What about void shatter coming out of the board. Its a hard counter that exiles. Seems like it would be pretty good (especially in the mirror). If I'm not mistaken, you are still casting the creature that comes off of marvel, so you could counter the opponents Ulamog?

I agree with Red here. I think we are going to see a big push for aggro after the bans take affect. I like the 3x Ishkana in the MD and is Whirler Virtuoso where we need to be? Is the blue splash that critical? I also think 3x Chandra in the main is fine. I Rhazzer's inclusion of Nissa's Renewal to help cast the ulamog if we have to hard cast it. What counter spells would we run in the board if we stay with the blue splash? Do we still need Kozielk's return in the board as well? What about 2 world breaker in the spot for Aetherwind Basker?

I am so glad this is an active thread! I just finished making the marvel deck, and I mean just finished last week. The bans have literally destroyed this deck (although I think they needed to ban emrakul). As far as ramp spells go, we don't even have one that we can use that costs 2 mana or less? Everything I see here cost between 5-7 mana to cast. I also think that keeping Chandra as a 3 of in the main will help with the hard cast of ulamog. Is anyone playing 4 of them? Also have we completely abandoned the white splash? What about the blue splash?

I have tried that as well and I really like. Having a pusedo 5th thoughtseize seems really good. I was happy with it. And fot the record, game one he cast a rec for 7! I dont know how he didnt find an answer but it miust have been a really bad rev.

I know civil, that's what I was talking about. His opponent had a full grip on turn 5, so the mulligan really wasn't an issue. And now mono black is in the finals of the GP. This deck is awesome!!!

And now we have another GP MBD champion.

Well he just beat Sheehan shehar in another control matchup. Who is arguably one of the best players in the world. Is that good enough? From what I understand though, no red cards in the main, just rakdos return in the board. I still have not seen the decklist. And as far as that mulligan goes, he had 7 cards in his hand by turn 5. Not exactly what I call a blow out.

Well boys MBD took down another starcity. And yes he beat control in the final. The black player was very patient and won on the back of underworld connections both games. Also E-Fro is still splashing red BUT main decking pack rat. He currently sits at 9-1. I just saw him lose to mono blue. I don't have his entire deck list but I am very interested to see it!

I would recommend that you do main deck them. Although esper is a tough matchup they have to answer the rat or die. That's the bottom line. I debated running 25 lands but stuck with 26. I highly recommend that we run 26. I know all the Japanese decks that top 8ed run 25, but I was fishing the deck before FNM and I slid the 26th land in at the last second and didn't regret it for a second. I also main decked 2 godless shrines and 4 temple of silence to splash to revoke existence in the board. I didn't bring them in all night but it was a nice security blanket to know I had an answer to the gods and detention sphere.

Gentlemen, I went to FNM tonight and didn't lose a match. I have been playing this deck a long time and I know I have been trying to adapt to the ever changing meta. I have tried splashing white, and red and I still always come back to the thing I know best straight black. Now I can understand it everyone in the forum thinks my opinion may be no good because I have flip flopped back and fourth about the pact rat. I can tell you tonight all of my matches went to game 3 and I won 5 out of 6 off the back of pack rat. Axman and Bloood Artist make great point about not going all in with pack rat. My last match of the night was against control and I had a rat and a token. I attacked for 4 and then activated 2 vaults for 8 damage! Yes he D-sphered them the next turn but it was already too late. I drew a card off connections and killed him with vaults and Gary's. I do like splashing but the overall consistency of mono black is unmatched. I'm back to 1 color and pact rat and loving the results.

I agree packrat still way to go, I also agree that splashes arnt needed the shell works fine this has been proven with many top 8s.

The version that splashes red also took down the starcity invitational as well.

E-Fro's list is running 3 Phrarika's cure out of the board. I have been playing that list on cockatrice and doing well with it. I lost the match to a burn deck last night, but the only reason I won the second game was because of cure. Its better that the artifact and it kills a guy too. Just my thoughts.

I still think EFro's list is better than the straight Mono-B lists that made top 8. Pack Rat is good in a slow meta, and with burn on the rise, Standard is moving away from that. The red splash is great against control, which will still be an important MU, though not as important as it was a couple weeks ago. I wish there was another way to beat burn, though...

What are people's thoughts on Staff of the Death Magus? It seems really good right now because of Burn. I'm not sure if I want to make room for it in the sideboard though.

Seems really good against burn. Also 3 MBD decks made top 8 at GP Beijing. All playing straight black and all main decking pack rat. It also won the tournament. Interesting. Has the red splash lost its luster already?

I agree with you on marauder. Seems too narrow. I am really liking E-Fro's list the more I play it. There was an article on starcity about cutting the whip for a maindeck duress and I really like that idea. I read E-Fro's article today and he said that's the only cards he would cut. How has Mogis been?
