Next time run Trade Secrets on one of them and let him or her mill you empty thinking they accomplished something. Then slap down a Black Vise and laugh.

  • posted a message on Why isn't Helm of Obedience-Leyline of the Void combo played?
Basically what my title asked. With the recent flux of High Tide decks being successful, I am wrong to think that the Helm of Obedience with Leyline if the Void combo could be equally as viable? Tide seems to like to go off around turn three and with Petals, LED, or other methods this could as well. Your thoughts.

Just a note: After leaving the game for more than a decade and coming back this year, "net-decking" on cockatrice has ultimately made me a better player. By playing, and playing against for that matter, top decks I have truly became a better player. Top decks are top decks because they are perfectly balanced and have the correct answers for a certain tier's meta. If it wasn't for "net decking" it would have taken me so much longer to properly learn how to build and play. Now I'm just bad instead of horrible.

I was 11 and got into the game during revised. It was Pre-Internet and every pack you opened introduced something new. I miss that.

  • posted a message on The benefits of collectors, or why we make your game better
The sooner people realize that Eternal staples, especially Legacy staples, aren't that expensive the better off they will be. Heck, half the people who come on here and complain about the reserve list have links to $300-$400 standard decks or their all foil EDH decks. Skip one standard season, save some money, and get some staples. ABUR duals and Force of Will's don't have shelf lives. They are not going to go bad on you.
The other half of people complain that they don't have anyone to play with because their friends or play group can't afford staples. Here is an option, and I know this might blow your mind... use proxies. My brother is 16, I don't reasonably expect him to spend hundreds of dollars on cardboard. So when he plops down a gold border Wasteland or plays a gate and says it is a Bayou I don't flip the table in disgust. I play the game.

  • posted a message on Why are italian cards usually cheaper than english?
I picked up a huge bulk lot (around 12k cards) of freshly opened Italian Legends almost six months ago. I wonder if it is from the same find.

    Quote from Dakhwon
    There's two basic reasons:
    1) Supply exceeds demand.
    2) Like 12 months ago, someone found a huge supply of old Italian sealed product. Many online stores, Starcity in particular, suddenly were flush with boxes of older sets in Italian, most notably Legends. I don't know what the story behind that is, kinda wish I did.

  • posted a message on The problem with collectors
I disagree with these arguments. Collecting has always been, is, and will always be part of this game. If it wasn't it would be monopoly. And to the poster that said you wouldn't care if your $1000 deck became a $300 deck: you are lying to yourself to make a point. If you honestly feel that way shoot me your trade and sell list and I'll gladly offer you 30% all day long.

I made an infinite everything deck using Ring of Ma'rûf.

Is that even possible? The Ring would be removed from the game after each use, so you would have to use it to tutor another ring. But even then Ring can only be used in draw situations...am I right? Could be completely wrong. I have no imagination:-/.

Never had a problem with packages with DC but recently I had several (4-5) eBay wins fail to show. All were from sellers advertising free shipping so I am assuming they shipped PWE. All were from different sellers but all were located in Southern Cali. Considering everything else won arrived safely and without delay (another 25-30 items) I wondered if someone along the chain from that area was picking off envelopes without tracking from known sellers and dealers.

Things like that happen occasionally. Very rarely, but occasionally. The strangest thing I remember seeing was my cousin open a Mirage Starter box that contained only lands. On the other hand I picked up a half dozen AVR packs at Wal-Mart while grocery shopping today and one had three rares (no foil) in it. All three were junk rares but nonetheless. Like someone else stated, contact WotC customer service and they will likely rectify the situation.

  • posted a message on Is it wrong to not concede?
I haven't attended a large scale tournament in over a decade, but in my previous experience I was never asked to or asked another player to concede. I suppose that if the opponent was polite about the situation I would consider it, but in all likelihood I would want to play it out. Odds are that if he/she is in a position for a top 8 finish and I'm not, that player would be the favorite. Do what you are supposed to do in that situation then and win.

I also strongly disagree with the arguments stating that less experienced players should concede, and that they "don't get it" if they wouldn't. People go to GP's and other large tournaments to play Competitive Magic. If they didn't want that they would have just stayed home and played on the kitchen table. Back when I went to competitive events I went to play stronger players. When I lost I felt like I learned something and when I beat more experienced players I felt like I achieved something. That lesser player who beat you instead of stepping aside likely gained the confidence to attend more events more often.

I had never considered making custom cards until I browsed the custom pages tonight. It looked like fun so I gave it a go. I was toying with this idea of outside individuals thrust into the idea of great war which is why the two cards are colorless. I'm sure both cards are broken or too strong, but it was more about coming up with something new and fun than something that fits. Hope you enjoy them.

  • posted a message on Fell back in.
    Hello,

Joined here awhile back but never posted. I got into MTG before Fallen and Homelands with my first heyday being the Ice Age and Mirage block. I was young then and didn't know much but I remember busting Legends, Antiquities, and Arabian Nights packs back in the day. I also remember trading stacks of those sets for cards I thought were cool. There's no telling how many cards like Mana Drain I traded for Jester's Masks or Teferi's Puzzle Box. Just young and didn't know any better. Besides the extent of my playing was at the kitchen table with my cousins and friends.

Soon after I dropped playing while I was in high school as I had more important things to do with my time and completely forgot about the game until later in college. I found out a good friend played and he drug me out to a booster draft and I was hooked again. Onslaught had just hit (it might have been an Onslaught release party) and I dove into it head first. This time I was a little more mindful of the mechanics of the game and really enjoyed the game from a different prospective. I introduced my girlfriend (now wife) to the game and she also became hooked. Mindful that we both worked full time, had scholarships, and lived together we had plenty of disposal income and used it to bust box after box of Onslaught, Legions, and Scourge. (Remember that I was building 2 play sets not just one.) Actually, before I got online tonight I just sorted a monster box of Onslaught and Legions uncommons and the rough math figured that we opened around 27 boxes!

Anyways, for a little over a year we were really into the game and traveled for tournaments in the region. Mirrodin carried our interest for a bit, but by the time Champions came out we had all but set the game to the side. We cashed out, sold most of our decks, promos, rares, and foils and moved on. We got married, jobs, and a had a kid. Life started happening. Then recently I was cleaning around in the basement and found a couple of binders and several monster boxes of cards we had forgotten about. The binders were nice considering I thought we sold most of anything with value (multiple play sets of the fetch lands, Piledrivers, Sharpshooters, Akroma's, Foils of 90% of the block rares) and I figured I would sell them as well. But as I was sorting them to list on ebay I started to get the itch again. The next time I was at Wal-Mart I grabbed a couple starter decks and a half-dozen packs of DA to see what the game was like now and invited my 15 year old brother over to teach him the game. My wife laughed and joked about how we used to be uber geeks. I came home tonight and she had just ripped a couple of decks and a dozen boosters. Here we go again.

So just wanted to say hi to the board. I've learned a lot about the new mechanics and formats just from reading here in the past week. You'll probably see me around here until life comes calling again. Hopefully I'll catch some of you at the SCG Event here in Nashville at the end of the month. I have a wedding to attend that Sat, but I'm going to try to make it to the Legacy on Sunday. Also if anyone can recommend a good shop with regular players in the middle Tennessee area I would appreciate it. I'm not sure my old shop in Murfreesboro is still in business.

    Thanks
    Steven
