  • posted a message on When did USPS raise the rates for insurance?
If I am not mistaken, shipping in a bubble mailer + DC is about $1.64 and adding insurance is another $2.35ish totaling about $4.00 (if you use the PayPal multiorder tool). If you don't need the full $100, anything up to like $50 insurance is 0.50 cents less.

The post office is always more expensive then the PayPal multiorder thing, I would suggest using that in the future (if you don't already)

A scan could be helpful (I think you are talking about the little tap arrow, with the black back), but from what I see if the card is marked (c)1995 it will have the black tap arrow. There is a German Tropical Island on ebay right now that has the (c)1995 date and the black tap arrow (the only thing that comes up with "mtg german tropical").

    Pile A:
    2x Geist of Saint Traft

    Pile B:
    1x Iona, Shield of Emeria
    1x Avacyn, Angel of Hope
    1x Doubling Season(foil)

    Thoughts?

Even if it isn't a judge foil Doubling Season, pile 1 looks better to me. I can see the 2 Geist of Saint Traft getting like $50, where as Pile B would be like $45?

Or is there a lot of presale hype?

    Channel Fireball from yesterday
    Decree of Pain $18
    Duplicant: $15
    Mind's Eye: $10
    Rhystic Study: $10
    Sylvan Library: $60

I think that all of these are pre-sale hype. I am pretty sure that if you check ebay frequently enough you can get regular foils of Rhystic Study and Decree of Pain at these prices.
Mind's Eye and Duplicant already have foils out there, so this wouldn't be a pimp version of a $3 card.
I know that Sylvan Library is foil, but you can get Legends ones for like half that... I don't see this card holding value when the set comes out.

I like how you made sure to match up the tops and bottoms on your Menger Sponge, I have one that I didn't take the time to do that and it just bothers me at times...

    EDIT:

Yeah, looking at the picture makes it hard to tell.

This is why I think it's more than glue:
The deviantart account linked in his signature has a picture of the equipment used for working on the cards. The dremel drill bits in particular make me think riveting is involved.

Either way, it looks pretty awesome.

That would be intense, riveting magic cards to get an authentic rivet look. I don't do too much woodworking, but maybe they use the Dremel to pre-drill the holes where they screws the hinge into place?

I believe it was/is played in the merfolk mirror in legacy.

This is correct, but from my understanding people do not play fish very much anymore. It could be an EDH thing? Some EDH players go crazy over foiling out decks...

Unless the card starts seeing play in some legacy deck again, I doubt the foil price will rise too much.

  • posted a message on Customs Question
I have received cards from international traders that have been opened and searched by homeland security, which delays the cards by about a week.

As stated above, I have never heard of a letter receiving a customs number.

  • posted a message on What happened to the $$ of The Abyss recently?
    Quote from movexig
The reason the wording is so strange is because The Abyss is an old, old card, printed before modern wording was in place and they had to salvage it as best they could. There are a lot of cards like that. If it were printed today it would say "At the beginning of each player's upkeep, that player sacrifices a nonartifact creature."

It wouldn't be a sacrifice effect, it would still be a destroy effect allowing you to target an indestructable creature and not have to lose it.

There is some discussion on this topic on the Modern Huge Gainers thread, check out page 86.

  • posted a message on Modern Masters - price changes for Modern staples
The price drop will depend on how limited of a "limited release" this set is. A draftable set with real draft strategies (instead of like fliers) will see a huge increase in popularity. If they print this set like a typical set (3 monthish print run, unlimited supply during that time) then I think whatever modern big hitters will plummet in price. On the other hand if "limited print run" means that each store will receive a case of product, then I think wizards will just piss a bunch of people off (first the 5% who had valueable cards drop, then the other 95% of players that thought they could get great cards cheap)

Personally, if I had the choice of drafting M14 or Modern, I would choose modern (even if it costs $20 instead of $15).

  • posted a message on October Altered Card Contest
This may be the wrong place to ask this, but would an 'alteration' like the one below be allowed for this contest?

This card image is derived from the TV series Inuyasha.

It is not really altered, since no part of the original is visible. The "Beast" and "3/3" are just cut and pasted from the actual card, so no cleaver alterations exist there either.

Please let me know, as I have an overabundance of hand drawn tokens that I use for my decks.

    Thanks,

    kiljo

  • posted a message on Sub Power9 ranking
Outside the P9, my list of the next 9 most powerful cards is:

    10: Yawgmoth's Will
    11: Balance
    12: Sol Ring
    13: Library of Alexandria
    14: Demonic Tutor
15: Storm cards (if this isn't a legit entry, see #19 below)
    16: Tinker
    17: Time Vault
    18: Memory Jar
    *19: Necropotence

And storm cards may need to be above Demonic Tutor... They really allowed combo decks to go off, since you no longer needed a near-infinate loop.

What about Mana Bloom? Can it grant this deck the mana-flexibility and non Restorebalancedkillable-ness (sorry for the long word) it's looking for? Casting it off Borderposts to be able to fix mana and reuse it later could be nice.

Unless I am missing something, Mana Bloom wouldn't work cause it can get cascaded into.

Yes, the emblem states that when a card is placed in your graveyard you may return it to your had. You do not have to.

This might be a dumb question, but are you guys actually riveting the token or is that just glued on for looks?

The picture with the box opened up makes me think that they are just gluing it on the outside for the look (I don't see the other side of the rivit)

  • posted a message on I'm not asking if it can be done, I'm saying let's do it (proposed map of Ravnica)
I don't have any of the Ravnica books, which is really too bad because I like this idea. Hopefully the flavor texts in the following cards can be of some use?

Axebane Guardian: says something about the azebane forests.
Caustic Rain: Talks of a foundry outside of Vitu-Ghazi, where ever that is.
Dryad Sophisticate: Lets us know that Tinstreet is near the Outcast Mansions.
Gnat Alley Creeper: Already been mentioned.
Minotaur Aggressor: Talks about the smelting district.
Piller of the Paruns: Another location to put on the map.
Prahv, Spires of Order: Tells us that Prahv is in Azorius.
Tenement Crasher: Narrow alleys are next to Boros garrison which is next to Orzhov cathedral.
Tin Street Hooligan: Has some sort of guild symbol on it, should locate the tin street?
Urban Burgeoning: Ruins of Old Prahv are also in Azorius.

Not really sure how much can be learned from the books, but I think that flavor text doesn't get us that far...
