Hey I've got one more question. Anyone have any ideas of what other characters from Magic's history that never got cards that could go into the commander decks?

Thank you for the information everyone. Hopefully we'll find out soon enough. I'd heard Temur speculation and wanted to see if there was any evidence or official statement.

Hey folks. I can't really comb through the whole thread. Does anyone have good guesses to where Sarkhan's from as far as clans? I'm thinking Temur based on what little I can glean but I could be wrong.

I'm very excited to have the Aven back. I love Merfolk. I really do but I've wanted another block with Aven since Zendikar and I'm super happy to see this coming down the pipe.

Fingers crossed for ninjutsu for the Jeskai.

This seems like the best option to me. It fits flavorwise with the Japanese themed tribe. It has a lot of fans and even saw some support in supplemental products. And it plays well with creature-based combat important to both limited and constructed.

Would the Jeskai be Japanese flavored though? The design I saw looked more akin to Shaolin Monks and thus Chinese inspired. Was there other art that I missed? Ninjutsu could still theoretically be used, but perhaps not for the same reason?

Tarkir as a whole is "pan-Asian" styled.

I'm well aware of that fact. There is a similarity there to the original Avatar: The Last Airbender series in that regard. Nevertheless I was trying to point out the costuming, weaponry and even stances, seem to have more in common with Chinese and Mongolian styles. At least for this particular group. Primarily I'm looking at the robes and leg wraps.

That said, it's probably just me arguing semantics at this point. I'm curious to see what we'll get out of them since I'm hoping for either the Jeskai, or the Sultai to give us the control deck this time around (I really want to be able to play a strong control deck without White in the next format but who knows).

I guess I just like when going to new places not to have reused stuff. Morph, tho i dont really care much for the mechanic, is fine i guess, I just rather want something new for each of the clans instead of 4 of them get a cool new mechanic but oh look at that clan with it´s non-unique mehcanic.

I actually really like the idea that sometimes we get returning mechanics (just like I enjoy seeing some cards show up in altered forms on multiple planes). Divination is one example. It shows up almost everywhere. Theros and Innistrad are two examples that come to mind the most because it's a concession to the fact that magic works the same no matter what plane you're on. Some spells or effects will show up again in different places in the multiverse taking on different aspects in the culture but still being the same general thing. As a Planeswalker you can see these similarities and connections in ways that people on other planes can't.

Also, Planeswalkers are still mages and may take on students, apprentices, companions etc. Sometimes spells might show up places they never have before because a walker came from another plane and demonstrated it. Suddenly loads more people have the new spell in their arsenal.

The problem with this is it hits the wrong decks. BG Constellation is barely a deck, yet here is a 1G instant speed absolute hoser against that deck that is main deckable in a format with Coursers, Detention Spheres and Underworld Connections.

Meanwhile Mono Black Devotion got even stronger with Sign in Blood and Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth with zero hosers printed against it. Imagine if they printed "1W, Instant, destroy all black permanents" instead?

The rich got richer and the poor got poorer.

Well, first off I'm not entirely sure Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth really benefits Monoblack. However, it's not an absolute hoser. It's not all THAT main deck able in a green deck (especially if it's running courser) and again, I'll say that it doesn't seem much worse than a Supreme Verdict

I think this bothers me most because constellation decks are not even remotely overpowered, but are a lot of fun to play. It's not like their existence was punishing to the meta. Now 1 card invalidates the entire core strategy of the deck? Well, it was fun for a couple months, at least...

I'm still not convinced it invalidates an entire strategy. If they'd made enchantment lands too perhaps but there are also significant counters for this. I suspect this will remain sideboard tech for a good long while unless some ridiculous enchants get made in Khans block.

I'm actually rather happy this got printed honestly. It was something I was hoping would show up as a safety net just in case. Again, we don't know what kind of enchantments got made for Khans, or what that version of standard is going to look like. I'd rather people have an out just in case. If it's not needed *shrug* oh well. I agree with some of the people saying it's not too different from a lot of other board wipes (admittedly absurdly undercosted for the world it's going into) but we'll see.

I was one of the people who compared this to Aetherize (even though I love the card). But I'm beginning to rethink that and I'm thinking I might like this more than the new disc that's getting released.

I think I might have said earlier in this thread, it's similar to Aetherize in a lot of ways, but costing a single extra blue mana. However, I'm thinking I'm probably wrong on that analysis after reading it a bit more and seeing the reactions. I'm not sure how good it'll be on release but I think we'll have to see how Khans stacks up and what it offers aggressive decks, as well as if it offers us a 4 mana wrath to really evaluate how much effect this card has. I was REALLY hoping for a Day of Judgment reprint :/ oh well. I knew THAT was a long shot to say the least.

I like the card but I liked Aetherize too and it didn't make a serious impact on Standard and was easier to cast. Slant Knowing me I'll try something with this but what little I've learned of Standard makes me think this might not be good enough. Especially if the new artifact sweeper gets popular.

    Yeah.
I mean Military Intelligence could have been a green card...

Have either of you ever actually played Yugioh? I did. I was fairly good at it (was one of the only people in my area to figure out that a specific deck was going to be dominant months before it hit a major tournament win). Personally, the Mindsculptor standard was the closest this game has ever gotten to yugioh levels of ridiculous that I've been around for in that everyone was using the same darn deck. Until you've got a meta that's almost all aggro with a couple of degenerate combo decks here and there you're a long way off from Yugioh. Calm down. I hear this at least once a set now a days.

  • posted a message on Building teaching decks for a new group
Hello folks. I've got a bit of a situation I was hoping for some help with.

So recently my co-workers (I work in a small library) decided to pick up Magic. The weekend I was out at the Journey into Nyx release they bought intro packs and got hooked. We've been talking about getting a gaming night together. The problem is that they're a little concerned about me steam rolling them. I've been playing for 6 years and they haven't even been playing for a full month yet. Since I'm a Johnny, my favorite colors are Blue and Black and my favorite decks are combo, control and mill, I have a similar worry about accidentally making the game unfun because I enjoy doing things that even I'll admit are kind of dickish toward new players.

Does anyone have any suggestions about how I can build decks that will help teach these guys new things, make the games fun and interesting and won't bore me to tears? I'd like to still play blue but that's not as important here I guess as creating interesting games.

Block is the format that sort of predicts the future of Standard. The coverage made a big deal out of that. There's no reason to expect that Drown in Sorrow, Anger of the Gods, Bile Blight (which is already seeing play) won't see more in the future. That's not even factoring in things like Banishing Light. Again, I've been pretty happy with my own testing for a future FNM... but I don't like what I'm seeing in the data for the purposes of me enjoying rooting for the aggro deck in tournament coverage.
