2019 Holiday Exchange!

A New and Exciting Beginning

The End of an Era
  • posted a message on Gentlemen, Online MagicTG doesn't work and here is why.
Bruh. The introduction of formats was specifically to identify limitations on cards. I've been there when it used to be the Wild Wild West of cards. It wasn't very fun. Back then, they had this thing called ante, and it made playing a huge risk. Are you gonna walk away with less cards?

At no point has playing Magic been about who and what cards can be played, except around a kitchen table where it is a friendly gentleman's agreement about what can be brought. If you're looking for the kitchen table experience, Arena will never be it. I understand not liking playing against certain cards, but the majority are going to bring what wins. If you don't have an answer for those cards, then, yes, you're gonna lose and lose a lot. Arena forces you to be part of the meta, just like any other format.

At this point, after reading several of your threads, I think your expectations are way, way weird. Just accept that online magic isn't going to be your happy table experience where you can dictate what not to play against. I highly doubt wizards is going to change.

Grant1 gave me quite the gift yesterday in the mail! Thank you! These will be making their way into my 5 Color EDH deck. Yes, it is made entirely out of Christmas altered Cards (or will be, once I get that magic 99). Grin

Off mine go! I'm sending out 8 alters for someone's enjoyment.

Hints? Is that what I heard?

    Well:

    That's a colossus of a snowman.
    Oko was here.
    And finally.....
    Snow better place than home!

I'm excited! I loved the alters this year especially. I hope you do too, mystery person who receives them!

Not having to do a Master's Thesis this year, so heck yeah I'm in. I was so sad to have missed it last year.

Ah, man. This thread hasn't hit upon Long.deck yet. I can't do a description of this beast justice. Check out Stephen Menendien's write up on SCG.

Look at it here. This deck was a monster.

There's a lot of coverage of the legacy and vintage championships in the archives from WoTC, as well as looking at The Mana Drain in there. It just takes a bit to sort.

Love that as a recycler for Jump-Start and works well with surveil. Can see this being run in a Dimir Shell to recharge things in Standard. Not super powerful, but definitely fine.

So, WPN just sent out their e-mail, announcing this set. Not a whole heck of a lot to add, other than the booster boxes will be 36 count, which makes it even more different than a Masters set. Might even keep the price around $3.99?

  • posted a message on Bought LP Beta, got a signed one.
I've never really understood the idea by getting an artist to sign it as "damaged." It's not like it fully kills the card to the point of structural integrity. Also, depending on the size of the signature, I would rate it as LP or MP. It's not worse than the marking from a GP draft most of the time. Personally, I love getting artist signatures and value cards with a signature moreso because of the work into getting them that way.

As for your situation, I'd have to say that you'd be in your rights to write a nicely worded e-mail letting them know that you did receive a card in a condition different than what you expected. Overall? I don't think it's a huge deal if the card is really in LP condition. And really, how often are you going to find a signed Beta card? I'd feel lucky, honestly.

The one that has my artwork on it. Probably will never happen, but a dream card's a dream, right?

Not gonna lie, I've put a priority into getting old-border foils of new cards that came out in judge foils. Love 'em love 'em love 'em. I'm sure they could do a box topper series akin to the Ultimate ones doing it. It's a lot less about collating at that point. I agree that Winter Orb foiled would be SOOOOOO awesome. I'd like to see some of the Legends foiled out (I'm looking at you Dakkon Blackblade).

Azorius: Definitely detain. So good in both constructed and limited. Addendum is cool, but ultimately limited. I wish they did more with forecast. It was very interesting.

Dimir: Transmute. Surveil is definitely solid, though. Tutors are always stupid good. Cipher is cool, but ultimately difficult to pull off. Kinda like haunt in Orzhov.

Rakdos: Spectacle seems solid. Unleash at least sets up interesting play decisions. Hellbent isn't a great ability. I hate not having cards in hand.

Gruul: Bloodthirst always felt awful to me, because of the tension of trying to break through a stalemate to get the bigger creature. Never would get exactly what you wanted. I think Riot takes this one, Honestly.

    Selesnya: Convoke, definitely convoke.

Orzhov: Extort. Love it. Haunt was interesting to use, but difficult to deal with. The effects are really useful if you can time it. Afterlife is...obvious? Good for limited.

Golgari: Dredge, dredge, dredge, dredge. I prefer undergrowth to scavenge, as scavenge plays against the graveyard re-use the Golgari already established in the original Ravnica.

Simic: Evolve is solid. I personally liked graft in its ability to shift the +1/+1 counters, as there was some interesting effects that could happen. Adapt is kinda meh. Wish they had reprinted Evolve.

Izzet: Overload was almost entirely useful in the cards. I think it even is solid from Vorthos point of view. I enjoy replicate moreso than jump-start.

Boros: Mentor is definitely good. Battalion came out wonderfully, but would've liked to see it more like battlecry. I don't think they needed both. Radiance could have been so, so interesting.

  • posted a message on Magic ethics question: Letting opponent play slowly when a drawed match favors you?
Look, I don't think you're required to tell your opponent about time. I don't think it's ethically wrong to give your opponent any advantage they don't need. If your opponent didn't seem under duress outside the norm, I don't think you have any need to give them playing tips.

However, how did your opponent playing W/R Boros Monarch end up playing a BBB card? And a rare at that in Pauper? There's some worse ethical things going on here than slow play.
