I quit during Onslaught block and resumed playing in Zendikar, but have a very keen interest in knowing about Mirrodin + the adventures of Glissa and friends. - To post a comment, please login or register a new account.
Congratulations on your win. That lists looks like it's tailored to use SFM quite well, even has a Manriki on the side.
Has there been situations that the single Arcbound Ravager become quite useful? I have one ravager on on my list too, but he's there mostly for nostalgia purposes (sometimes able to eat excess opals).
I suggest an opening hand with at least one land. The combo can be started with only a petal, but it's helpful to have at least one sac land to help boost the initial mana production. An opening hand should also contain at least one dig spell (preordain, ponder).
This deck can be strong in the right meta, but if you keep playing it week after week people eventually become prepared. I found it too difficult to keep using the deck after my playgroup started to have Ethersworn Canonists maindeck (and ways to tutor for them).
A second Chalice might sometimes be necessary. The opponent could have ways of getting rid of the first one, via countering or artifact destruction (e.g. Qasali Pridemage, Smash to Smithereens). Just saying my opinion.. as a Zoo player, I'll try to pridemage away a chalice set to 1 if I can.
I think the overseer can be useful if he's cast early in the game. He's a lightning rod for removal though, so it's better to have a chalice to protect him from bolts and plowshares. Against decks where a creature that's immediately large is needed, Master of Etherium is better.
This deck can be strong in a meta of mostly non-blue aggro decks.
It can kill faster than mono red burn as well.
Would have to say that the worst problems I've encountered are Ethersworn Canonist (this creature is the reason I have Combust and Deathmark in the sideboard), Spell Pierce countering my mana sources, and Null Rod (this card is thankfully not played much these days).
Can get bigger later in the game.
I was still a new player that time.
I goldfished the deck several times yesterday. Results are I would say, better than expected. A resolved PiF finding Infernal Tutor through card draw means a lethal tendrils will be cast. Infernal Tutor can act like a Burning Wish that finds things mainboard. It's a matter of calculating hand size, I use Faithless Looting to discard lands in my hand to get the tutor into hellbent mode. I'm not a combo player and haven't played with a deck with LED, but I'm getting one Infernal Tutor after seeing what it can do. Ordering it from SCG if no one in my playgroup has one.
Agreed on what you said. I'm wondering if there's another sac land out there that produces BR when sacked? Those colors are what I often want to have at the start.
Personally, I didn't have a problem with the loss of Ponder in testings yesterday. Of course, others might have a different testing result.
Have to admit I was skeptical at first about PiF, because it cost 4 mana. After some tests, I do think that resolving it means a lot for the deck. I rarely fizzle when a PiF gets resolved with useful things to flashback in the graveyard.
I see.. Well, I'm going to try and obtain one Infernal Tutor from a group this week.
Won't cost much since the deck only requires one.
Also noticed that Faithless Looting seems to have replaced Ponder in the deck. Lessens the need to color change the mana, because red mana is already produced by Seething Song and Rite of Flame.
Certainly a good news for this deck.
Getting 13th out of that many players isn't easy to do.
I'm wondering how the 1 of Infernal Tutor is being used. Cast it to find a copy of a card or wait for the hellbent?
Nothing more to say except tune in your sideboard to what decks are present in your local meta. Like if you see a lot of graveyard based decks in the tournament, add one more piece of grave remover (e.g. Relic of Progenitus) when you go there a second time.
Forgot to say in my last post. You already have a good foundation on the manabase with your 4 Taiga, they're a bit expensive to acquire nowadays. Hang on to them. Zendikar fetch lands (suggesting them, because they're cheaper than the onslaught fetch lands) such as Arid Mesa and Misty Rainforest can help look for the Taigas in your deck.
Well, if you could splash white in the mana base. That opens up good creatures like Wild Nacatl 3/3 for 1 mana, Loam Lion it's a Kird ape in white, Qasali Pridemage for getting rid of dangerous equipment like Umezawa's Jitte.
I think your deck is in the right direction. Would suggest going down to only 2 Thoctars, their 3 color casting cost isn't always possible in the face of mana denial strategies. Replace 2 Thoctar with 2 Knight of the Reliquary. The knights can grow larger than thoctars, easier to cast, and can thin your deck as well.
A few pridemage is indeed needed. They will help when you face strong equipment cards.
