Dec 27, 2011Zelderex posted a message on [TI] Cards I Want to Build Decks AroundGenesis Wave used to be AWESOME with Ob Nixillis, the Fallen.Posted in: jander_blackheart Blog
You could try a RUG or UG deck with Clones, and stuff with ETB effects. Pop a genesis wave with X=6 or so, plop down a Pierce Strider and copy it a few times?
Alternatively, play it in an Elf deck (if those are even still possible...) -

Venser, The sojourner is something to work towards if you can get the money together.

Dec 13, 2011Zelderex posted a message on Why WotC shouldn't ban brainstorm in legacyExcept that banworthy decks in Legacy have historically run Brainstorm as a 4-of. Same for mild format warpers, and "best decks." The choice is between banning Brainstorm, and weakening currently degenerate decks (such as RUG Tempo), as well as mitigating the potential for variants of U/X Tempo to be degenerate in the future, OR they can just keep banning another card every five-six months without fail until the end of time. You are saying, flat out, that Power Creep is preferable to weakening blue. That sort of attitude is insane. I can understand wanting to play Brainstorm- but just because I want to play Black Lotus and Yawgmoth's will outside of Vintage, that doesn't mean I'll get my way. Treating Brainstorm as something that can't be taken away is simply entitlement on the behalf of blue players; who have been notoriously arrogant about how they've owned Legacy for most of it's 7 odd years.Posted in: Bread Connoisseur Blog
On top of that, it's a problematic card, in that it provides a great alleyway with which people can cheat (and get away with it just being a "Misunderstanding,")- as evidenced by Alex Berticonni. I'm not saying to ban every card he ever cheated with, but when he got away with cheating twice in one tournament (or was it match?) using the same card, it evidences that the card is not functional in design. The card was deemed confusing enough that blatantly cheating was considered an understandable mistake.
If all that's not enough; it would be a step to make the power level of Magic more universal, in terms of what Wizards feels is what "should," exist at a given CMC. Brainstorm is strictly better than 100% of all other 1 cmc blue dig spells, and the effect is so powerful that it doesn't exist in any format but Legacy and Vintage, and is considered degenerate in Vintage. -
Dec 12, 2011Zelderex posted a message on Pillars of PauperThe $20 I've put into Pauper modo have been VERY well spent. Casual games get cut-throat, which is nice if you're working on your pathetic excuse for a competitive deck (MBC, which places, but you need VERY careful meta-ing).Posted in: ME's Dream Halls

Dec 11, 2011Zelderex posted a message on Pillars of PauperMadness is only good in a Dead Dog deck (which is madness aggro), and that's tier 2 at best. Your list is almost complete, just remove Hymm to the Tourach (since NO ONE plays Paper Pauper), add Affinity, and add Spellstutter Sprite.Posted in: ME's Dream Halls
I love pauper to death, but the meta (while diverse), is pretty stagnant.
Oh yeah, and Goblins too I guess. - To post a comment, please login or register a new account.
Loved the imagery. It occasionally verged on being nonsensical, but mostly stayed within the realm of whimsy. I liked it much for the same reasons I almost voted for honeycomb; imagery with strong metaphor and easy rhythm. I just felt like honeycomb kind of got lost along the way; like instead of getting the figurative "moneyshot," it got taken in another direction that was neither close enough nor severely different enough from the rest of the piece to feel satisfying.
But he's dead.
And I'm alive.
Against leaden hands;
As hope is plundered
We near the strand-
We take to sea
(Heavy hearts seek
Distant lands-)
On fractured bone
And splintered stone.
A desperate heave
Against leaden hands:
An austere death spiral
Dovetailing into failing fingers.
A flailing mind wrings
Right from wrong
Every dawn was
Snatched from jaws.
I'm feeling the theme of change today. It's just big in my life.
And I was alone
Inasmuch as
One allows a writer
To embellish
That I was alone with
A tired woman
And a man with a brown bag
That must have been a faithful
Friend the way it steeled him
Against the end
The sixty six was late,
Again
And I was alone;
Inasmuch as a man can be alone
With a bus driver feeling the only
Way a person can feel about
A union job at three in the morning
The sixty six was late,
And I was alone;
Inasmuch as a poet can be
Alone with the hope that
Rain would pick up and puddles
Would gather and the streets
Would be thematically slick with stories
Begging to be told like
Rottweilers railing against the
Fencing of my skull
The sixty six pulled up,
And I was alone
If you'll allow, of course

Which is where ilvaldi got his (correct, from my memory) list of winners.
Your problem seems to be with the entire concept of movies based on other things...they're sorta based on something. The reason why most of the Spider Man movies focus on Peter trying to deal with loss is because Spider Man, especially post 9/11, has been about dealing with loss and finding hope. And I dunno if I would call it a cash grab- by Blockbuster standards it's artistic tour de force. They could have just as easily gone the Michael Bay/Superman/Iron Man/Thor/Avengers route and made a movie entirely devoid of themes or ideas, but they didn't. The movie, if anything, serves as a vehicle for character development and interaction, which I find to be a welcome change from most action movies, wherein character development is just an excuse for the hero to fight some new bad guys.
If you found the movie heartless....I don't really know what to say. Did you not genuinely feel the friendship between Peter and Harry, at least once or twice? What about the scenes between Peter and Gwen? Did you really not feel any of Harry's emotional motivation? Again; if anything, the movie is ALL heart, with most of the blockbuster staples of action and complex plot lazily stapled on to what amounts to a movie that should have been about the exploration of a person's responsibility to other human beings.
Seriously though Rhino was the worst excess I've ever seen in a comic book movie. No reason for him to be there, no reason for the character to be so absurd (a mentally deficient foreigner? Really? THAT'S the guy we're giving a ******* mech suit? Not, say, one of the badass commandos you had on call?)
But yeah I loved it. I dunno. I thought that, when giving some leeway for the obligatory blockbuster concessions (though the action scenes were occasionally great; there were a few times in the movie where Spider man felt agile and creative- and other times where I wondered if the director thought he was directing a superman movie), this was one of the better Comic Book movies released in the last few years. I genuinely appreciated the focus on human relationships, even if it occasionally left the film with some fat that could have been trimmed.
yeah, kinda bites. In the meantime, our commmunity loves more posts, especially short stories! We're all really appreciative of non-MTG related stuff, to boot. I hope you stick around!
The new poll format is really unfortunate, since we can no longer choose to make votes viewable (thanks obama/Curse). It may be time to alter the format so that the poll is conducted entirely through post declaration (it's time stamped, promotes a little extra discussion, and verifiable).
