I quit during Onslaught block and resumed playing in Zendikar, but have a very keen interest in knowing about Mirrodin + the adventures of Glissa and friends. - To post a comment, please login or register a new account.
My decklist still perform's the same as the testing report I've posted on page 4 of this thread, win some and lose some. It can't be denied that fizzles do happen, but I'm still able to find a Tendrils or ETW often enough that I don't feel that having only 4 win conditions (3 Tendrils 1 ETW) is a problem.
The maindeck protection has it's uses, I feel vulnerable without them because most of the decks that I go against these days have disruption like Reanimator and Stoneblade. About Duress.. I find it more useful than IoK because it gets FoW and Mindbreak Trap (can be a serious problem if the opponent is not silenced or duressed before casting a Tendrils). Problem cards that Duress can't touch are handled by other cards in the sideboard.
4 Lotus Petal
4 Rite of Flame
4 Dark Ritual
4 Cabal Ritual
Mana fixers
4 Chromatic Star
4 Chromatic Sphere
4 Manamorphose
Draw
4 Ponder
4 Preordain
4 Sign in Blood
3 Tendrils of Agony
1 Empty the Warrens
Protection
2 Duress
1 Orim's Chant
1 Silence
Lands
4 Ebon Stronghold
4 Geothermal Crevice
4 Ancient Spring
4x Echoing Truth
4x Combust - can kill a Canonist protected by countermagic, and Teeg as well
3x Hurkyl's Recall
2x Ray of Revelation
2x Autumn's Veil
@Jin15
Needing only one B seems to be better, 1B is more usable by a multicolor deck than BB.
Infernal Contract requires a little change to the main deck to be effective. I have 4 protection cards main, usually try to Duress / Silence someone before trying to use IC. My build doesn't have Burning Wish, so it's the 4 BW slots that are occupied by the protection spells. Sulfur Vents are also replaced with Ebon Stronghold for easier B mana production.
Oh and lastly, I've had a little learning experience in playing the deck.
Thank you. I understand it more clearly now.
It went like this.. It's the second game, I have 2 Rite of Flame in hand, played the first Rite while making a gesture that I'm not yet passing priority. My opponent tries to sneak in an Extirpate on my Rite. I argued that she can't do it since I have priority. Who's right?
Additional question, if for example I casted the 2 Rite of Flame and then she Extirpates targetting Rite of Flame, how much mana do I get from the two Rite? Do I get four R? Please help.
Congratulations on your good finish. Must have been hard to live through the discard and wasteland on Round 3, but the deck simply came through.
I guess that's true, an opponent could wait for the Infernal Contract / Cruel Bargain and counter it. However, I also believe that against non-control decks or decks that only have Misstep as counter (example: Mono R Goblins adding misstep), resolving an IC won't be too difficult. Drawing 4 cards from a single spell reduces fizzle rate.
That's one fun aspect of this deck. They wonder what you're playing because of the lands.
I think that's pretty decent result for a first live tournament. Congratulations!
Nice, you were able to 2-0 a Folk deck.
At the last parts of a tournament, the fatigue factor is already there.
Meddling Mage is almost non-existent (in my meta at least), I would have done the same in suspecting a Canonist instead of a mage coming from a UW deck.
That's true, I rely more on black. The BBB of IC isn't really much of a problem, just takes some practice filtering mana with Manamorphose and artifacts. The 4 ES whose sac ability produces BB helps too. Your suggestion certainly looks ok, but Meditate is not a budget card. I can't afford it anymore. The deck already works fine for me anyway.
@FlippyDoo
There's no more room in the deck for those.
I've decided to cut Sulfur Vent from the lands.
4 Lotus Petal
4 Rite of Flame
4 Dark Ritual
4 Cabal Ritual
Draw
4 Chromatic Star
4 Chromatic Sphere
4 Ponder
4 Manamorphose
4 Infernal Contract
4 Preordain
2 Gitaxian Probe
3 Tendrils of Agony
1 Empty the Warrens
Graveyard Recursion
2 Noxious Revival
Lands
4 Ebon Stronghold
4 Geothermal Crevice
4 Ancient Spring
Please note that these were done all alone by myself.
There's no opponent to counter rituals or destroy land with Wasteland.
Test 1: On turn 3 I sac two Geothermal Crevice, produce BBGG , Manamorphose GG into BR . So my mana is now BBBR . Cast some rituals to add more mana to mana pool and cast an Infernal Contract which draw some Lotus Petals which I used to cast Ponder and then Preordain. To make a long story short, the deck simply went off like it's on autopilot and storm for 36 damage. That amount of damage is something I've never reached before. Resolved two IC on this test. Ok, test one more time..
Test 2: Sacrifice a lone Ancient Spring on turn 2 and proceed to go off with the help of Rituals. ... .... ... storm count not yet lethal... ... ... put back a Cabal Ritual on top of library with Noxious Revival, draw the Cabal Ritual with IC, cast Cabal and some other spells drawn with IC. Did 26 damage with Tendrils.
@Sverrath
Yeah, my current list has Ponder, Preordain, and Sign in Blood. It's that way because I don't have any IU. Though after receiving my order from SCG, I would make it Ponder, Preordain and Infernal Contract. With the addition of Infernal Contract, I don't feel comfortable anymore on having IU. Must keep the mana curve for other draw spells as low as possible, since there's a 3 mana draw spell added to the deck.
And I agree with you on Ponder vs Preordain, I prefer seeing Preordain (espescially while in the process of starting the combo) because it puts unneeded cards at the bottom. Have both of them right now in the deck though, so I just have to appreciate Ponder's benefits as well.
@Merque
That also seems good, but I would prefer to really increase the B production by having 4 ES. Haven't tested the Wish version of this deck, so I can't really give personal opinion on it.
Four cards is certainly better than two. The life payment is a little scary, but that's what testing is for.
4 Preordain
4 Infernal Contract
What I'm thinking carefully now is what sac land to replace with Ebon Stronghold to help with casting the triple B of Infernal Contract. Each sac land has a purpose in this deck, so it's not easy to decide.
Geothermal Crevice - in testings. I sometimes use the BG for Manamorphose if my opponent has managed to deal with my sources for red mana.
Sulfur Vent - this land may seem unimportant because it's sac ability doesn't produce B.. But it provides R for starting Rite of Flame, blue for Ponder, and of course the RU can be Manamorphosed into BB or whatever color is needed.
Ancient Spring -this is the land I'm thinking of replacing with Ebon Stronghold. The only downside is losing a W source for Silence. There would still be 12 remaining white sources though (Petal, Star, Sphere), or I could just replace all the Silence with Duress in the sideboard.
Wow, so Infernal Contract is also draw 4 cards.
Thanks for suggesting, going to add a playset of it on my next purchase from SCG. Also have to decide which sacland to replace with Ebon Stronghold. With my current list, I've been getting results like the ones I've posted on the previous page. Things might get better by adding Infernal Contracts. And if it doesn't get better, I'm pretty sure some other deck could use a card that draws four cards, so it's not a waste of money at all.
And thanks also to Merque for getting the conversation about cards that draw 4 cards started.
I would suggest replacing War Mammoth with some Loxodon Hierarch . You gain life and the Hierarch is bigger.
Would also like to suggest replacing the two Luminarch Ascensions with two Behemoth Sledge. Gains you life, and makes any elephant much more threatening. You can just gain back life to neutralize the damage that flying creatures deal to you.
@Merque
The 4 card draw of Cruel Bargain looks strong, but the BBB cc might be a problem.
And it's also not a budget card anymore, so it's probably better for it to be tested (proxied) first.
I still believe 4 finishers main deck is the right number, that way I only get one or no finishers (easier to start the sequence with more cantrips and mana acceleration) in opening hand most of the time. Drawing 2 or more Tendrils in opening hand often causes me to mulligan because it means there's less cantrips and mana acceleration cards there.
