    Hi guys,

My name is CML. I used to write for TCGPlayer, but grew tired of articles that neither "made a positive difference for the community" nor did the same for my bank account. Instead I have focused most of my creative energies on my Cube. Here it is:

my dull experiences with conventional cubes aside, i've got to question wtwlf's definition of 'fun' if it results in 30,000 posts on MTGS

"I feel quite safe in saying that this is the strongest deck I've ever played in Modern. Using this deck, it actually feels as if you're playing a different format, like a slower Vintage. And your opponents didn't get the memo and brought their standard decks to the match. Make no mistake, the limits on this deck are no longer the card quality or playability: now, it's about whether or not people decide to try it."

this thread is the funniest on MTGS

HAHAH this review. Casual players should not claim to know what "good cards" are, that's why you're casual, right?

    Infraction for trolling.

Deathrite really made this deck horrible as you could no longer dribble the last few pts of damage through, I imagine Scooze makes it straight-up unplayable.

W/b is still good though, Spear of Heliod is also a perfect fit in that deck

I like the idea of Bobs in this deck but I wonder if this is the right build for them.

    Quote from Mr.E
Looking to pick up a new deck and wanted to discuss some things.

Black splash... what of a red splash? Boros Charm isn't quite as good as Orzhov Charm but I'd think Lightning Helix makes even Lingering Souls look like junk, considering the point of this deck, and the combination give a more aggressive edge for beating on Tron and combo decks. Ajani V also seems like a better curve-topper than other planeswalkers and Slayers' Stronghold > Vault. This is actually where I plan to start my list, just to get an idea of how well it works. Perhaps I will report back later.

Edit: All I had time for now but I did get a 2/3 in against a UWR deck. Red-relevant cards include a singleton Figure of Destiny, two Boros Charm, four Helix, two Slayers' Stronghold, three Ajani V.

? martyr is a control deck. the aggro thread is "sisters." boros charm is not a control card. helix while interesting is less versatile than orzhov charm. slayers' stronghold is much worse than vault esp. here.

ajani vengeant is really good, though. however if we're gonna splash a third color (since B>R clearly) then we have to take the deck in a different direction, since we'll rarely be able to nut-draw with quick powered ascendant.

Highlights -- Opponent tapped out for Ajani V once and I burned it out with a Boros Charm. My Ajani V got double Bolted. I sided Helix out for Game 2 (opting to keep Path in for eating Colonnades) but I totally had three in my hand when I revealed them G1 with an early Martyr. :p Stronghold was instrumental to Game 2, giving Weathered Wayfarer haste and finishing the game much faster with hasty 3-power whenever he killed my previous dude(s) on board. Also I understand why to use two Mistveil Plains now, so they can recur each other when mean ol' LD kills the first, and Cavern of Souls is a total bamf.

Why is nobody running Cavern of Souls? Pretty much everything not named Squadron Hawk is a Human, it's virtually all upside. Similarly, Windbrisk Heights seems pretty marginal. Casting Instants off it is pretty pointless, you don't want to force overextension, and there's nothing ultra-expensive in the deck to cheat into play. Enters-tapped isn't a huge deal but it just seems like why bother.

i agree with your assessment of cavern and think cavern is really good in sisters, maybe 3x

mpod is a terrible matchup, but you should rarely lose to UWR of any variety. you're the control deck against them. the geist version will basically play like an aggro deck and try to tempo you out; don't let them. the control variant (snaps and sphinx's) will often go long. part of the difficulty is knowing when you want to slam stuff through to overload their counterspells and/or force them to tap out, and when to do nothing and just try to proc 'em out.

the card to watch out for is ajani vengeant. that's basically all you have to be worried about.

with your build 4 colorless lands seems like too many. if you're expecting tron 2 gq is ok i guess but cut 1x vault

i dunno, wasteland is interactive and it keeps in check legacy manabases. sounds like an answer to me. lol at your distinctions though oh god it's like a pretentious high schooler reading walter benjamin for the first time and not realizing what a doofus he sounds like

what's _really_ "beyond dumb" is spraying spit all over an mtgs forum like an angry downie who didn't get a ps4 for christmas

i dunno, i strongly feel that the black splash is just the best version of the 'control' lifegain builds.

emeria is awful if somewhat popular
solemn is not a white card
condemn serves no purpose (though oust is certainly worth a try)

    hi guys (esp. sam!)

i don't think sculler is good here. the black splash makes the deck control-oriented. sculler is an aggro card. tbh in such a shell i'd rather play castigate out of the board.

black makes the mana a little weaker and reduces the incidence of nut-draws, but not too much (though i found pushing it any further than 6 fetches is a poor idea).

bob is actually a great card in this shell, but there's no room for it really and it's not a white card. i have played phyrexian arena out of the board, but it has the same problems. bob just dies to removal (a non-trivial complaint because what else does in this deck) and makes us even worse against zealous and pontiff and pyroclasm and bleh what are you gonna take out for him. i do find it funny that an above poster is gettin all high-falutin' about it though

    blood baron sucks donkey dick

    that's all for now!

    real quick:

the people that are adding non-white cards (iok and thoughtseize) are doing it wrong. phyrexian arena is the most interesting of these but it just screws up the margins too hard.

suppression field is interesting. i have been giving elspeth KE a whirl for the long game slot, obviously a fantastic card but not all that high-impact for a sideboard slot. to combat melira pod, which is a fantastic and popular deck and an awful matchup, i have been trying Angel of Jubilation

this is a control deck. sculler is an aggro card.
