I quit during Onslaught block and resumed playing in Zendikar, but have a very keen interest in knowing about Mirrodin + the adventures of Glissa and friends. - To post a comment, please login or register a new account.
First of all, congratulations on your win.
If you don't mind, can you post some more details on how you defeated those decks?
And did you encounter anyone using Null Rod?
Mox Opals are also a bit expensive. The deck can work without them, but it's still better to have at least 2 or 3.
I use Shrapnel Blast instead of Fling. With a lot of artifact removal in legacy, a large artifact creature isn't guaranteed to be present on your side of the board. Having an artifact land to sacrifice for Shrapnel Blast is an easier requirement.
And if your meta is full of people using Daze and Force of Will...
Fling gets countered = you lose a large creature, since most likely you will use a large one for max damage. A small creature with a Cranial Plating on it can be flinged for a lot of damage - though by my experience, people tend to have Pithing Needle for plating on Game 2.
Shrapnel Blast gets countered = only lose an artifact land, a Springleaf Drum or a small artifact creature. Because Shrapnel Blast always deals 5 damage, not required that you sacrifice a big artifact creature.
I suggest having some removals for their lords.
Focus on getting rid of Merrow Reejeray and Coralhelm Commander.
My deck runs 4 Galvanic Blast main, and has 2 Pyroblast and 2 Red Elemental Blast in the sideboard for game 2 against them. Which is usually enough to handle a merfolk deck. Having 4 blasts in sideboard is necessary because there's an abundance of blue men in my meta. Countering Hurkyl's Recall with a red blast is crucial. Merfolk only become slightly hard for my deck if they go first with a good hand.
For sideboard, I suggest removing the Enforcer and another card. Replace them with 2 Pithing Needle. Needle stops Goblin Charbelcher, Jace, Elspeth, Aether Vial, etc.
And I also suggest having different kinds of graveyard remover. 1 Pithing Needle from your opponent will stop all of your Relic of Progenitus.
Perhaps we'll see in the next few weeks if Tezz is worth the money, I noticed that his card is already expensive. To be fair, his first and second abilities are rather strong. Looking at top 5 cards of library and possibly getting the plating that I need, or turning a harmless drum into a menacing 5/5 can cause problems for an opponent.
Though I have to emphasize on his mana cost, five mana is needed to play around Daze. And the problem situation that could arise from needing both black and blue mana, like have 4 mana but one color is missing because it got hit by wasteland or some other artifact destruction spell.
You're welcome.
Sorry, I can't comment about Glimpse. It's because my Affinity deck is red oriented. With the battle plan being to try and deal fast damage and finish off someone with direct blast. Which actually worked against some people at the last tournament that I attended.
So far, my opinion on Tezzeret would be if it's actually possible to cast him? Given that my current meta is full of wastelands. Currently watching this thread to see if someone would be succesful in a tournament using the new Tezzeret.
I suggest reading this article.
This is the first time I've seen an affinity deck that has Academy Ruins. Can be rather strong, act like a Volrath's Stronghold for affinity, assuming your opponent doesn't remove or somehow disable it. I see the 3 Executioner's Capsule from the sideboard going pretty well with the ruins, Tarmogoyf will not be able to stick around for long on the other side of the board.
Just a small suggestion. Instead of 3 Tormod's Crypt, it's better to have three different grave remover. For example, have 1 Nihil Spellbomb, 1 Ravenous Trap, and 1 Tormod's Crypt. Because 1 Pithing Needle from your opponent will stop all 3 Crypts, having different grave removers solves that problem.
Ok, I was simply telling what happened at the tournament. The cards that caused victories (or helped cause) were thopter, plating (mvp of the day), blasts, frogmite, champion, and an enforcer. I did not say that Disciple is an overall bad card for the deck, what I mean is that he was not able to do much help at the tournament day. No one I faced used mass artifact removal at the times that I had disciple in play. And he never met his tag team partner (Ravager).
There are times that Disciple is indeed useful, but those times did not happen during the day of the tournament.
1. Thopter with plating.
2. Frogmite with plating.
3. Shrapnel Blast 4th or 5th turn.
4. Galvanic Blast directly to the player, after his life total was weakened by Etched Champion that he can't Stp.
5. Myr Enforcer with plating.
Almost defeated an Ichorid player by saccing almost all to a Ravager and give the counters to Champ. My opponent won, but it's just one more turn before the giant Etched Champion got him.
Disciple hardly contributed anything, except one match where he made someone lose 2 life because 2 Mox Opal went to the grave.
I'm keeping an open mind on the pest as well. But for me it's not just turn 1 Ravager that's important, having a turn 1 Cranial plating is just as good. Against decks that likes to counter a lot, me going first means that the only thing they can use to stop the turn 1 plating is Force of Will. And doing turn 1 Ravager / Plating is only possible with Memnite / Thopter + Mox + Artifact land. Getting the plating out early also lessens the chance that it will be discarded by a Hymn to Tourach (there are some people using The Gate in my meta).
Will find something else to cut for it.
EDIT: Thinking of -3 Springleaf Drum +3 Pest. Wastelands would be deadlier without drums, but the extra damage from the pests might be worth it. Going to test once I get some pests
If you will face NO Bant, Zoo, and Elves (combo, aggro, or any other variant). Perish is effective, espescially against elves.
Against NO Bant, Perish is the card that can save you if they manage to have an early Progenitus, just hope it doesn't get countered.
Looking forward to seeing the report if you will use Affinity.
