Online tutoring is becoming a thing now, especially for the Asian market. So, especially if you're an American (have an american accent, or english accent), you can try to go for online English tutoring services for Chinese/Japanese/Koreans (as they usually are the ones who pay good money for those services). Especially if you're white, they'd love you :p

Ok so here's the backstory. I'm 4 wastelands shy from completing a full legacy merfolk deck. the thing is, 4 wastelands are still out of my reach price-wise. I have a bit of cash that's good for around ~2 wastelands only. Should I

    A) Save up on the remaining 2 wastelands and continue finishing/polishing a legacy merfolk deck

    or

    B) hop on the modern bandwagon, and use that money to buy a few other pieces needed for modern merfolk (and at the same time 8rack, coz I like it :P)

    ?

I haven't played in a long time, and most of my friends who do play live pretty far out. The thing is, if I try to complete a modern deck, I can be more motivated to play in tournaments and fnms sooner. If I hold out for my wastelands, I might forget I even have a magic deck by the time it takes me enough money to buy them.

Take some time to read up on the primers for established decks (depending on what kind of player you are, standard, modern or legacy). Most primers would cite card choices and reasons why those cards are chosen (and some would even include cards that seem good, but aren't chosen and the reasons behind it). This should give you an idea why specific cards are just too good, cards like Tarmogoyf or Force of Will.

Once you have an understanding why specific cards are bonkers, you can then proceed to specific and interesting interactions of seemingly weak cards. This may involve cards like for the Death and Taxes example, Mangara of Corondor and Karakas. This usually involves reading a little bit on the rules involved behind those cards, so gatherer or magiccards.info would be really useful.

[A side step here is to understand the 3 major playstyle of decks: Aggro, Combo and Control. Most decks revolve around these 3, or a combination of any of these.]

The next level of this is understanding deck building and deck lists. You'll notice even a simple deck with little flex spots like Merfolk or Goblins (compared, relatively to the plethora of other decks in Legacy) would have small iterations, different variants, a +1 of something here, a -1 of something there. At this point, while it's all speculative or experiential, there's always a reason why decklists differ, and how different decklists reflect differet metas.

Note that none of the things I just listed will actually help you transition into a competitive player. These are just things I think that are important to know (since, from your example, you said yourself you haven't seen the power of a Jace yet). The more you read up on magic, the faster you'll be into becoming a competitive player Grin

I think they'll need to make a new rule about that. I think enchantments are placed in graveyards because they arent enchanting anything. But if this bestow works like I think it does, it may work like totem armor, but in reverse. The creature (instead of the aura) goes to the GY, and the enchatment becomes a creature instead. This makes sense since the bestow cost is much higher than the normal casting cost of the card. Though, I too, am a bit confused on how bestow works exactly. :|

Is Standstill still worth putting into a merfolk deck? They're cheap as hell at the moment, and I'm considering if I could put them in again in this meta.

What huge casting card are you gonna play with Howltooth? and the second problem/question would be, if you don't draw howltooth or if it doesn't grab the fatty, can you still cast it or is it a dead card? (considering the curve of this deck tops at 3, and most are just 1 drops anyway).

I've considered tuning this deck into more of a Legacy Pox style and away from the Racks which i feel are lackluster. The list i'm considering are this:

I know that this no longer are a '8Rack' deck, but i hope you guys can help me with suggestions etc.

Seems like without the 8rack, it goes back to an MBC, with heavy on the discard suite.

If you're gonna splash blue, maybe try considering Wistful Thinking? Although when I was running this, I was also running Liliana's Caress and Megrim along with Rack to maximize the draw then discard effect. Nothing is sweeter than having a caress or megrim out, casting this, dealing 8 damage and wiping their hand.

In retrospect, the high cmc might be too much, and it'll only serve as wrench mind copies (without the artifact scapegoat part).

If you want a pool of good cards, stop buying boosters and buy singles instead. Buy singles that'll help you shape up the deck you are creating, also considering what the established decks are doing with your deck. You can buy packs for the excitement factor, but not as the main means of increasing your card pool as it'll be doubly expensive in the long run.

I find that hanging around a shop or with people you play more often facilitates the addictive factor of the game.

  • posted a message on Liquimetal Competitive?
it's too narrow in the sense that without liquimetal, the entire deck is dead. imagine drawing a hand without liquimetal. now imagine that happening a few times in a row. Impossible? not really. I remember playing my merfolk deck and quite a few times I wished I had drawn out vial, or force, but it turns out they all decided to hide at the bottom of my deck. Once your opponent realizes you solely rely on liquimetal, he'll do everything in every color available to make that unaccessible to you - blue counters/artifact removal, black selective discard, white uh... artifact removal, red/green artifact destruction. and then what can you do?

imo this feels like a combo deck, but it doesn't go off in a turn, but tries to stabilize the board. also what's your wincon? Why shivan wumpus? A 6/6 trample for 4 is great, but with the option of him not ever seeing play and your opponent being able to hinder your card draw, that's a pretty terrible card imo. with the way some legacy decks power our creatures/cards, land destruction is not very sustainable anymore (hence, less people using sinkhole, albeit a wonderful card).

if you really wanna make this work, try to find a number of ways to make it redundant. The reason why some combo decks can afford to just keep a set of 4 in their deck (like painter stone), is when they do play it, they combo off and win, and/or they have multiple ways to get them fast, and if something happens to one of their combo, they usually have a backup. I don't mean to dissuade you or anything, just trying to give you a feel of how "unfair" legacy decks are to gauge your deck creation.

Ok the title might've been misleading. I'm looking for online card companies based in China so shipping will be kept to a minimum. Another reason is I don't have a credit card but in China I probably might be able to pay them via taobao or some equivalent or money transfer (I only have RMB).

As opposed to a consistent 3/2 with flying on turn two that fits in to a solid denial deck.....

nactl being +3/+3 is waaaaay more consistent than delver flipping.

By that I mean names in the lore of the game. For example, for me it would be

    1.) Elspeth
    2.) Jace

I don't necessarily mean planeswalkers, just, any proper names (commanders!) you might like/remember :p

Anything between 30% and 60% humidity should be comfortable for humans, even at 83F (28C). Under normal conditions, it most certainly shouldn't cause excessive sweating when all you're doing is playing cards.

Unless you're used to a tropical climate (like I am), hitting even 50+% humidity is already uncomfortable. If there's no wind/ventilation, it would suck more :|
