  • posted a message on What is your LGS's attitude towards modern? Is it de-emphasised compared to other formats?
My LGS doesn't even do Standard FNMs anymore.

On Fridays, my store offers two three-round draft/Modern events on Fridays (one mid-afternoon, one evening) and has Modern events two other days of the week. Attendance is usually pretty good.

One question, how does this deck wins tron? Also merfolks doesnt seem to be a good pairing right?
Im starting to playing it and I like it A LOT!

I played a few games against RG Tron and actually haven't found it to be that bad. Their Pyroclasm effects and Ugins are mostly dead and your creatures can come out fast enough to put pressure on them. Path to Exile also lines up very nicely against most of their creatures and Displacer + Thought-Knot really shines as a way to lock them out of casting their threats.

I played a round against Merfolk at my LGS. I beat it rather handily but I'm not convinced that it was a good representation of the matchup as he didn't draw a single Spreading Seas effect, which sounds pretty good against us. 3x Engineered Explosives postboard really helps the matchup, though, and I think we're favoured postboard.

Easy to learn, difficult to master.

The burn gameplan is pretty straightforward. It isn't as hard as Affinity or Infect on the basic level, but having consistent success with it against resistance and postboard hate requires practice. Still, it's a good entry-level deck.

I took the list that Todd Stevens recommended in his article last week to my LGS's Friday/Saturday Modern events and promptly went 6-0 over both days.

This deck is unbelievably real. It's the most consistent post-Eye of Ugin ban Eldrazi deck I've ever played and it casts the most turn-2 Thought-Knot Seers thanks to the mana dorks. It also has access to "super Ponder" Ancient Stirrings, the best one mana removal spell, four maindeck Cavern of Souls for blue decks, a creature suite that is largely resistant to Lightning Bolt and Abrupt Decay, and a great lategame in Eldrazi Displacer + Drowner of Hope. The deck just feels like it has it all and I'm looking forward to testing it in the next few weeks.

I was wondering how we felt about the deck's apparent vulnerability to Blood Moon. With the way the lists are currently built, a Blood Moon would lock us out of our best creatures (including Drowner, as we usually run zero basic Island) and we don't have enough fetches to reliably fetch the basics we do play before a Moon comes down or a cheap way to deal with Moon after it resolves (we do have World Breaker at 7 mana).

Losing Modern Pro Tours won't be so bad. We have more than enough Modern coverage with tons of Grand Prix events and SCG Opens throughout the year. Gaining a bit more stability in our non-rotating format is an incredibly worthwhile trade for us and this will be a net positive.

It's a shame that the last Modern Pro Tour is Pro Tour Eye of Ugin but I guess it's good as an example of why Modern PTs were a problem.

They just announced today at the PT that there will be no more Modern Pro Tours moving forward. This should be much much better for the Modern banlist.

Isn't it going to be too hard to cast the 5-drops with only 4 Sol lands instead of 6? I'm a little worried that the curves people are posting are too high.

I was just about to ask this. We have 2/3rds as many Sol lands as we used to have yet we're running several times as many 4+ drops as other midrange decks (specifically BGx)are running. The list I'm tweaking has 4 Thought-Knot Seer but only five 5 drops (2-3 split between Smasher and Herder) and I can't see running any more than that. I think we need to be like Pascal Maynard and import some creatures from Death and Taxes lists.

This is the deck I'm looking at post bannings. I agree with all of you - this deck always felt like a better Midrange deck than the BGx shell, it didn't rely on Eye of Ugin as much as the other Eldrazi lists, and having maindeck processors and graveyard hate is excellent against both of the newly unbanned cards. Losing Eye of Ugin definitely hurts, but I think the deck can and will survive with just Eldrazi Temple if we lower the curve a bit. Thought-Knot Seer is still an amazing card when it isn't cast on turn two and Blight Herder was always great against blue decks. I personally can't wait to process the first Ancestral Vision I see in the exile zone.

Westvale Abbey is very interesting. I'm adding it to my shopping list for this Friday when the new set comes out. I don't see playing more than two but it looks like it'll complement our mini-token strategy very nicely.

Hey all. So my meta is now infested with GR Tron which has been a pretty bad matchup in my experience. I'm trying to tune my stock list to be as good as possible against them.

I'm already playing 4 Ghost Quarters and quite a few cards to bring in from the board but the matchup is still tough. I've cut Oblivion Sower entirely for Reality Smasher because the latter is a much faster clock (though I have been able to assemble Tron off my opponent's lands using Sowers and I'll miss that "achievement unlocked" moment lol). I'm thinking of taking out a Strangler for a maindeck Surgical Extraction. Maybe I should be running Expedition Map for more virtual copies of Ghost Quarter. Maybe some Warping Wail to counter Sylvan Scrying or Ancient Stirrings? Probably too narrow.

This dumbfounds me. Summer Bloom was going to go and I made peace with that (I even played Bloom Titan last night for the last time... several turn two Titans were had) but I never expected Wizards to actually ban Splinter Twin. It's such an icon of the format and it served such an important purpose as a policeman of Modern. It didn't need a banning at all and I don't even play the deck that often. Promoting "diversity" is such BS when Modern was already very diverse before tonight.

I really feel for the Twin players. I play (played?) Bloom Titan and I had months to accept the eventual fate of Summer Bloom and I came to grips with it. All Splinter Twin players must feel totally blindsided by this.

Having said that, I can't help but feel a little vindicated. The vast majority of players in the anti-Summer Bloom camp at my LGS and among posters in this thread were Splinter Twin players. Getting a card banned isn't so much fun or so easy when it's your deck that gets hit, huh? Hopefully it'll help tone down the banning rhetoric going forward.

So, Bloom wins last week and Goryo's Vengeance (probably) wins this week?

Get ready for people asking for bans on both. To be fair though, graveyard hate is much better than land hate in modern

Yeah, even if two of Grishoalbrand's wins have been on technicalities (his quarterfinals opponent being given a game loss for marked sleeves and his semis opponent naming Borborygmos with his Pithing Needle when he meant Borborygmos Enraged).

And just when I thought Goryo's Vengeance would escape the ban mania hive mind with Summer Bloom hogging all of the attention. Sigh.

That's hilarious. Normally, legendary creatures have some sort of subtitle or something. Borborygmos is, unfortunately for Bob's opponent, one of the few exceptions.

Anyway, I'm kinda bummed that Grishoalbrand is doing so well, and I love that deck Frown

And to think I thought this thread was unbearable before this open, Amulet winning is only going to make it more insufferable.

No kidding. Is this the first time Amulet has won a big name tournament? I hate that this happened so close to the next B&R announcement.

Sigh, the last thing I wanted was for Bloom Titan to go on a tear so close to the next B&R announcement Frown

Congrats to Bobby Fortanely for making the finals, though.

  • posted a message on Which decks do you have built, and why?
Tried to build as many and as varied decks as possible with minimal card overlaps (except for commons and Allied fetchlands, as I own playsets of both Onslaught and Khans). Right now I have Jund, UR Twin, Affinity, Burn, G/R Tron, and Amulet Bloom built.

I have tons of cards in the BGx and URx card pools, so I mix and match them into any combination of Twin, Jund, Junk, Grixis Control, Grixis Delver, Grixis Twin, Tarmo Twin, Blue Jund, Junk Company, Knightfall, etc. The latter four decks are pretty static because they each have a ton of archetype specific pieces.
