That's how it way. There were a lot less people playing. Most the game and comic store in my area had full stocks of dual lands at those prices and revised boosters were flying off the shelves for shivans and serras.
Hold it and buy the singles you need. Sell it and buy the single you need. All of the cards are on tcgplayer right now and it seems that the ones you want will be less than the value of it sealed.
I'm not really sure what would make me quit at this point. I have the cards to play most vintage decks without proxies. I have the cards for a lot of major legacy decks. I have some EDH decks and I could build modern if needed. Eternal formats are most appealing to me since I don't have to buy in over and over again. I did buy into vintage online though.
I feel like the game might just slowly fade out of my life. I used to play legacy every Saturday but things with work and relationships change and I just don't have the time to be there every Saturday in the afternoon. I've played at Eternal Weekend and GPNJ, but besides that, I'm made it to few sanctioned events. I play here and there with two plays groups but it's hard to always be available after work and no be tired.
I imagine I will just grow more casual over time truthfully. Eventually, I could see myself selling my cards if it went down that road.
I occasionally play vintage with a guy who has 4 of every card from beta onward. Only the origianl printing of the cards though. He does not do alpha has he likes matching borders.
All his cards are immaculate as well. He's been collecting for years.
I try not too have too much excess beyond the deck I play these days. I do have a bunch of cards still for flexible sideboards and different variations, like going from RUG to BUG. I keep the cards in a holiday MTG gift box with the 3 rows and dividers. All of the card are doubled sleeved. I sort them by color and by name. I have a section for mutlicolored, lands, and colorless/artifacts.
There were a lot of people at Eternal Weekend running Sphinx of the Steel Wind over blightsteel as it could not be dacked and does not have to tap to swing in. Also, the life gain isn't so bad either.
I would look at the formats I have option to play regularly and then build from there. Also, $150 won't get you that far for some competitive decks. I think you would need to look at that as well.
