Streaming the FOOLS scheduled event. Only one game it and it has proven to be kinda sorta wacky.
Hours later, I ended 3-1, 43rd out of 381. Had some pretty good matches despite pretty much throwing away the last round. All are archived if anyone wants to watch.
The only other thread I saw that was trying to use the Gigantomancer/Necrotic Ooze combo was using the Dredge-uh-vine shell, so here I am.
According to MTGS wiki, The Rock is a B/G aggro-control deck that attempts to gain card advantage over the course of the game and finish the opponent off with a beefy creature.
We have Fauna Shaman and Molten-tail Masticore to pitch creatures into our graveyard to make Necrotic Ooze a powerhouse. Masticore in the graveyard also makes our Ooze a lot less fragile thanks to regeneration. I didn't find myself his other ability a ton, but it definitely had its moments. Once Gigantomancer is in the yard, Necrotic Ooze turns all your mana dorks and utility creatures into huge threats. While testing the deck out, it wasn't unheard to swing for 21 the turn after Necrotic Ooze hit the table (with 7 of it in the air, thanks for Birds of Paradise), and that can get out of hand if it isn't dealt with.
I'm not going to pretend that I'm an awesome deckbuilder or anything. I really just looked at old The Rock deck lists and tried to translate it to Standard. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a better way to utilize Necrotic Ooze, but I figured starting with a well-tested and proven archetype would be a good way to start. I really feel like I'm not taking advantage of Fauna Shaman's ability to create a toolbox. I'm definitely willing to toss a couple of 1-ofs in and see what happens, but I'm scurred I will lose some consistency.
Some cards I want to try out:
Consuming Vapors - Fits in with the whole CA idea. Right now I'm testing out Gatekeeper due to him being tutorable with Fauna Shaman.
Pestilence Demon - Simply as a 1-of for the aggro decks out there. Could be cool to use with Gigantomancer's ability to stop you from blowing up your own creatures, but that sounds pretty janky.
Steel Hellkite - The one-sided Pernicious Deed could be cool, but I'm honestly always keeping mana open to Gigantomance my creatures or regen my Ooze. Plus, Ooze doesn't have evasion like the Hellkite, which makes the Deed-effect a lot harder to activate. The +1/+0 ability is too costly to think about using, imo.
Kalitas, Bloodchief of Ghet - Another 1-of. Definitely could be cool. Blowing up creatures and then getting tokens for it sounds good.
Grave Titan - No activated abilities, but he is still an absolute powerhouse. 10 power for six mana with two bodies that are dying to get Gigantomanced!
I know that the black spellbomb and Leyline of the Void take a huge dump on this deck's face, but I really doubt it is gonna reach levels of popularity to where people are worrying about it, so please don't rub this fact in.
I've heard some buzz in this forum about Necrotic Ooze and Gigantomancer together, so lemme know what you guys think/have experienced with it!
Protean Hydra becomes impossible to kill via damage with any aura on him, which is always cool. Sacred Wolf seems like he'd be beastly and tough to deal with when aura'd up. Aura Gnarlid gets bigger with each aura in play and is pretty much unblockable when you put one on him. Sun Titan pretty much recurs everything in the deck.
The enchantments are pretty much self explanatory. Canopy Cover is great, and those three umbras I feel are best suited for this deck. Pacifism is ehhh, but it's just a rough draft after all. I'm sure I'm missing all sorts of potential cards, but I also didn't put much thought into this list, haha.
It seems like a pretty cool idea though. Lots of CA via Snake Umbra and Spiritdancer, umbras make your creatures pretty resistant and beefy.
Gonna do a lot of testing against a Mass Poly deck later today. Seeing as it's tricolored, I'm thinking it will be an easy match up, but we will see. Will post some results later.
I love the list so far. I'm definitely going to throw it together and give it a go. I will probably run Wrexial, the Risen Deep instead of Sphinx of Jwar Isle just for fun, though.
I agree with the Grixis Charm addition to the deck. I mean, if you cascade into it instead of an enchantment, it either acts as removal or more land disruption assuming they have an unenchanted land.
I'm going to try out Brink of Disaster instead of Roiling Terrain for a hot second. It's a lot slower, but it could be interesting as a pseudo Pacifism/removal in addition to land destruction.

That being said, it looks pretty good.

9x Plains
11x Forest

3x Protean Hydra
4x Kor Spiritdancer
4x Aura Gnarlid
3x Bear Umbra
3x Canopy Cover
4x Snake Umbra
4x Hyena Umbra

SB would consist of Leyline of Anticipation, Day of Judgment (one sided board wipe would be sexy, although I doubt it would work out like this all the time), Autumn's Veil, etc etc.
It was a pun. You know, Sun Titan.
I wanna make a G/W deck with Aura Gnarlid, Kor Spiritdancer, Protean Hydra, Sun Titan, and some of the better umbras. Seems like it could be pretty gnarly.
