I just wanted to make an announcement to all of you as we are finishing up another holiday season.
I just asked my girlfriend of 5 years to marry me and she said yes!
She is a very awesome person and she even goes to all the pre-releases and sometimes some FNM with me! There's times she asks to play magic at home with me and she has no problem letting me sit down and play some Diablo 3 or some of my PS3.
I'm so happy and I thought I'd share.
For those of you that would like to hear how I did it, follow this youtube link of me talking about it
That's quite a big assumption. If I wanted to collect something I'd never touch I'd collect baseball cards. I play with all my crazy expensive foils. Hell, I even did this with my power and some other expensive cards cause I was sick of them just sitting in a binder: http://www.twitpic.com/a2if9l http://www.twitpic.com/a2ifi9
I absolutely love the "Tower of Power" you created
Yea, my LGS pre-ordered 12 of his 18 copies and then said that we could either come in or call him to reserve one the day of release at MSRP. I called right when they opened and he got one set aside for me and is shipping it to me too My "LGS" is actually over an hour and a half away because that's where I went to college and want to still give them my business because of how honest with prices they've been for the past 5 years.
I don't blame stores for trying to rake in all the money they can, but they will sell a lot less product and be sitting on it for a lot longer along with pissing off some customers who may find out they could have gotten it for significantly cheaper somewhere else.
I do.
Stores buy product very low under MSRP. My LGS told me that the standard rate is about 48% of the MSRP is what they get the product for, and then anything above that 48% is pretty much straight profit. So stores are still making money selling them at MSRP or even at $10-$15 above.
In the long run it's all about how many people you want to keep coming back to your store. I wouldn't keep going back to somebody that bumped up the prices like crazy, so he'd lose a lot of money from me in the long run. Sure, he sold that one product at a crazy rate, but he won't get any more of my money after that!
Saw a bunch of Broodmate Dragon ones at both of the local Wal Marts while hunting for PC2012 Ninja decks, but I passed on them. No thanks to a $3 promo card + 3 packs full of jank for $10. I'd rather go buy singles.
I usually pull pretty well in those promo packs.
The distributor takes broken cases (from blister packs, fat packs, intro packs) from the retailers and repackages them, which usually means you have a higher likelihood of getting some mythics (due to the probability of mythics in fat packs.)
They do the same thing with the "2 boosters, 8 random cards" thing. The 8 random cards are highly likely to be loose foil cards or big cards from intro packs, duel decks, and premium deck series.

I've found that Stifle and other similar cards (counter triggered abilities) help me get him out early game without the side effects!
My LGS got me on the pre-order list at MSRP
And they're shipping it to me! (My LGS is 1.5 hours away...soooo not very local)
