Wanted to bring up dromoka's command again quickly (I mentioned it a few pages ago).

I've been playing a lot this week on MTGO, with 2 dromoka's command in an otherwise pretty normal build. I have been continuously impressed with how powerful its been.

Just played a league where command provided me with three separate game-breaking blowouts. Making a smuggler's copter a 4/4 in response to a bolt, while simultaneously fighting and killing a TITI about to flip. Or edicting UW off a dsphere to free two voices. Or completely wrecking my taxes opponent's combat math.

I know these seem like Christmas-land scenarios... but they keep happening. Against good opponents on real decks.

I know it seems "too cute", or just less consistent than helix or path. I'm not going to claim I'm correct (might just be getting lucky). But next time you cast one of those other spells, stop for a second and see if dromoka's would have been any good. Let me know if you have results either way.

Command got way... way less good when push was printed. Thats my concern. Im not saying its not good... i love modal cards. But it had 3 modes in the past. Enchant sac is a .5, fight is a 1, counter is a .5, removal counter was 1.

Push and path are now the bulk of removal, bolt isnt as unanimous as it was. So its now got "2.5 modes" 1, .5, .5, .5. Its not as good as it used to be. The modes arent aging well.

Atarkas for example has 3 solid modes all the time and will age well because they are good in a vacuum not meta dependent. Cryptic has 4 and ages well. Same with abraid even.

Zoo can beat Jund. You just have to be packing the heat a.k.a the bizness.
leta be real... its still not a good matchup. You can get close, but you cant get extra favorable

Try something like my build i posted earlier. The more sticky and good vs 1 for 2 removal the better your matchup gets

In legacy I played one due to back to basics and price of progress. In modern there is only path and blood moon (and pain) so I still think theres really no reason to run it. I did in really red decks like blitz

So aside from the list I put out, which I still think is still pretty good, I said Id put out a thalia version... but I keep thinking about doing it and then running away... because what deck do you do with thalia? Small with aggro beats and leverage thalias ability to mess up the opponent to speed your aggro?

I can see that, its a low cmc, that messes with combo and removal... but then Im depriving myself from that 20 20 20 mix and missing burn...

Or I can do value creature town and basically run the same build as the renegade, but with less burn. I already have thalias in that board, so its not really a big change.

    I dunno!

Probably not. I dont have MTGO or anything anymore, only physical cards.

I think if you like you can swap choke for blood moon, but Id add a forest cut a horizon canopy for it

Nope! But bbelfibg into 5 damage seems dope. I think the issue with domain zoo is that if you want to use stuff like sideboard counters or discard, and snapcaster mage you shouldnt go bbelf. You probably go rhino instead.

But you can probably be more aggressive. Maybe running might of alara sometime.

  • posted a message on The notion of a 'best deck' in the format and a new space for new Modern players
I agree a lot of players seem too look for the best deck, or think there is a best deck. But I think its a mindset (mostly from standard) that SHOULDNT exist in modern. It takes the average player to say to new players or old players stuck in this mindset, that it isnt true.

Modern has no best deck, but has trending decks. If you out time into mastering a deck, you will be successful.

I personally do this, and I think most players do. It was pros who didn't; disliking the massive time sink modern testing is and how theres no "One deck to win. But time has shown the pros opinions HAVE been drowned out by average players who get that.

RUG seems too soft to non interactive decks. If you expect an entire room full of fair decks it's fantastic and buries you, but that just seems soft. You definitely need to hit a pairing lottery in long tournaments.

UW Control seems most able to handle a variety of things. Field of Ruins and Spreading Seas is incredibly annoying if you're a three color deck.

Zoo beats most control decks, but Ive beaten that one hard. Zoo is the fairest deck of them all, but I'm undefeated in my testing vs Rug jace. And with Dredge, but thats an unfair deck.

Both are still to your point. both are pretty uninteractive. But one is fair uninteractive.

Heres what I am running. Been working great. actually having a 50/50 matchup with Jund/k/rock, and Have only lost 1 round against all jace decks (midrange and control, around 30 or so control decks.)

This deck does not lose to any removal decks really. Ive beaten pretty much all blood moon destroy lands decks too. Been over preforming. I think if you are going rallier, this is the best version you can run. I'll work on a thalia build next... though Atarkas command build is also pretty cool in my head.

Voice and ooze 2-1 can be swapped, but not noticeable reason to do it in my testing. Probably can run bloodmoon too over choke. Theres just enough blue right now that its basically one sided blood moon. Id switch a horizon into a forest.

Overall, the deck is super solid. Tier 2, 1.5? Not 1. Please take it out for a spin. Comment if you want any questions on this build answered. I'm about 100 rounds in now.

Great to see you back in the Zoo again! Even more so that you like the list Smile Enabling Renegade Rallier the way this deck does feels so good! I'm actually very exited to play vs jund now. I know Grixis is a breeze, but we might need some tech v.s. tokens. (Pyromancer / Souls) though the trample at our disposal gets us a long way.

@Lantern, why don't you play Ghost Quarter?

Never been a huge fan of it to be honest. Also turn 4ing it always seemed pretty late. I like having my mana more, so horizon canopy seemed better. I actually faced very little tron or pyro

I'd still like to fit at least 1 Domri in the list, maybe on the sideboard.

    EDIT:

There's another 5-0 from that Tribal list I posted on the last page with Kird Apes, Loam Lions and Mantis Riders.

I was going to say that right now I think anything aggressive can 5-0. This isnt to take away from his accomplishments. Its really hard to lose to a jace control deck if you have a grip full of 1-2 mana threats against counters and expensive removal. Especially because people right now are playing jace REALLY baddly and using him turn 4 to be a 4 mana bounce spell or brainstorm before it dies. More below.

That guy went a grand total of 12-7 he's a friend of mine. He doesn't like the list.

Hey cool. tell him congrats for me. I suspect it has to be really good vs removal or jace decks, but can easily out paced. Thats why I dont like kird ape and loam lion

I'm not seeing Cryptics in these lists, its normally ramp (Noble) into threats, into BBE or Jace and then just an avalanche of advantage.
Online Im still destroying this. They have serious mana problems, Late, non cascaded AVs are horrible and there are some really bad cascade targets. Ive just really unimpressed by it.

Just to jump in as a long time zoo player... you still ran canonists and thalias in zoo, even back when BBElf was legal. The power levels were high enough to justify it.

Not picking a side here, just pointing it out
