A New and Exciting Beginning

The End of an Era
  • posted a message on Trade Binder Setup?
I have multiple binders: 1 for money cards, 3 for "all other rares". Each binder is sorted by color, then by casting cost. Money binder is one-card-per-slot-per-side, usually with perfect fits inside. Other binders are "How many of these can I cram in there without damaging them?".

I don't currently differentiate much between the normal binders and standard: if I did more trading with standard in mind, I'd keep that in a 5th binder, organized by block then by CC. That way, as it rotates, I could just move each page to the correct place in the non-standard binders.

Powered Stax, followed by (as Lithl said) Chaos decks. In more general terms: anything that prevents the play group from interacting with the game.

For chaos, I'd add Grip of Chaos and Planar Chaos to the list. The former makes it very difficult for anyone to react to the game state, and the latter essentially makes 50% of spells fizzle. Red is also a good color for mass land destruction, especially where you can manage to make it be extremely asymmetrical (Ruination, Blood Moon).

However, the most angry I've ever seen a play group was from stax. The Abyss, Nether Void, Smokestack, Contamination, Death Cloud, Possessed Portal, Chains of Mephistopheles. Lots of mana rocks to power things out early, maybe even splash green for that and to help handle problem permanents.

  • posted a message on U / G: Birthing Pod
I run up to 7 in my birthing pod deck, so that I can pop the Wurmcoil Engine for something nice atop the two extra critters. 7 doesn't give you much in green, but both the white and black praetors work absurdly well here. Maybe you can find something that fits UG better, I found that Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite was worth splashing into white for, as it frequently cleared the board for the two 5/5 wurms to get through. White also gives you False Prophet, which has single-handedly won me more aggro matches than anything else.

The black praetor was good, too, giving you a new chain, recurring the engine or a slime every turn, but as he doesn't -immediately- affect the board, I've since cut him.

I also run Phyrexian Metamorph, but since I'm frequently copying a pod with it, I don't count it towards my pyramid.

My favorite version of this deck is a creatureless version using Ensnaring Bridge and Null Brooch. It's not a hard lock, especially in multiplayer, but this atop the disruption you're already running makes for a very ugly time for your opponent. Adding a tiny bit of graveyard recursion makes the amount of card advantage you're losing friendly.

I ran Anvil of Bogardan to ensure they discard something each turn.

  • posted a message on Limited Resources Deck
I built a WG Limited Resources (henceforth LR) deck a while back. Very controllish build with an emphasis on LD, though. My primary goal was to use Limited Resources, so some of my choices were suboptimal. One card that worked well was Mwonvuli Acid-Moss. I also ran Creeping Mold, as it pulls double duty.

One problem I had was to protect my LR. That whole "Sac down to five" bit is quite painful a second time. I ran Sterling Grove. It's search, it's protection, it's beautiful.

I'm not sure about Balance here. It's bloody powerful, but the hope is that you're ahead in at least terms of land when after you drop the LR. A wrath package to wipe the board until you drop LR might serve your purposes better. Ghostly Prison is also an attractive "Slow down the game until I take over" option. It's also fetchable and protectable with Grove.

  • posted a message on What are the "rules" of casual?
Casual is whatever your group agrees to. Most of the groups I've played with are "Eh" on banned/restricted unless you give them some reason to.

In my local group, the rule is pretty simple: if people are still enjoying the games against you, it's safe. Combos are great the first few times, but... well, most of us were playing when Urza's Broken Saga was around, our tolerance is lower these days. If you're winning -every- game turn 3, you'll be asked to switch to something with an appropriate power level.

One of the locals runs a deck designed to kill with Marhault Elsdragon (Yes, there's a story there...) with most of the P9 as a 4-of. Never been asked to switch out, even if he drops the guy the first turn, it's not like he's brutal.

Another color option would have been uw or wg. I don't think it would have been a good choice, but dovescape would have been funny. Protect our dragon from removal, make useless-to-negative blockers, works great with the licids.

Making a suggestion, query, etc. Not actually adding the card, as I'm not sure what direction we're taking this deck yet. Not sure if I should repost the decklist for this; clarification please?

Hunted troll. It's in-color, and gives them flying blockers. Rampage:4 with tempting licid - it's three giant growths on our dragon and a critter on top. That's three cards, but I think it's extremely flavorful with the initial choice.
