The End of an Era

I think the set's going to be ok. I always reserve judgement until after the set is released since a card can look good on paper and end up crap vice versa. I'm excited about the prerelease and I think theres quite a few playable cards to work with in the set

One of my dissapointments of the set is that most of the colorshifted cards were timeshifted in TS, like that 2/4 regenerating angel is a timeshifted [CARD]ghost ship
[/CARD] which they printed in TS same for Rebuff the wicked. THey said the timeshifted cards for TS would be cards that are unlikely to be reprinted, but then they did!! I wish they would have chosen different cards in TS to timeshift. I do like how certain cards found an appropriate home in the right color though, like the green sinbad

All in all i think it should be an interesting set. And I'm sure that after a while someone's going to find something awesome out of this set and everyone's gonna say how great this set turned out to be

I think that since it becomes a swamp when it comes into play EVERY DECK playing black should have at least one.

Its like the legendary lands of kamigawa block. Most ppl had at least one in their deck just in case. I think that unlike the kamigawa lands, this one has potential to be built around, so there are some decks that will want more than one but I agree also that being legendary is a pretty big drawback. So I see it being in a lot of decks but not more than 2 in most.

I doubt they would use The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale it would be the only one so far that doesn't have an activated ability. All the other ones tap for their abilities. the "tabernacle" in the orb is probably based on the old one but its probly not a magus

that wasn't the real rath and storm story, it was messed up. In the real story Crovax kills selenia and then becomes a vampire, now instead mirri is going to become a vampire and crovax will be ascendant, thus the planeshifted legends

I think that with more decks able to use wrath effects, its not going to completely kill aggro, its going to make it more difficult to play especially with white drop of honey etc. I think aggro is just going to have to evolve. More resilient creatures will probably become more popular, dredge is better now, as is Saffi.
Its just like how some boros decks ran that one 2/4 w/pro red in sideboard to battle other boros decks. The decks aren't going to die, they just have to find new tech to battle with a format that is probably going to become more controling.

the black cards seem plausible, but I don't believe the Magus is real.

First off, this is a set supposed to be on the "present" and being the magus of a card from Odyssey block would be revisiting the "past" especially if there was a cycle of them. I also think that they wouldnt call them the Magi, because then ppl would confuse the two cycles. I think its still possible they would make creatures that had abilities of lands but i doubt they would be that land and i doubt they would be called Magi

I think one card that many people disregard is Grave Pact I use this as sideboard and it is INVALUABLE against aggro. A trade becomes a 2 for 1, plagued rusalka becomes a house and their removal spells become more difficult decisions for them. I also think that plagued sliver is amazing and i cant imagine why its not in everyone's main deck. I'm still undecided about the phyrexian totem though. I also don't like Curse of the Cabal, it just seems like if they have to sac one permanent every other turn, its not that great...

omg the prerelease was CRAZY!! There are so many chase rares its unbelievable. Some guy was trading Force of Wills for Jaya!! :0 I did tons of trading that day and got plenty of desirable trades, I just need to figure out what deck to put them in!

I didn't do so well, most games I got mana screwed and the games I didn't I totally owned. My rares sucked though, moonlace anyone? traded it for Jotun grunt :p

First flight I had a BR deck with lots of echo and thick-skinned goblin which is such a cool card!! Flame maw Kavu is really good. I had tons of removal but ended up going 2-2 because my second opponent had a greater gargadon that he sacced a bunch of permanents to get out extra early Frown

Second flight I had a BRu deck and went 1-2, what i liked though was that i had some really close games, some again attributed to the accursed mana screw, I dont think i was shuffling well enough, 17 lands should be enough

I was really sad I didnt win anything, this set is going to be major money and I cant wait till the Release tournament so that I can redeem myself Smile

    amen! Very well written rant!

Its taken me a while to get over the disbelief of the purple cards. I went through phases.

    1. omg they must just be promos, not type two legal, like extras like the player rewards
    2. omg they're standard legal they're going to make standard really varied!
    3. OMg where are they going to put it? Maybe it'll replace a card of its same rarity?
    4. OMG THEY PRINTED THE BLUE CHAR!!!

and now im into the OMG Wizards knows what they're doing so I better just sit back and enjoy it. I can't wait for the prerelease and I can't wait to hear MaRo's explanation of why they chose the cards that they did. This is going to be an amazing prerelease and an incredible standard season.

yeah thats true, I'd bet money on that, because in the story the thalakos, dauthi, and soltari were people who had been brought to Rath and the Phyrexians made a mistake so they didnt quite make it all the way and got stuck. This is probably what happened to these guys. Good call

I think the 5 damage spell is going to be lightning ax as homage to our good pal lava ax. I could see it being R for a madness cost but that would make it almost strickly better than fiery temper unless it didnt have a cost.

Yeah, Tomorrow's right, burn is better late game so making you play it later in the game wouldn't be much of a drawback.

I think the en-kor preview card has shadow, you can see he's kina whispy so i'm sure he's going to have shadow.

As for the other card, I think it might be the split second burn spell, we cant see enough of the card to tell whether or not it has the line but I think thats more likely than it being the 5 damage for 1

I think its soo cool. Whenever they make cards that herald cards from older sets it always makes me smile because if they do it in an interesting way, it reminds you of the fun you've had with the old card while introducing you to the new card. Like I love it when they reprint really cool cards that fit perfectly into a set. i was so happy when they reprinted atog in Mirrodin because that was the perfect place for him.

This set is just going to make me smile so much. I've been playing a long time, not long enough to know which card Evangelize referenced but long enough to enjoy most of the references, its going to be like playing Unhinged but with tournament legal cards. It'll be fun, but also in a tournament legal sorta way. Smile

Also to Dino Dude, Solar flare, skizzetron, etc aren't "net decks" they're decks that someone has made and they are archetypes which are currently doing very well in standard right now. They don't have to be "net decks" the decks that are copied from those decks without changing them, THOSE are netdecks. You dont have to ignore them just because you dont want to netdeck them. I know this is off-topic but i really want to respond to this comment. I love Ravnica block. I think this standard has been the most varied standard I have ever experienced. There are so many decks and so many different ways to build them the possibilities are limitless. Sure there are 10 guilds with which you can make 10 different two color decks, but thats only if you have no imagination, there are also combinations of 3 color decks combining two guilds, or even 4 or 5 color decks. And thats just considering the generic decks, within the color combinations you have limitless variety of control, aggro, combo, etc. In fact, I'd say that Ravnica was the first block where Wizards DIDNT say "Here's your deck kiddies" and i think its been one of the best sets in a long time.

I think theres deffinate potential for a GW control/aggro deck with this, heirarch, natural affinity troll ascetic the knight of the holy nimbus, etc. And obviously if they print some cool suspend cards.

I think this would go great in a BW control deck w/solar flare, ***, MIndstab and other suspenders, cuz it'd blow up the world and then blow away their hand after it finishes suspending.

I'm really excited! I REALLY hope I pull some of these at the prerelease!!!

yeah i'd deffinately say they'd reprint some slivers, it would help the environment for sliver decks and would be nostalgia value to the max! I could see slivers getting split second. that would be totally broken though!! Some of the slivers from Legions were actually pretty good so they might reprint those too. Heres hoping for a cool sliver deck!!
