I tried out Disrupting Shoal, and god it felt terrible. I'm gonna be trying out the following list tonight:

I'm still tweaking the board a bit, but I'm pretty happy where it is. More answers to Etched Champion while also keeping up the sweeper count, I wanna try Hibernation against Bloom to see how it is but its in there for the Company decks, and also Boggles if it starts to show up a bit.

Death's Shadow has actually proven insane in testing, I was surprised. I won games I had no right winning because of this card but not just against Burn. Also good against Affinity and the Mirror and even Zoo. Very good card.

I cut my Izzet Staticaster for another Engineered Explosives as it does the same thing except a bit worse in the mirror, but better vs. Affinity (marginally) and Abzan (much better).

I also cut a Young Pyromancer for the 19th land, and because of that I cut the 12th Cantrip (Gitaxian Probe) for another removal spell. Dismember might not be as good as terminate but I want a Spell Snare proof removal spell vs. Twin.

You literally just said to me run 3 Wear // Tear and just take cards out that dont serve the same purpose. This is why I asked you this. I dont care what you run but dont tell me to cut Grudge and Pierce for a card that doesnt accomplish the same thing...?

Do as you wish, I'm not coming where you live at night to introduce Wear//Tears in your sideboard while you sleep. Grin

    Yes. They will be.

So, you found the definitive answer against Stony Silence. Ok. It is amazing how no other pro-player ever thought of that. But ok. Grin

Yupp, on the draw they went turn 2 Stony Silence I went turn 3 Tempered Steel with my plains, glimmervoid and Darksteel citadel. Rolled over him because he thought the same thing every player thinks playing against affinity. I have a hate card, I win this game.

You hardly did that since your Darksteel Citadel couldn't have been tapped with Stony Silence in play.

Sarcasm aside: if your opponent only plays a Stony Silence and then just stares at you for the rest of the match, you might very well win. Otherwise, if you don't destroy it/counter it, it's gonna be a mountain to climb for you. Half of your mana sources don't work, including most of your colored mana sources. Ravager doesn't work. Cranial Plating doesn't work. Welding Jar doesn't work. Steel Overseer doesn't work. Concerning Tempered Steel, since numbers matter, most of the times you won't have 2x white mana to even cast it after a Stony Silence.

So guess what? No, you haven't found the definitive answer to Stony. No, playing 3x Tempered Steel doesn't prevent Stony silence from hurting you and stifling you. Yes, you still need to answer that card and yes, you should still be afraid of it.

    Whatever dude. Get lost

Like, when you build sideboards. Do you just pick matchups and just throw cards in?

I just throw cards in. Because I don't play the same cards you play, that must be the reason. I just throw cards in.

Besides have you looked at my mainboard? Im not scared of Stony Silence, I have Tempered Steel!

    Grin

I guess all Affinity players will be happy to know you found the definitive answer to maybe the best hate card available against Affinity. Yes. They will be.

I'm just curious about one thing: when was it the last time someone played a Stony Silence against you? Yupp, on the draw they went turn 2 Stony Silence I went turn 3 Tempered Steel with my plains, glimmervoid and Darksteel citadel. Rolled over him because he thought the same thing every player thinks playing against affinity. I have a hate card, I win this game.

That being said, run the cards you prefere in the sideboard, I couldn't care less. I was just sharing my opinion on a couple of things. Me I will never run 3x Grudge, especially now since Affinity's presence is going to decline tremendously (it already started).

Spell Pierce isnt FOR Stony Silence, why would you cut Pierce for it?

I want good cards in the Mirror. Ancient Grudge > Wear // Tear against Affinity. This is just a fact.
I want cards that are good vs. Shatterstorm/Wraths. Spell Pierce > Wear // Tear, since Wear // Tear doesnt counter removal.

I DONT WANT WEAR // TEAR FOR THE MIRROR. I run Wear // Tear because its good against the mirror and other decks. I want Ancient grudge because its good vs AFfinity, and I didnt need sideboard slots for other matchups.

Like, when you build sideboards. Do you just pick matchups and just throw cards in? Because when I build them, I make sure I like my 60 first and once its "closed" I start looking at what I dont want in matchups and write down how many slots I can have for each deck. I dont want more cards vs Control that arent good vs Jund/Other grindy decks, hence why I run a Wear // Tear Spell Pierce mix.

The thing is Wear // Tear isnt a good card in the mirror. And up until this week I wasnt too worried about Stony silence.

With Tron winning 2 major events that will change this week.

    Chandra, go

My turn 4 mana, Tap, Strike, Tap, Shock, Tap, +? For a burn deck and 3 cards, you just did 10 damage

    Thats a LOT.

Regardless, I think the fact it matches the side profile of the game is a large indicator that at the very least, the art is on the card. And since we cant find the source of the art, tahts a good indication WotC is hiding it, meaning this got extracted somehow.

If this isnt the printed version, I wouldnt be surprised if this is an older version and when she's spoiled, this arcana text is one of the things that pops up in their "older version notes" in that funky font they normally do.

At the end I can't go to the tournament.

@DXI-Edge: don't you think 3 Grudges are too many?

I have to take out 6 cards in the matchup, as Etched champion might as well read grey ogre. So I have to compensate the fact that since I'm preboarded vs a lot of decks, I have to help fix the other matchups.

Thats fair, but in that vein I also cant understand playing Huntmaster in a deck with 17 lands. Especially 4 while cutting Gitaxian Probes O.o

Dont get me wrong, I see the strength of RUG. But Pack Rat isnt the answer for Grixis, and since this is the Grixis forum I'm trying to help develop the deck. If it doesnt work as well as I'd like, which it hasnt so far, I will move on to other decks even though I love my little Insect Frown

It seems like you don't know what we're talking about. Check Spooly's post above.

I read his post. My 2nd post wasnt meant for animosity about discussing RUG. It was more to clarify my 2nd post.

Pack Rat doesnt do anything for this deck, and if I wanted to play RUG you would be one of the first people I would talk to. However, I want to try and find answers for Grixis as I dont own Tarmogoyfs. I could get them quite easily, I choose not to meaning I'm restricted from green.

Ashton and I debated this upthread, but here's the main differences between RUG and Grixis (supposing you were building either with Shoal):

    1) RUG is better able to deploy 2 fatties relatively quickly. RUG's creatures are typically a little smaller, though sometimes Goyf is a 5/6 (Bauble and/or Curiosity will get you there). Mandrills has Trample, which is hugely relevant vs. Lingering Souls, various CoCo lists, and when you're casting Simic Charm. RUG's creatures also play slightly nicer with Snapcaster Mage.

    2) Grixis has very good hard removal while RUG plays the swiss-army-knife like Simic Charm which, incidentally, can also be pitched to Shoal.

    3) RUG has Huntmaster, Ancient Grudge, and/or Destructive Revelry out of the board where Grixis gets Kolaghan's Command and Death's Shadow.

Ashton will tell you that Simic Charm's flexibility and ability to be pitched to Shoal, Mandrill's trample, the ability to deploy 2 fatties quickly more consistently, and Huntmaster for grindy matchups makes RUG definitely better. I'm not completely convinced - I'd like to see some people actually try to build Grixis Shoal lists first and see if we can find any unique cards that RUG doesn't have access to. But gun to my head, if I had to pick which one I thought would be better right now, I'd give the edge to RUG. If we have to go all in on protecting the queen, then Simic Charm does it all and can be pitched to Shoal.

Yep. As far as I'm concerned, Grixis Delver is Budget RUG. Blows me away how underrated Tarmogoyf is still, he's the best creature in the format bar none. I won't try to stop you Grixis players from splashing black over green, but at least run Pack Rat in the sideboard.

    Wha...wh...what?

    LOL Pack Rat? WHAT?

We dont have Treasure Cruise anymore. The whole point of Delver is to have cards in your hand for counterspells. We arent a Rock deck, and realistically right now we're a bad Grindy deck.

I just. Cant even right now.....

I dont understand what Shoal adds to RUG that it doesnt to grixis...

What do you get in RUG you dont get in Grixis? Tarmogoyf? With all the delve creatures Tarmogoys arent typically bigger than 4/5's anyway. I guess the only benefit is against Leyline's its still a 2/3 if you dont touch your yard for the rest of the game?

I dont know I'd rather have hard removal than Simic Charm and Tarmogoyf, and we still get everything else RUG does.
