I'm also inspired to build a land destruction lock out deck that focuses on Acidic Slimes / Brutalizer Exarch / Beast Within / Mimic Vats / Heartless Summoning / Creeping Renaissance. I don't know if it will be good but considering how LD has been marginalized recently I could see it sneaking a win or two
Brutalizer Exarch - Continue the LD theme and rid yourself of bothersome planeswalkers for a measly 3G or Search up that Sun Titan / Whatever
Passes the multiple copy test as well
Entomber Exarch - Distress or Return dead combo piece for 2cmc
Chancellor of the Tangle - This is a major reach but he does enable a Turn one Heartless and is much more reasonable to cast at 3-5 mana than at 7
I think the previous poster had it correct that Gitaxian Probe is this cards best friend. Being able to pay 2 life and draw a card is really good card advantage from a standard viewpoint.
Speaking of Standard, being able to use all of your burn to clear the board for Koth and then use this to whip it into your opponent seems a solid gameplan.
So Mindcrank and Bloodchief Ascension form an infinite combo provided they can be activated, correct? I won't say it is good but with opponents using phybrid mana and the proliferate mechanic it may just be quick enough. Volt Charge can activate in a turn as long as it had a single counter on it, also may work with a Liliana's Caress or Mill deck independent of each other.
Also it would be Lose/Gain 2 -> Put 2 cards to GY -> Lose/gain 4 -> Put 4 cards to GY etc.
Caged sun seems like it was made for mono-U architect deck. Fetchable with Treasure Mage, gives your dudes +1/+1, gives you more mana for shenanigans.
Actually I think it really slots into a U/B Grand Architect deck. Caged Sun does support the use of dual lands (as long as they tap for U) and black gives you some nice things like Creeping Tar Pit and Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas. Either Lord will take the Tar Pit from being a good card to pounding in 4 (kill Jace even with +1) or 5 damage.
Include things like Go for the Throat, Lodestone Golem, IoK, and BSZ to seal the deal. Might be fun to play at least, I'm going to have to try it out.
I know there is another similar post, didn't feel like sidetracking their thread.
So anyways, Always been a fan of the Kiln Fiend / Distortion Strike combo, so when the LGS started a pauper tournament I knew exactly what I wanted to play.
Round 1: 2-1 against U/R Unblockable
Similar deck but using Riverfall Mimic, Noggle Bandit, Cloud of Dominus, Magefire Wings and Sigil of Sleep. To be perfectly honest if he had added Terramorphics to his deck it would have been much more likely for him to win. Land screwed twice out of Red.
Round 2: 0-2 Against R/B affinity
Ugh, this match was very uphill the entire way. Artifact lands and Atog make an essentially unboltable creature. Massive swings, Disciple of the Vault, Ichor Wellspring, Galvanic Blast. I had one decent game where he was stuck at 2 lands but he still came back. I need to aggressively side board this matchup.
Round 3: 2-1 Against Mono Red Burn
Easy enough, after the first game I just sat on my hands while he dumped his. Once I was secure in knowing my creatures weren't about to get shocked off the board I won easily.
Round 4: 0-2 Against W/r Weenie
Didn't draw well, Burn for all my creatures, overrun by squadron Hawks using slyvok lifestaff. Unpleasant but my deck did put up a little bit of a fight.
Made it into top 4 (small LGS) and played the 2nd undefeated person of the night. (1-1 draw with my 4th matchup)
Round 5: 2-0 Against Soul Sister White Weenie
He didn't draw a single journey, I absolutely crushed him. Nice to play a deck that doesn't instantly remove every single creature played. Swung with a 12/2 Double Striking Kiln fiend to end game one. Game 2 Distortion strike both a Ruinous Minotaur and Kiln Fiend for the win.
So this was made of my fairly small, irregular collection. What cards should I add in order to increase my consistency or make it to the late game where I can explode and still protect creatures?
So with the introduction of the recent set I've fallen in love with proliferate and -1/-1 counters, This doesn't extend into infect though it may be necessary in order to remain relevant. I think the best way to maximize proliferates usefulness isn't to find lower cost ways to do it but instead to get the most bang for your mana buck.
The purpose of this deck is to abuse the -1/-1 counters that have been dumped liberally on Black piece of the color pie. A few of the card combinations that caught my eye.
Carnifex Demon + Black Sun's Zenith: Carnifex amplifies the power of this already potent sweeper, it also solves the problem of how to put -1/-1 counters onto Carnifex without it being entirely one sided. That being said, a resolved Carnifex will kill titans, shrink Gideon, shrug off BSZ like nothing and all at instant speed.
Phyrexian Crusader + Sword of Feast and Famine / Sword of Body and Mind: He carries them very well. A 4/4 first strike infect with pro from 4 out the 5 colors is a force to be reckoned with. Plus he survives red sweepers, journeys, and matches up well against Boros.
Deck Basics:
Black: Black Sun's Zenith: Sweeper that can be proliferated, gets around every kind of immunity. Only allies and Melira's Keepers have a chance. Skithyrx, the Blight Dragon: Deals Infect damage, has haste, can regenerate. Sounds good to me. Carnifex Demon: Will kill titans on the block, Shrugs off your sweeper. Phyrexian Crusader:Survives sweepers, is a very good wall, not bad on the attack either.
Colorless: Contagion Clasp: Colorless Removal and Proliferate Sphere of Suns: Mana ramp if the deck moves into multicolor. Everflowing Chalice: With proliferate it can get obscene quickly.
Swords: Do I really need to explain? Core Prowler: Makes that BSZ even better, blocks for 3 infect, gives you a good etg trigger on opposing sweepers. Can wear a sword fairly well.
The problem I currently have is deciding which color combo to follow:
Nest Invader instead of Overgrown Battlement: Makes a token, provides 2 bodies to block or Sacrifice to Eldrazi Monument or to activate BMA, Can ramp mana though not as much. Downsides are that it doesn't have the consistent mana ramp of the wall and it is a one shot effect.
Birds of Paradise for Llanowar elves: You don't have elf synergy. BoP has evasion which makes swinging in on overwhelming stampede or triggering BMA that much easier. Also relevant if you splash any colors (even for sideboarding!)
Mitotic Slime survives Day of Judgement and makes more tokens for you to drop and OS or EM on. Terastodon can destroy 3 lands (Valakut), 3 Planeswalkers, or any troublesome artifacts / enchantments. It can also read pay 6GG and sacrifice 3 lands: Put 18 power on 4 bodies on the field. Any of your mass pumps just increases the power .(BMA: 38 P/T EM: 22 P/T OS: 54 P/T)
Also you are mono green beatdown, Why Wurmcoil Engine over Primeval Titan? I understand the token angle but you can fetch man lands with primeval titan, You could main board Khalni Garden and get that many tokens for just dropping him.
^
)(
That would certainly be a confusing fetch choice "Wait... not mountains, Valakut, or man lands. huh?"
Thopter is also a really good break against the infect deck archetype in limited. While at rare it won't be in most decks the bounce and tokens are quite the stop.
Drop Big Thopter
Block Infect creature (who cares about counters)
Return to Hand
Put lil' Thopters in to play
Drop Big Thopter again or save until you need to block again.
Chump with thopters or use them to gang block a big creature.
Maybe this is the stuff there talking about when promising ways to handle infect?
I want to say before I post any lists that I am semi-new to MTG and still have a lot to learn. I'm getting a lot better feel for cards and their relative power levels and worth (Case in point I used to think that Goblin Guide was a bad card and Pentarch Ward was good) but I'm still a very poor deckbuilder. Mostly it revolves around card numbers and curve development. I've had so many ideas and potential lists that had ended up in the trash because I could not decide whether 1/2/3/4 was the right number of cards to include. So many of these potential lists will be short cards or have a 0 in front of the card or missing entire sections, I'll try to address my concerns in each concept but their may be some piecing together to do in order to make a real .dec
So on to why I'm even making these. I recently moved home from a town with a very active and (absurdly) powerful meta to my hometown where the nearest card shop is almost 45 mins. drive away. Most of my friends are the competitive nerd types so once I brought some rudimentary decks over and taught them to play it wasn't hard to get a game going. The problem is that none of them are the least bit interested in buying or going out of there way to procure cards despite having good ideas for what they want to play.
I plan to surprise them by making their (wildest) dreams come true and bringing the various things they discussed with me to life so we can play something more fun than the lopsided precon vs. DoTP vs. my limited card collection. And without further ado here are the deck ideas.
[R/B Rakdos Deck Discard]
This deck is for the player who learned with the DotP xbox game (Total Xbox nerd), he played a combined Nissa deck but folded to sweepers so many times it was just frustrating to play. He really enjoyed the Black deck and I hope I can make one that is more fun to play / competitive. I have 0 idea what kind of creatures to put in here or good red lands
One of my concepts, I'm 45% Johnny 45% Timmy and 10% Spike, I like winning by cheating large creatures into play and swinging for unavoidably large amounts of damage.
Anyways this deck focuses around one of my favorite green cards. IMPROMPTU RAID. Along with tutors it can say: Play any creature in your deck for 4 to 6 mana. Leads to lots of Eldrazi shenanigans Haha. Anyways here is the decklist.
This is for my friend Lockstar, former Yugioh player (don't worry he is recovered), He really digs monoblack decks and especially card advantage. So this deck is fairy straight forward. Probably the simplest of the bunch.
Another deck for me, This one is probably the worst of the bunch. Remember how I said I love cheating things into play. Well Master Transmuter is another card that I love for that. This deck abuses Metalcraft with Artifact lands and has plenty of Card advantage. Missing tons of cards from every spot, I must say my knowledge of comboish decks and especially artifacts is terrible. Mostly missing good card advantage and creatures and noncreature artifacts that are actually good. So most of what makes the deck work.
I know that was a lot of text and even more newbishness to trudge through. I appreciate the reading and eagerly await your suggestions and comments. I can't wait to make all these and get everyone playing something they want o. Also if I could get some help balancing em that would be cool too (that is probably hard to do, even wizards has trouble balancing 2 duel decks let along a whole playgroup lol) Thanks (also preemptive TL;DR)
This deck is the result of buying a bunch of the DD:EvT and New SoM cards. With metalcraft being profoundly "meh" for the time being I was thinking that the Artifact lands are the best way to meet the conditions, making the ability go from late game boost to early game crushing.
It works using the Red Spells to control early to mid game creatures with counterspell backup for the larger ones. From there it drops trinket mages to tutor up a toolbox and beatdowns with man lands or equipped mages or pumped overseers. Still need fatties and big spells though.
Now I understand that this is far from complete and it is the creatures and artifacts that I am having trouble with. Any suggestion on what I can add or subtract or straight up conjure would be much appreciated.
White really wouldn't be an issue. Considering Noble Hierarchs produce it and Primeval Titan can tutor any land. And that Cultivate searches for it as well.
I think I like Worldly Tutor a little more than Congregation due to the insanely low cost (which means I could do tricky stuff like cast it in response to my activation of improptu the turn after I drop it.)
4x Myr Superion
4x Priest of Urabrask
4x Solemn Simulacrum
4x Phyrexian Rager
3x Acidic Slime
3x Inferno Titan
3x Perilous Myr
4x Heartless Summoning

I'm also inspired to build a land destruction lock out deck that focuses on Acidic Slimes / Brutalizer Exarch / Beast Within / Mimic Vats / Heartless Summoning / Creeping Renaissance. Chancellor of the Tangle - This is a major reach but he does enable a Turn one Heartless and is much more reasonable to cast at 3-5 mana than at 7
Skinrender - BB 3 -1/-1 counters and a 2/2 body
I must say this is the card I'm most excited for.
Speaking of Standard, being able to use all of your burn to clear the board for Koth and then use this to whip it into your opponent seems a solid gameplan.
Something along the lines of
Turn 1: Mountain, Gitaxian Probe, Shock (either 1 drop or their face)
Turn 2: Mountain, Incinerate
Turn 3: Mountain, Volt Charge or Shock/2drop or Slagstorm
Turn 4: Mountain, Koth of the Hammer, Beat Face, (Maybe another Probe?)
Turn 5: Mountain, Past in Flames, Probe, Volt Charge, Volt Charge or Tezzeret's Gambit
Turn 6: Koth Ultimate or whatever you drew
Just my thoughts on the matter
Red
Volt Charge
Lightning Bolt / Galvanic Blast
Slagstorm / Pyroclasm
Blue
Tezzeret's Gambit
Mental Misstep
Jace the Mindsculptor
Black
Bloodchief Ascension
Despise
Psychological Surgery
Colorless
Everflowing Chalice
Tumble Magnet
Sphere of Suns
Multicolor
Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas
That isn't all of them but I think it may make a good shell. Can be tuned towards discard or mill or just Drain and Gain artifact control.
Also it would be Lose/Gain 2 -> Put 2 cards to GY -> Lose/gain 4 -> Put 4 cards to GY etc.
Actually I think it really slots into a U/B Grand Architect deck.
