Companions will always be a big issue.
mainly because they're free consistency + card advantage.
and they're designed to work damn well in decks that have their conditions.

    that said....
it's very, very hard to design companions that are not either waaaay to good or just borderline unplayable.

You certainly do have a point, Lutri is practically unplayable as the prerequisite is too much to be played in any meaningful way that wasn't Commander. It probably should have been "two copies or less of each nonland card" then at the very least would have been playable.

I'd think the ones they did end up getting right though are Umori, Obosh, Jegantha, Kaheera, and Zirda. Strong cards that weren't really doing much of anything, their prerequisites are appropriate, and their effects aren't too straong (Zirda's and Obosh's being the strongest among those.)

I mean, when your companion is a reasonably costed engine that is always available to cast on a deck that won't simply miss it's first turns because of the restrictions, then it's automatically broken.

I don't know about broken, but it is fairly easy to make a broken card when it is so easy to cast it.

that said, yes, too many obvious slips are passing through playtests.....
Companions is a new wacky mechanic, so it's likely it can slip through.

but stuff like Underworld Breach and Oko, Thief of Crowns shouldn't ever be printed..... they're blatantly obvious overpowered format warping cards and stuff like that should be caught during internal playtesting.

They definitely should not have been pushed out as they were, that's for sure. I can't say much about Breach as I always forget that card exists for some reason and don't pay attention to it. Oko was a clear case of all the wrong stats on a card. A plus ability on removal is never a good idea and definitely should have been -1, zero at most. If none of the abilities changed cost then 3 CMC was too low. As printed Oko's -5 was somehow the most fair part about that card considering how good the +1 was.

At first I didn't think Oko was amazing, definitely good though, but it's clear it was a huge issue that is oddly overlooked.

So weird to have multiple bannings and even functional power level errata this early in the release. I mean, did they even test these?

This is something I've been wondering. Seems like their new playtest group started strong, but in the past two years there have been more bannings than ever. To companion's credit only two or three are a real issue that could have been solved by different CMC, stats, or prerequisites (to be a companion) on the card(s).

If I had to put this on the storm scale I'd be putting this at around a (maybe a 6) 7 or 8, considering how hard it is to balance, but as we see it is possible to make companions that aren't overly oppressive.

Well companions will still see play and at least now you run the risk of possibly getting them discarded and not used. It's still an extra card in your hand, but at least it'll either take two extra turns to get going or wait far longer to do it.

    Hang on minute

Looks like we all may have jumped the gun on the $100 price tag of vip packs

    https://news.toyark.com/2020/05/22/magic-the-gathering-double-masters-with-vip-collector-box-information-388935

They say $35-$40 here so that

I still think that price point is rather absurd. The idea of a premium product for a Masters set is essentially giving a premium product its own premium product. It's very strange.

Specifically, the "printing broken cards to cater to whales" is a baseless conspiracy and not a very good one. The rest of it is a well reasoned concern.

It's not exactly a conspiracy, it's a way to sell packs to people so that way they can have the best. Sure it's not targeted at whales specifically, but they would be the ones to buy the most. So conspiracy? Not really. Sales strategy? Definitely.

And to be fair we have seen the highest allotment of bannable/strong cards we have seen in a while and only in the last couple of years. Starting with M19 we haven't had this many bannings in a long while and considering they are going to be changing an entire mechanic because of how strong it is that really does lend some credence to the whale selling comment.

It hit me today, these packs having double rares in them is kind of annoying. Theme boosters are 30 cards and only have a chance at two rares. I get that theme boosters aren't the best, I just couldn't help but notice.

As for the "you don't have to buy it, so what's the problem" argument. It is certainly true that people don't have to buy these more premium packs, but these being all the time and for the price they are shows the company is caring more for money than the health of the game. It's definitely a long vs. short term gain. They have been pushing the envelope this past year or so with far more cards that are becoming problematic so people spend more that way, with far more products, far more premium products, far more ways to spend more, and things that just don't seem necessary.

This is showing a trend and that trend that doesn't have the best light at the end of the tunnel. Remember the first premium product we had was for Alara then it took years later to have the Premium Deck Series (that lasted only three decks) and then we had From the Vault once a year. Now count since Eldraine and suddenly you'll find dozens of premium products and it hasn't even been a full year yet.

Eldraine collectors pack, Eldraine collecters fat pack, that $400 premium bundle, Theros collectors packs, 23 different Secret Lairs with one of them costing $400, and by the time we've hit a full year we'll have a Masters product with its own collectors pack, Zendikar 3 will have its own collectors packs, if not more stuff, and M21 will have a collectors pack. Finally, that doesn't even include the other normal products during this time. Then you get to Christmas and we might have a Zendikar collectors fat pack and $400 bundle, and that's not to mention another 20+ Secret Lairs we'll probably have throughout the year.

Product fatigue set in a while ago and at this point its product abuse. They need to pull back on a lot of this.

Disclaimer: I'm not complaining that I can't afford all of it, in fact I'm glad not to pay for most of this stuff, but the past year and the rest of this year have shown a worrying degree that doesn't look like it will be good for the game in the long run.

Well well, what do we have here? Hang on to your seats, for the low low price of $92,5 each, you can get 4 VIP boosters!
    Fancy a draft, anyone?

Are there collectors boosters for a Masters set? Seriously? At that point why not build a "deck" out of unopened boosters where you play the card equal to the art on the pack. WotC is already doubling down, why not triple down? Hell, while we're at it the price of admission is to buy a case of this set first! MONEY FOR NOTHING AND YOUR CHICKS FOR FREE!

Great art for this batch, but for $30 this is an automatic pass.

I certainly do like the theme of the art and I do enjoy Spell Pierce and Inkmoth Nexus, but this is yet again too many products in a year of too many products, especially for Secret Lair, and it's yet another pass. I honestly might have bought some Secret Lairs in the past if the price was $10 less for some of these.

These arts also seem like something you'd find a booster and not paying $30+ for a small bundle.

I haven't even been able to get a hold of Ikoria in my local Wal-Mart yet and here Wizard's is announcing five different products in a week.

I like the idea of the art (I think Domri's is the worst though), but these feel like a potential promo in a booster and not something to buy in a small bundle.

That Arcbound Ravager art is the first time in a while I went "ooph". The other pieces of art are good in their own ways. Kind of wish Walking Ballista had a Zoids reference (with the raptor mech throwing rockets out everywhere) instead of normal mech reference, but what can you do. I will say that Darksteel Colossus is the only art that makes sense for the card.

This has value, but I am going to skip this once again, like I will most likely always skip these.

As much as I like the art for these this is going to be another skip from me, one because I don't need more Lightning Bolts, two this will be too expensive for the product and three it's yet another product in a couple years of too many products.

Gavin confirmed earlier they have plans for Oubliette earlier in that interview with the professor it's either this or commander legends

He also mentioned a batch of five fetches would only be slightly more expensive than $160.

Don’t remember Gavin saying it. Blake Rassmusen definitely did in Prof’s video.

My point being that they say things that are not always true.
