I was wondering if it's just a local thing, but in my local area people and stores play a game called pack war. People participating buy a booster pack, and everyone cracks their pack. Highest converted mana cost wins all competing packs. So if 4 people played, and I pulled a 7 CMC card while other people only pulled a 5 or a 6, the person with the 7 cmc card takes all the packs. My local game store likes playing this with people after an FNM, mildly addicting, and usually the winner gets great cards. I pulled 3 fetchlands this last friday from one of these games.
During the last few weeks before a local store closed, I went in and raked in the winnings, since only casual people or casual people that thought they were good played there. I played at another place where the competition was tougher, and the two store were rivals. I went in, and played. At the rival store all the regulars are used to going into the back and talking and giving tips to each other before and after matches. (I assume the owners gave the regs info on what everyone ran, and mainboarded accordingly.) I played with my rogue eldrazi green deck (which my friends call the green menace, since I run all kinds of threats), and won the first two matches 2-0, then went onto first with 2-1 in each match. Before the third match the person I had played yelled out from the back "What the F---!" and "god---- eldrazis!". The third match this cocky guy played against me, cocky since he kept mentioning his recent PTQ win. (This same guy went on to play in PT Paris 2 weeks ago.). It was a close match, and he was playing aggro red, and we were 30 minutes in, he kept telling me "could you please hurry up?" and kept making grunts of disgust (even when I took 30 second turns and he clearly kept stalling the game with his 2 minute thinking sessions per turn). When I finally beat him, he rage quit out of his chair and threw his deckbox against the wall.
The last person rage quitted as well, but not as hard as the third player. At the end, collecting my prizes, the owner told me "Wow, your deck is pretty good. Nobody knew how to sideboard against it, and alot of people bet against you."
Im just on holiday in LA and i can't help but resist the temptation of attending the pre-release; however i have no idea if there is A shop running the pre-release nearby on a sunday. Can you guys give me some help?
