Slant the dinosaurs deck is like $60 pre-order price after spoilers came out.

I really want the new cards (the new dinosaurs, the icon, and maybe wayta) I just hope it doesn't make the prices back breaking because of this

Preorder is almost always high, wait a few weeks after and I'm sure you can get it for the usual ~$40, and likely the bundle of all four for ~$130.

UB getting one of the best dinosaur cost reduction cards is frustrating.

UB frustrates me often this way, like when 40k had the first good demon lord or many other effects you'd think would be put in a Commander deck for a normal set or in the set(s) themselves. It's so strange why they seem to favor UB this way.

With that said the art for actors/real people continues to be bad. Why is Owen's face look that way and lit that way? None of the UB art for real people look good, and I don't get why.

A seemingly random reprint, considering there really isn't a life gain theme in the set, but it's about time a Standard set has some decent reprints

I'm trying to think of how many creature types can really abuse this. Best I can come up with are the obvious ones like elves and humans.

That art is so weird. I like the almost "I got a night time photo" look of it, but it feels.....odd.

I know it's an uncommon, but that golem generator seems awfully weak compared to another golem making Ixalan card, Golden Guardian.

Makes me wonder what everyone's reaction would've been If Wizards of the Coast / Hasbro had Magic: The Gathering collaborate with DC Comics instead of Marvel. It wouldn't have caused as much stigma and negative publicity as to what they've chosen instead by trying to capitalize more on extremely polarizing characters as opposed to DC Comics where there's hardly any as it also would've been less of a blow to Stan Lee's legacy.

I'd much rather have Wonder Woman over Captain Marvel in Magic: The Gathering simply because she's not a Mary Sue and people can actually relate to her as a character especially Batman whose arguably the most relatable character in DC Comics. Superman is too basic but I can see how he's an inspiration to some people out there where as my favorite quote about Superman was from David Carradine in Kill Bill: Vol. 2 (2004).

I'm sure DC would have been accepted just as poorly, if not worse, thanks to the fact that the DCEU primarily went so poorly (Suicide Squad being one of the worst movies ever made), with barely any of them being decent or good (Wonder Woman being their best film) and their recent ones are between underpar and plain not good.

Could be many factors for why this didn't go well out of the gate between product overload, UB overload, the inevitability of this that this wasn't surprising, that they announced it 18-24 months early (which they almost never announce Magic product that soon), or a combination of those and more.

The only thing I can say about this UB that I will enjoy is that I'll get any Venom/Thor/Wolverine cards for my brother as a gift. So thanks, WotC, for an easy gift in two years, I guess.

WotC thought that with superhero fatigue, Marvel's movies not doing as well as they used to (Thor 4 is so bad), and so much more that now would be the time to strike while the iron is luke warm?

Seems like the only crossover that they've done while it's popular is D&D, and even they screwed that up a bit with Baldur's Gate.

We're going to get to the point where half the sets will be UB. I'm not thrilled by this just like I'm not thrilled by most Marvel releases nowadays.

  • posted a message on Draft Boosters and Set Boosters are being replaced by Play Boosters
    Quote from DJK3654 »

Play boosters are modeled after set boosters, the better selling ones, which they are replacing, designed to give the same approximate value, so they are priced the same. If these cost less than set boosters it would be a price decrease. Do you really think WotC was ever going to do that?

No, I didn't think they'd do that, so I don't know what you're asking that question. I just think they could have mitigated some of the blowback from bumping their prices up on a swath of their player base and reducing the amount of product they get at the same time by cutting the price down a bit, especially when they already bumped up prices within the last 18 months or so. Magic is making the most money it has ever had, times three, pretty sure they could take this small hit without pissing off players for no reason.

If they just wanted limited players to pay more, they could have just changed draft boosters to be more expensive in some way. The cost of limited is clearly a side effect, the business reasons for this change are pretty clear, with draft boosters not selling enough. Nothing particularly charitable about taking them at their word here, it's all laid out pretty plainly.

This is the same company that kept intro decks and theme boosters going for nearly half a decade, even though they weren't selling, so this "limited would have died unless we did this" is not something I fully believe. Could it have died eventually? Maybe, but they made it sound like it was in the next couple of years. I'm sure draft packs still sell FAR more than those useless things, or their newest iteration of the set Jumpstart packs.

Perhaps they should change Collectors boosters name to Whale boosters.

Indeed, you could argue that they do want to charge more for limited because of course businesses always want more money,

It's not something you "could argue" that's always an argument that can be made and you should take every excuse they have with a Mount Fuji level of salt. There's no reason to believe this, just like their latest "UB art costs a lot, even though we made the choice to spend more to do it" as though we should be grateful of their filter level art of British actors or Evolving Wilds having vague art to 40k.

They always make excuses and you should never take them at face value.

    At least it's legible,

    Are they, though?

This is a mess. I'd love to know the sales figures for SLs like these now. I guess even with low sales they are profitable for Wizards, but geez.

Compared to the metal/rock poster SLs? Yes, this is very much legible.

Many of these seem like they were plucked from a Secret Lair they were going to make until they realized people will buy more of the thing they like if it's crossed over with another thing.

I'm so tired of these. Unless you're into that IP these are nothing but shapes and colors.

Much like all SLs only one card is holding up the majority of the value while one other (Hydroid Krasus) is decent. As much as I like Gargos it's not worth this.

At least it's legible, which shouldn't be something that should be a positive.
