in there because I support reanimator in black and white, though I have thought about cutting it multiple times. Small Pox was also put in as an enabler for that strategy, but it has proven to be generally quite useful (enemy has two lands and an aggro creature, you have no creature and a card in hand that you don't need or even want to discard >> play Small Pox >> profit). Reanimation is a good strategy in this cube, but not overpowered.
There are two simple reasons for Cryptic Command not being in the cube: 1) Nobody wants to trade it. 2) It still costs over 10 €. If I ever get one, it will be included immediately.
So people are threatening to quit Magic (again), this time because of a white uncommon wall that uses a mechanic that every color gets in a slightly unusual way (for white). A wall! At uncommon!
A few facts:
- Cantrips, slowtrips and creaturetrips are all essentially the same mechanic: Adding "draw a card" to a (most often) small effect.
- Cantrips aren't card drawing in the color pie defining sense, the card just replaces itself.
- Every color gets cantrips.
- White already has 34 cantrips (green has 40).
- White is the primary defender color (while green doesn't even come in second).
- Wall of Blossoms makes sense in green, white and blue.
So please calm down, Wall of Omens is a perfectly fine card in white.
This is proven wrong with a simple card search. Before Wall of Omens was a printed, white has never had a creature with this effect, in the history of the game. Ergo, the argument of "every color gets this" is demonstrably untrue.
The real greater problem here is people trying blur the line of what a cantrip is in order to make something decidedly out of place sound plausible or reasonable.
I am not trying to blur the line of what a cantrip is. A cantrip is a card that lets you draw a card in addition to its other (mostly small) effect(s). And while a white cantripping creature is highly unusual, it is still utilizing a mechanic that basicly every color gets.
Why were so many people expecting a white Wall of Blossoms after MaRo's twitter message if this would be something utterly unthinkable? Well, because it's not.
Welcome to the cube forum. And I think the formatting is fine so far. Looking forward to seeing the rest of the cube when it's uploaded.
Thanks! I will have the whole thing up by tomorrow. It is already quite late around here, so I think that's it for today. Well, maybe I just do green...
The big difference between regular cantrips and cantrips on permanents is that the permanent sticks around so that at the end of the deal you are up a card in terms of card advantage instead of neutral. This is somewhat lessened on auras (which have the possibility of being easily two for oned,) but a cantrip effect on anything else is more or less straight up card advantage. It is especially so on creatures, which are much more rarely "dead cards" since they can attack and block.
The logic is flawed: In both cases, you cast a card (-1 card), get an effect (a creature in some cases) and then draw a card (+1 card). You get an effect without losing a card, regardless if that it is a regular cantrip or a creaturetrip.
And by the way, if we are talking about permanents, than white has also Lashknife Barrier besides several cantripping Auras.
[/CARD]This means that cantrips function somewhat differently on creatures than on other card types. Cantrips on spells are often used to pump up an effect that's so weak that it isn't worth spending a card on, no matter what the mana cost of the card (ex. Needle Drop, Quicken, Accelerate.) Cantrips that do something that is actually worth something are expensive and tend to show up in sets which have a lot of cantrips. Cards like Electrolyze, which combine a good effect, cheap cost, and cantrip are rare.[CARD]
I've seen this asked before, but is a Kraken Hatchling worth the card? Not in constructed, I think we can agree on this. It is the cantrip effect that makes Wall of Blossoms playable, not its stats. A 0/4 defender is an effect just as small as Accelerate.
This is my unpowered, yet powerful and fun cube. I started making it during the Ravnica block. It had only 400 cards at first, but has later become a 480 card cube, then 560 cards. A few years ago, I went up to 600 cards.
We normally draft two or three times a month. Most of the time, there are 6 or more drafters. I would say that decks drafted with this cube are roughly 40 % two color, 40 % three color and 20 % other color combinations, with monocolor being the least drafted one. We sometimes play 2HG and Archenemy with the drafted decks, but the vast amount of games are played as duels.
The following list isn't always up-to-date. My CUBETUTOR LIST however is always fully updated.
The first numbers are the hard and fast ones. After the "+" are the more restricted effects, like lands that can turn into creatures or spells with limited targets.
This is a traditional, unpowered cube with a sleight emphasis on fun over pure effectiveness and an average mana cost and creature count that is a little bit higher than usual.
While I follow the credo of playing the best cards ever printed, some cards are just crowd favorites or pet cards of mine. Those are in the cube even if they may not be the absolutely best cards around. And I don't like to have fast mana acceleration in my cube, because it can make the early turns so swingy and because it increases the luck-of-the-draw effect.
The cube is divided in eight categories: The five colors, multicolor (including hybrid and split cards), artifacts (specificly colorless cards) and lands. There are 76 cards per color, 85 cards for artifacts (and other colorless cards), 55 cards for multicolor and 80 cards for lands. The cube is therefore 600 cards big. Each section (except for multicolor and lands) roughly lists how well it supports the three main archetypes aggro, midrange and control. The numbers are basically per cent.
Cards are put into a category according to their mana cost. Phyrexian Metamorph is an artifact and it is often played for 3, but its cost contains blue mana, so it is a blue card. Kird Ape is only good with a forest in play, but its cost contains only red mana, so it is a red card.
Multicolor, hybrids and split cards share the same category. Most belong to one of the ten guilds / two color pairs, but I also play five three color cards. Some guilds have one or two cards less than others, because the available cards don't meet the necessary standards. This slight imbalance seems to be ok in a cube of this size.
Cards are grouped under their converted mana cost, which is the actual printed cost. For example, Kor Sanctifiers is grouped under the white creatures with 3 CMC, but since he can be played for four mana, there is a little note ("+1", to be exact) at the group of white creatures with 4 CMC. The same system is used for cards with morph, kicker or similar abilities. Cards with highly variable mana costs are simply grouped under "X". Furthermore, spells that create creatures right away are grouped under creatures.
Cards are selected for their power level and for the role they fulfill (for example, Vampire Interloper is not one of the most powerful black cards, but I needed another creature with a cost of 1B and it is a reasonable card in that regard).
The cube is a bit creature heavier than usual, so that it resembles regular limited play. This also helps aggro and midrange to draft enough creatures to keep control from being to dominant. This is why around 50 % of the cards are - and will always be - creatures.
Why isn't card X included? There could be several reasons: I don't own it and it isn't that high on my priority to get it. I personally don't think that card is that good or that it wouldn't fit nicely in this cube. I would have to take something out that I don't want to take out (and some cards have quite a nostalgic value for me and my group). That doesn't mean that I am not open to suggestions.
There are several themes supported in this cube:
Blink WU
Artifacts U (+B)
Heavy Black B
Pox/Stax B (+W/R/G)
Reanimation B (+U/R/G)
Wildfire R
Ramp G
My cube uses 35 each of the following basic lands:
The cube has an equal number of cards in every section (W U B R G M A L). It has currently 80 cards per color and for artifacts, 50 cards for multicolor and 70 cards for lands. It also contains at least one card from every Magic set ever released, with the exception of Unsets, Portal (not counting Three Kingdoms) and Starter.
Another (minor) aspects of card selection are the fun factor and the historical value of the card. For example, cards like Armageddon and Mind Twist where removed for being too frustrating to play against. Cards like Avatar of Woe get some extra points for all the history and nostalgic feelings attached to them.
Why no Elite Vanguard or Fyndhorn Elves? Well, because they are already in the cube. Say what? I already have Savannah Lions and Llanowar Elves and at one point I realized that having essentially two copies of a card - even with different names - was against the spirit of a highlander format.
Why no Planeswalkers? There are two reasons: Firstly, most of them are quite costly or otherwise hard to acquire. Secondly, I asked my playgroup about adding them, and most of the players were against it, because they favor playing some old school magic without this fancy new card type. Maybe, I will add them one day, since almost all of them are cube worthy.
I have at least one card from every regular Magic set in the cube (this excludes Un-sets, Portal and Starter, but includes Three Kingdoms). Reprints are counted as the set they appeared in first.
As for "every color gets cantrips:" this is true. However, cantriping creatures (as in, creatures that draw a card when coming into play) are much more rare.
So while creatures that give you a card when coming into play have been rare, they clearly have been centered in green. The other colors hardly have any examples at all. Thus Wall of Omens IS something that goes against the history of the game. Whether that is a good thing or not is another discussion, but it's undeniably an addition to white's slice of the color pie.
Well, mechanicly, cantrips and creaturetrips are the same: You draw a card after you cast the spell and it isn't countered.
And yes, it is only white's second creaturetrip ever, but a) it's still more or less a cantrip (see above), b) white is the second best creature color after green and there is no reason not to share creaturetrips between the two and c) white is the best defender color, so it is reasonable that white gets one of the best defenders ever printed.
It is true, that the creaturetrip ability of Wall of Omens is an (slight) addition to white's slice of the color pie, but the card itself makes perfect sense in white. There is no reason to make such a fuss about the card.
Hello! I am a fellow cuber (is that a word?) that joined these forums just today.
I have to say that I am quite unsure abaout the Kargan Dragonlord. He is just okay, but I was looking for another red 2 drop the other day and was considereng subpar stuff like Viashino Slaughtermaster, Skirk Marauder and even Goblin Furrier (since it is more or less a red Grizzly Bear in my Cube, but still *shudder*) when I checked the RoE spoiler and saw the Dragonlord. And my first thought was: That's it! That's what I'm looking for. A red bear with an upside.
The longer I thought about it and the more posts I read here, the more my enthusiasm went away. Is the card too red intensive? Is the Slaughtermaster better in Cube? Are there other alternatives? Should I post this in another thread?
Also, Regress, Vendetta, Demystify, Heat Ray, Glory Seaker? Those sure are a lot of reprints. And not especially good ones...
I just cannot say how irritated I was when I started reading the comments regarding Wall of Omens. Well, actually I can: I was so irritated that joined this forum just to reply to all this madness.
You see, my first reaction to MaRo's twitter message regarding the "colorshifting" of a famous wall to white was: "Cool, they are probably printing a white Wall of Blossoms, makes perfect sense." And when it was revealed today to be excactly that card, I was absolutely taken aback by the sheer amount of people who complained that a white Wall of Blossoms doesn't make any sense. This thought would have never even occured to me, because... a white Wall of Blossoms makes perfekt sense!
Many arguments where given for each side, so I will just summarize my thinking. I will list different aspects of the card and how the three relevant colors rank in them (1 being the best rank):
Defenders: white (1), blue (2), green (3) >> Green has much fewer defenders than the other two colors.
Cantrips: white (2), blue (1), green (2) >> ALL colors get cantrips, but blue has the most and best, since it is the card drawing color.
Creaturetrips: white (3), blue (2), green (1) >> Granted, white only has Carrier Pigeons so far.
Creatures: white (2), blue (3), green (1) >> Well, this should be obvious.
So our final scores are (the less points, the better): 7 points for green, 8 points for white and blue. So green is slightly more fitting for wall of blossoms than white, but white is so close that it doesn't really matter. Blue wouldn't have been more fitting than white, but equally fitting.
Now, while all the chosen aspects are true for the card, they seem to overlap a bit (all defenders are creatures and cantrips and creaturetrips are mechanicly the same). Let's try to erase some of the overlapping aspects:
Only defenders and cantrips: 3 points for white and blue, 5 for green.
Only defenders and creaturetrips: 4 points for all of them.
So in conclusion: Regarding the ranking of the different aspects of the card Wall of Blossom / Omens in accordance to the color pie, the card being white makes just as much sense as the card being blue and just about the same as it being green. Yes, Wizards could have printed the card in blue, but there is really now reason to complain that they actually printed it in white from a mechanical / color pie standpoint. The card is perfect in white, end of discussion.
