    I really thought that centaur healer pulled a ton of weight. He just gave you a lot of time against rakdos.

    Also, the selesnya rare was crazy good. So was the 1 mana guy who makes a 3/3 centaur as it turns on all of your populate cards. The selesnya guildmages were great.

    I've been looking over the spoilers and thinking about which cards may be useful to add to this deck post RTR. To be honest, I'm not entirely sure how the metagame will shift- if it shifts based on return to ravnica. I do believe that abrupt decay does have a slot within this deck. The ability to reliably kill delver or goyf against RUG on turn 1 or 2 is very useful. As is the ability to destroy counterbalance and other threats at instant speed. Even against storm, if a player plays a lion's eye diamond, and then goes to cast a second one, destroying the first lion's eye diamond in response is often a devastating blow.

    Basically, the list is tight enough that you are rarely going to just be able to jam in a 4 of of some relevant sideboard card. The mana base is actually quite strong. The reason for this is simple- we are running 25 lands and 3 life from the loams as opposed to 20 lands with no life from the loams. Our mox diamonds also help out a lot.

    Storm combo (high tide included) matchups result in me boarding in:
    rule of law, arcane laboratory (these cards are the same, but are best off as 2 different cards because of echoing truth and cabal therapy)

    What comes out? Depends upon the exact matchup, but generally whatever is slow plus a maze of ith. Against high tide, we take out:
    2 Engineered Explosives
    1 Maze of Ith
    1 Maelstrum Pulse
    1 Umezawa's Jitte

    Against storm combo that has access to red mana (and thus empty the warrens), the 2 engineered explosives and maelstrum pulse stay in- both for their ability to kill all the goblins as well as disrupt Lion's Eye Diamonds laid early to get around chalice on 0 as well as other potential anti-disruption. If I'm not living long enough to cast jace, the mind sculptor, have life from the loam take effect, or have umezawa's jitte net me any advantage, then I cut some of those cards. If tormod's crypt becomes useful due to graveyard interactions, I'll use it.


    Against merfolk, I find myself boarding out
    4x chalice of the void

    I want to board in
    2x Wrath of God
    1x Maze of ith
    1x Dismember

    Against Goblins, My board is similar except that zealous persecution is better than dismember.

    Against Maverick, I like to go the grindy route (depending upon the build). What cards are bad in this matchup?
    Mox Diamond- this game doesn't end on turn 4 or 5 or 6 most of the time. The early land drop isnt worth the cost of a card and drawing dead cards is what really hurts you. Also, it can be disrupted by qasali pridemage and phyrexian revoker.

    Chalice of the void becomes mediocre-
    If they have cavern of souls naming human, the only card you are stopping is swords to plowshares. If they have multiple swords to plowshares in hand, i expect them to get to qasali pridemage, and then pop the chalice when they decide they need to. Without mox diamond, chalice of the void won't hit their 1 drop creature anyways, and only protects you from 4 cards in their entire deck. It isn't worthy of 4 of status, although playing one or 2 isn't bad.

    What helps us live longer:
    2 Wrath of God
    1 Zealous Persecution
    1 Maze of Ith

    Most of the time, you can get them to play into wrath of god. Especially with maze of ith as your way of stopping their primary strategy of attack with exalted creature, it often forces them to over commit- especially if they are trying to go over the top of your one stoneforge mystic, knight of the reliquary, or lingering souls.
    Zealous Pesecution This card takes out the following 4 ofs in their deck:
    Noble Hierarch, Mother of Runes, Thalia, Guardian of Thraben, as well as the following cards which may or may not see play:
    Dryad Arbor, Phyrexian Revoker, Scryb Ranger
    [CARD]
    Maze of ith[/CARD] is essentially synergistic with the other cards in that those cards pressure our opponent into playing right into a big wrath of god.

    Cards that help us grind some more:
    Elspeth, Knight Errant

    After that, its your choice to evaluate which of the following are best for your deck to have:
    1 or 2 Mox Diamond
    1 or 2 Chalice of the Void
    1 Dismember
    1 Vendilion Clique

    Note that your deck only needs a little help in terms of busting the maverick game wide open. Your opponent is likely to play around perish by laying down his white creatures but by holding back a few green ones. Knight of the reliquary is effectively the only card you really want to kill before your opponent can untap with it.


    So that covers all of the sideboard cards except for the following:
    2 Faerie Macabre
    1 Tormod's Crypt
    1 Gilded Drake

    This should be relatively straightforward:
    Dredge (faerie macabres and tormod's crypt, but no gilded drake) and reanimator (all of those come in). Why can we afford to devote so few slots to graveyard based hate?
    Because we have maindeck bojuka bog with the ability to tutor it with 4 knight of the reliquary and 2 tolaria west. The 2 scavenging ooze tend to seal the deal.

    Show and tell combo as well as burn both see us board in thalia.

    We tend to cut life from the loam in the burn matchup as hitting our land drops continuously tends to result in lethal price of progress.
    Against Show and tell, gilded drake also comes in, and we hope that our clock is fast enough.

    As for traditional blue white stoneblade:
    This is one of our best matchups. You can cut a mox diamond for an elspeth if you want the games to go grindier, and you can bring in zealous persecution to take out snapcaster mage and vendilion cliques. Maze of ith can come in to stop the equipment based beatdown. After that, your biggest problem is jace the mind sculptor and sometimes elspeth knight errant. Since Clique is good against planeswalkers, you may wish to consider bringing that in. However, lingering souls is pretty good against planeswalker as well as swords to plowshares and snapcaster mages to bring them back.

    Against esper blade: all of your mox diamonds tend to come out as this matchup is just a long grindfest. Clique is bad against lingering souls, so that is something to consider.

    Against blade matchups:
    Remember that engineered explosives as well as maelstrum pulse can clear all the spirits from lingering souls, or it can clear all the angels from entreat the angels. They have lingering souls and you have academy ruins + engineered explosives. Just be sure to play at a reasonable pace and win before time runs out when facing esper stoneblade.


    Other matchups:
    RUG delver is probably your hardest matchup. You need to stay fast and agressive and slow them down. Stopping their early creature is a huge step in the right direction. Cavern of souls as well as chalice of the void are your saviors in this matchup. I've been continuing to experiment with different board configurations to see how best to play out this matchup. Thalia may be good if you can land her early as she stops most of your opponents stuff while also stopping any X=1s your opponents may have. Just dont waste time trying to wasteland your RUG delver opponent unless you already have chalice of the void on 1 out, they missed their second land drop, and you do not need another land in order to be able to cast anything.

    Phantasmal image has potential, as does sower of temptation. Shackles seems bad in a deck with 2 islands. Plague seems unnecessary for clearing dudes when we have engineered explosives. I think that zealous persecution is probably better since it comes out of the board for more matchups.

    Also, jace is very good.

    Its exciting to see merfolk back in the metagame as uncounterable potentially turn 1 stoneforge mystic is just really good against them. Especially when we get to back it up with 2 *** out of the board that help us deal with maverick and the adjustment of 1 vindicate to 1 maelstrum pulse and the fact that our tower of the magistrates just slice through phantasmal images like no ones business.

    Also, I'll be judging in SCG buffalo. I may choose to bring the deck, and possibly my decklist to it.

    Right, the there are no 1 drops because of chalice on 1 is your gameplan against 9/10ths of the legacy decks you will ever run into.

    As for discard: The goal of both wasteland and chalice of the void (and to a lesser extent, vendilion clique) is that your opponent acquires useless cards in their hand-- dead cards. When you start running stuff like hymn to tourach or its ilk, you turn those dead cards into live cards-- which is anti-synergy.

    A perhaps more relevant thing is that the color requirements of 4 colors makes it very difficult to reliably cast any given 1 mana spell on turn 1. And a lot of these spells just do so much less if you have to wait until turn 3 (because you should always have a 2 drop worth tapping out for on turn 2) to cast them.

    Also, if you are playing mox diamond, whatever your casting should net you some serious card advantage or amazing tempo.

    Yes, but enchantress is such a tiny fraction of the metagame that I would not consider it when choosing card choices. That said, putting pernicious deed into the board to bring in in matchups where you take out mox diamond seems reasonable.

    Most of the time, games dont end if you dont have a turn 1 play. Plenty of games go well when your first play is a 2 drop on turn 2. That said, the deck has won its fair share of games with 4 card hands where I go turn 1 dark confidant or stoneforge mystic.

    But no, if your hand has turn 2 stable action and you'll be able to continue if a land gets wastelanded and/or a spell of yours gets countered, id recommend keeping it.
