I played a casual game this past friday with this deck. It was a stock list. Played against BW Humans. I don't know if my deck wasn't shuffled well or what, but my aggro/lifegain stuff was nowhere to be found. The game just DRAGGED. I started to stabilize at the end once I found my Martyr but by that time my opponent was just frustrated and we decided to move to something else. That was after over 1 hour of playing game 1. If this was a real tourney setting, I don't see how this deck can finish a 3 match round in time.
This is the 2nd/3rd time this has happened. I felt we both played pretty quick, it's just that "milling" my opponent 1 card at a time is pretty painful.
This deck can indeed be really damn slow as youre often beating them to death with hawks. BW humans or any mid-range creature deck like GW value can inevitably lead to a lot of durdling and topdecking as the martyr player will just be gaining a lot of life and casting removal while hoping to draw a threat. However, the meta currently is dominated by scapeshift, burn, storm, GDS and affinity which either lose or win quickly.
Soccer, have you tried running Elspeth Knight Errant instead of Gideon Jura? I have yet to test Gideon and I plan on doing so but I feel like Elspeth's +1 abilities are way more relevant in the deck as they can get something on the board or turn a martyr, squadron hawk, weathered wayfarer or even an ascendant (when youre under 30) into a bigger threat. I don't normally find myself needing more removal or Gideon's +2 since I have so much already and am usually at a high life total due to martyr. What are your thoughts?
So I had most of the pieces lying around and decided to build the deck. As a starting point I build the version soccer took to SCG with the exception of having flagstones (so this). Without putting too much thought into it I threw together a quick sideboard and have been playtesting with varying results.
I still have 2 slots open and am not 100% sure what to put in. I've thought about nevermore, worship, burrenton forgetender and linvala but I am still undecided. I also have thought about running little thalia and would like to hear your thoughts on that. I also threw mindcensor in there on a whim and am not sure if it is necessary. As for the maindeck, I feel like this deck sometimes has difficulties closing out the game. Oftentimes, I find myself with most of my serra ascendants exiled and having difficulty finding a threat. I like the idea of Gideon Jura or maybe Gideon ally of zendikar and elspeth but I'm not sure what I would cut for it. Kami, while kind of an awkward card helps a lot when I have a weaker hand and I am on the fence when it comes to cutting it. Having 3 o-ring effects has saved me multiple times and I also feel like I need the 4 paths and wraths.
To everyone: I'm on a three color build and can't decide: Should I main 2 Wayfarers and side extra big mana spells (Blood Baron/Elspeth/an extra Titan) or do the reverse? I feel like Wayfarer in the main gives me a chance against Tron and lets me assemble Emeria faster, but maindeck big things makes it a lock that I have a way to close out game 1. How would you folks approach that?
I think its worth a shot to maybe side one out? Weathered wayfarer is often a dead card for me. One seems alright in the mainboard but 2 is probably one too many.
Was it just a turn 3/4 loss each game?
I like blessed alliance a lot as each ability is pretty relevant. But would putting canonist or eidolon of rhetoric help the matchup? It's a shame you arent a big fan of leyline as it helps a lot against a lot of decks.
Hey,
Just first off wanted to congratulate you on your results this weekend. I would love to see how you sided out, especially against storm. Did you ever feel like 3 celestial purge was too many?
Been having a blast with a version closer to izzetmage's original list. Deck is not bad for my meta but a lot of matchups come down to topdecking and opening hands. Magus of the Moon is in there mainly there because I didn't feel like buying another Blood Moon but the cheese factor can be funny sometimes. An extra forest was added in place of Copperline Gorge mainly because fetching shocks an additional shock ended up costing me the game sometimes. I never really felt like I needed more than 1 dual land. I switched 2 communes for Grapple with the Past because often times what I was looking for was already in the grave. The only card I'm not so sure about is Legion Loyalist in place of a third Hooting Mandrills.
The JGM list is more like a burn deck whereas this deck feels more like a combo deck since you're relying on commune/gather to pick up pieces before exploding. While I've only play the Superion build extensively, I feel like the main benefit JGM's list has is that it is a little more consistent and more resilient to discard. That being said, I think the reason why JGM's list was doing so well was because people weren't expecting the temur battle rage and become immense. People at the event seemed to figure this out later and he had difficulty replicating his earlier success. The superion build, i think, does better when the surprise factor is gone. While it was a pretty nice list, I don't really expect it to be a competitive deck in the near future, but who knows.
Using a combination of myr propagator, training grounds and grand architect gets you a large amount of tokens and considerable field control. Adding cards like tempered steel and myr battlesphere for a win con and youve got a slightly feasible deck. Any ideas?
should i be running pumping creatures and enchantments? eg. the shadowmoor lieges and things like akromas memorial. Also, how many removal spells should i be running?
Hi all,
I'm new to the format and i was wondering if i could have some help with it as it is very different from other constructed formats. I was wondering what good cards are there to put in a Doran EDH deck and what type of EDH staples are there, for example i heard that Oblation is a great card in EDH as it gets rid of the general. Around how many lands should i be running? Also, how should i be looking to win? Killing him quickly and swarming the opponent with small creatures or building up a strong mana base and killing the guy with a few big finishers. All help is appreciated
