Seems agressively bad. Like- they were trying to make it really really bad on purpose. These kinds of cards can never be good, unfortunately. If they were good, they'd probably be too good. That mythic set symbol looks real bad on ya, girl.
I thought my need for three headed things was satisfied by that three headed unstable goblin. Boy was I wrong. I'll have a godzilla sized t-rex with two sides of T-rex please.
Dilophosaurus has me feeling some sort of way. They have some JP fans making these art calls and card designs for sure. Definitely my favorite block even just with Ixilan.
Looks like you can use paper and a d20 if you don't have internet. So that's nice.
Edit: not really that simple actually. Maybe there's a way to set it up randomly from paper though.
Huh. Looks like I was right the first time. I wonder why all the abilities were posted twice. That's what jacked me up. Guess I should have read a bit closer.
So I was deckcrafting a Crossbreed labs deck, and I realized that guild has basically zero ways to generate contraptions. They have.... First pick? That's literally the only card in that faction that assembles contraptions. That's a pretty massive fail imo. You can go into blue to get some good assemblage going, but blue isn't crossbreed labs and I want to stay W/G. There should have been an ETB assemble card for Widget, so at least I could stay in white... Why even have crossbreed contraptions at all if you can barely make them???
The set is great. Yeah, there are some boneheaded design choices, but compared to the last un-sets? The new mythic contraptions are pretty mythic imo. Bee Bee gun is the least interesting one of them to speak nothing of its power. Definitely have to make a pair of duel decks, but I'm not sure which guilds have the best internal synergy. GR(B?) Goblin contraptions seems obvious. Maybe add black so they can buddy up with DOOM, which seems to like rolling dice too. Maybe they can fight crossbreed labs and their combination creatures. S.N.E.A.K seems kinda annoying to play with. Widget is just regular old magic cards for the most part. Too bad. Definitely have to get all 45 contraptions for the full page binder pages though.
My house rules that buzzbark has just a second. Wtf were they thinking not actually having that on there? It like the best and worst card in the set now
Oh agreed very much so. I can see myself actually buying and drafting packs of this with some buds. I haven't really cared for these types of sets but it does feel like a functioning set so far.
Replying to you so I don't have that big ol' wall of text (please make this a card wizards) in the quote, but yeah. Count me as one of the players who see the contraption mechanic as silly, but with powerful PLAY potential. I'm not going to yawn as I lay down my Bee bee gun- I'm going to cackle as my guild's superweapon cranks to slot 3 and I slam 7+ effects down with it and blow up the table. Add a cohesive but, entirely UNdeck next to it (seriously the guild stuff makes this hard not to), and you have a seriously fun and silly time on your hands. Note, that the old UNsets are fun to read, but I would never imagine putting most of those cards in a deck because they have no mechanical synergy. (I do want some reprints like duh, for example though.) How much you guys bet they are going to do a planechase style release with contraption gameplay with another name if contraptions are well-received?
They don't look like boring trash. They ARE boring trash no matter how nice the art looks when you place them together in the binder (which will only remind you of how disappointing they are).
Contraptions are glorified artifacts that you place from some deck and then activate in a cyclical fashion. That's it. Unless there is some really unexpected reveal or change in fun-level, this will be a really stable disappointment. Which will probably be the case, since that bee-gun thing is mythic.
10 years of degisgning for a mythic "2: fight target creature". Kill me.
Putting all 9 of each faction's contraptions in the binder actually has me pretty hyped. Thanks for bringing that up! Art, Mechanics, limited playability, sillyness, inside jokes, meta gameplay(hangman)- This set looks like it has it all.
The contraption design is so, so cool, but does not feel mechanically "jokey." I was worried we wouldn't see any actual joke cards of old until I saw HANGMAN. That's the stuff. It looks like we will get a premium blend of mechanically cohesive cards and silly meta joke effects. I wish hangman was an upkeep trigger though. Won't people just leave it as 1/1 and never activate it? I can't tell if I want to make faction decks, or just a set of duel decks using all the contraptions between them. Decisions decisions.
You force your opponent to guess for Hangman. It's not a once per turn thing. You can make them guess during combat.
Oops. Read it too fast. It just says that other players have to guess so the controller doesn't just spew wrong answers. Definitely an upgrade. Definitely gonna make some joke decks.
