I love the flavor, and he's cute. I don't know that he pushes out any of black's other three-drops. At a certain point cube is just full of incredible cards, and it takes a very pushed card to make its way in.

<<Ophiomancer>> (maybe leaning towards yes)
<<Witch Hunt>> (maybe leaning towards no)
<<Sudden Demise>> (maybe leaning towards no)
<<Spawning Grounds>> (maybe leaning towards no)
I love the Ophiomancer, AKA Lord Voldemort, though he may not quite have the power level to make it in...still I do support Pox, so I want to at least try him.
Spawning Grounds also strikes me as an interesting card. It's something to ramp to for green, and lands/enchantments are much tougher to deal with than typical large fatties...I just don't think for all that investment a steam of 5/5 tokens so late in the game will matter. Still, it's a mechanical space I'm glad the designers are exploring.
Sudden Demise is OK, but it seems as though a lot of decks are two or more colors. I think I'll ultimately pass.
Witch Hunt's mana cost is pretty high. If it were 4, I'd replace Manabarbs. At 5, I don't think that will happen.
Hmm. I don't know about Witch Hunt. The kind of deck that wants it loves the 3 CMC of Sulfuric Vortex. 5 mana is a big investment. I run Manabarbs in my cube, and I've had a lot of good results with it, but even Barbs only costs 4. Still, red does have some decent 5 CMC spells and creatures that aggro can run, and this does close the game out quick if it resolves.
Am I crazy, or is aggro getting some excellent support with this new set? That's great, because control, at least in my cube, is very popular, so a little aggro help (and a lot from Theros) goes a long way.
I'm trying to figure out what I'll cut for him. He's better than either Invisible Stalker or Dungeon Geists, but he wants to be in the same deck as both of those cards. He's also better than Sea Gate Oracle at blocking....this is going to lead to some headaches...
Do we even need to discuss this? The card is amazing, and is an absolute 360 staple. For those of us who support blue tempo, he is even better! If this was the only thing to come out of the new set, it would still be huge for cube!
I think the old frame promo is nice, but Alpha/Beta Terror looks really badass imo.
I completely agree. As I've started to pimp my cube, I've really come down on the side of Beta cards as much as possible. There's something about the simple, unadorned, classic pictures that I just love.
Looks very solid. I've been debating giving green a shot at aggro, and this card is an excellent aggro enabler. I like it much more than an Anthem effect, as, obviously, creatures that attack more than once get more than one token, and the effect is permanent. This could be particularly sick with Persist creatures like Kitchen Finks or Glen Elendra Archmage.
I like and support blue tempo and I still can't see this card making the cut. He dies to all sorts of removal, and he doesn't guarantee a sizable board presence all on his own.
Nine proxies. Its obvious which nine.
I really wish i could stomach an all proxy cube. I think magic's value is going to crash. A piece of cardboard should never be $5000. I love magic and its a great game but the prices are ridiculous and it is going to crash soon.
I spent my junior year abroad at Oxford University. At the time I had left Magic for Legend of the Five Rings, and was positive that card prices were insane and that Magic was going to be a fond memory in a few years. I figured this would be a great time to sell my collection. That was in 2003, and I remember being very excited to get $600 for my mint beta Lotus. I won't bet against Magic again. I'm holding my extra box of black on black planes walkers to see how high it goes!
